This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offered to the reader's attention is the author's translation of a book published in Poland in 2013. The book is addressed to the lovers of wildlife and honey bees, and to everyone interested in beekeeping products, their composition and medicinal properties. For Western European and American readers, Chapters 4 and 7, containing information about practically unknown in the West unconventional but very valuable beekeeping products, may be of particular interest. The author's scientific interests extend not only to the chemical composition and the origin of propolis, honey and other bee products, but also to the bee health. Unfortunately, in recent decades the bee health has noticeably deteriorated, resulting in many difficulties in beekeeping. The last Chapter of the book is devoted to the bee health and possible ways of their treatment, avoiding synthetic drugs with their unwanted side effects. The author's work in recent years is connected with these problems and it is no coincidence that the chapter devoted to the bee health has turned out to be the most revised and extended in comparison to the Polish edition. In preparing this publication, photographs were used, kindly provided to me by the Polish beekeeper Mrs. Teresa Porankiewicz-Bartkowiak, to whom I express my sincere gratitude.

Book excerpt: Did you know that Abraham Lincoln and Muhammad Ali both consumed bee pollen to boost energy, or that beekeepers in nineteenth-century Europe viewed their bees as part of the family? Or that after man, the honeybee, Apis mellifera, is the most studied creature on the planet? And that throughout history, honey has been highly valued by the ancient Egyptians (the first known beekeepers), the Greeks, and European monarchs, as well as Winnie the Pooh? In Sweetness and Light, Hattie Ellis leads us into the hive, revealing the fascinating story of bees and honey from the Stone Age to the present, from Nepalese honey hunters to urban hives on the rooftops of New York City. Uncovering the secrets of the honeybee one by one, Ellis shows how this small insect, with a collective significance so much greater than its individual size, can carry us through past and present to tell us more about ourselves than any other living creature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beekeeper and herbalist shares how you can use six products of the beehive: honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and bee venom. Not all new beekeepers realize that a honeybee hive produces a lot more than just honey. While your hard-working ladies will produce delicious honey, the hive as a whole also produces pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and bee venom; all very useful things for humans, if we know how to use them. The Benevolent Bee describes how and why the bees make these products, how they’ve been used by humans throughout the ages, and how beekeepers can harvest the products. It also presents simple do-it yourself recipes for using the products in health and wellness, body care, nutrition, and craft. You'll learn how to make salves for burns and a cough syrup from raw honey; how to make a tincture, an infused oil, and a mouthwash from propolis, the anti-bacterial “bee glue” that lines the inside of the hive; and much more. Get crafting now, it’s all already in your hive!

Book excerpt: "Honey has been waiting almost ten million years for a good biography," writes Holley Bishop. Bees have been making this food on Earth for hundreds of millennia, but we humans started recording our fascination with it only in the past few thousand years -- painting bees and hives on cave and temple walls and papyrus scrolls, revering them in poetry and art, even worshipping these amazing little insects as gods. From the temples of the Nile to the hives behind the author's own house, people have had a long, rapturous love affair with the beehive and the seductive, addictive honey it produces. Combining passionate research, rich detail, and fascinating anecdote, Holley Bishop's Robbing the Bees is an in-depth, sumptuous look at the oldest, most delectable food in the world. Part biography, part history, Robbing the Bees is also a celebration, a love letter to bees and their magical produce. Honey has played significant and varied roles in civilization: it is so sweet that bacteria can't survive in it, so it was our first food preservative and all-purpose wound salve. Honey wine, or mead, was the intoxicant of choice long before beer or wine existed. Hindus believe honey leads to a long life; Mohammed looked to honey as a remedy for all illness. Virgil; Aristotle; Pythagoras; Gregor Mendel; Sylvia Plath's father, Otto; and Sir Edmund Hillary are among the famous beekeepers and connoisseurs who have figured in honey's past and shaped its present. To help navigate the worlds and cultures of honey, Holley Bishop -- beekeeper, writer, and honey aficionado -- apprentices herself to a modern guide and expert, professional beekeeper Donald Smiley, who harvests tupelo honey from hundreds of hives in the remote town of Wewahitchka, Florida. Bishop chronicles Smiley's day-to-day business as he robs his bees in the steamy Florida panhandle and provides an engaging exploration of the lively science, culture, and lore that surround each step of the beekeeping process and each stage of bees' lives. Interspersed throughout the narrative are the author's lyrical reflections on her own beekeeping experiences, the business and gastronomical world of honey, the myriad varieties of honey (as distinct as the provenance of wine), as well as illustrations, historical quotes, and recipes -- ancient, contemporary, and some of the author's own creations.

Book excerpt: The nature .and diversity of presentations at the conference on: "Bee Products: Prop erties, Applications and Apitherapy" held at Tel-Aviv on May 26--30, 1996, emphasize the increasing interest of physicians, practitioners, scientists, herbalists, dieticians, cosmeti cians, microbiologists, and beekeepers in different facets of bee products. This volume consists of a selection of 31 contributions presented at the conference and which provide information on the present status of our knowledge in this area. In spite of their diversity, they reflect the mainstream of the conference, namely: "Imported" Prod ucts (honey, pollen and propolis), Exocrine Secretions of Workers (venom, royal jelly). Toxicity and Contaminants, Quality Control, Marketing, Apitherapy, Cosmetics, etc. Since antiquity, honey as well as other bee products were used as food, as a cure for ailments of humans and animals, and as cosmetics. We hope that this volume will contribute to interdisciplinary studies on chemical composition, pharmacological effects, nutrition, and other aspects of bee products. Critical and unbiased experimental research may unravel the yet unknown composition and mode of action of bee products and elucidate many unanswered questions. The noteworthy features of this conference were the participants from all parts of the world and of different cultural backgrounds, who shared their keen interest and curios ity regarding honey bees and their products. We thank all of them for their personal con tribution to the success of this conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The most important task of the bees, apart from the preparation of honey, wax and propolis, is the healing of the atmosphere! The honey bee, apis mellifera, alone, is able to perform this task. This is its first and foremost purpose.’ – Ralf Roessner Describing the Genius of Bees as the ‘group consciousness’ of the hive, Ralf Roessner presents an extraordinary commentary based on first-hand spiritual-scientific research and experience. He studies the mission of the Genius of Bees, the hexagonal structure of ‘the crystalline heaven’ within which the bees operate, and the healing of the world through their work. Roessner elucidates the relationships between the Genius of Bees, the elemental world and the human being. He also speaks of his personal experiences with the organic ‘earth hive’, giving instructions on how they are made, and offers practical advice on tackling the varroa mite. In this unique and original work, the author, ‘… attempts to describe the secrets of creation as far as he has experienced these himself’. As he goes on to clarify: ‘Many matters, which could only be vaguely perceived in former times, can now be investigated in a spiritual-scientific manner. A secret is only a secret to the extent it escapes the individual human being’s powers of consciousness’. Anyone seeking deeper insights into the world of the honey bee will be enriched by the content of this book.
