Book Synopsis Homeomorphisms of $3$-Manifolds with Compressible Boundary by : Darryl McCullough
Download or read book Homeomorphisms of $3$-Manifolds with Compressible Boundary written by Darryl McCullough and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study the mapping class groups of orientable [italic]P2-irreducible 3-manifolds with compressible boundary, and extend the results proved by K. Johannson for the boundary incompressible case. The authors show that the mapping class group is finitely-generated and has a geometrically defined subgroup of finite index. The main tool used in the proof of the results is to reduce the theorems to analogous statements about incompressible neighborhoods of compressible boundary components, and, using the fact that they have a very simple structure (being products-with-handles), to apply geometric techniques. Appropriate extensions of the results of the nonorientable [italic]P2-irreducible 3-manifolds are also given.

Download or read book Geometric Topology written by James C. Cantrell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Topology contains the proceedings of the 1977 Georgia Topology Conference, held at the University of Georgia on August 1977. The book is comprised of contributions from leading experts in the field of geometric topology. These contributions are grouped into four sections: low dimensional manifolds, topology of manifolds, shape theory and infinite dimensional topology, and miscellaneous problems. Subjects discussed under these sections include local spanning missing loops, the structure of generalized manifolds having nonmanifold set of trivial dimension, universal open principal fibrations, and how to build a flexible polyhedral surface. Topologists, geometers, and mathematicians will find the book very interesting and insightful.
Book Synopsis Geometry and Topology Down Under by : Craig D. Hodgson
Download or read book Geometry and Topology Down Under written by Craig D. Hodgson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the conference Geometry & Topology Down Under, held July 11-22, 2011, at the University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia, in honour of Hyam Rubinstein. The main topic of the book is low-dimensional geometry and topology. It includes both survey articles based on courses presented at the conferences and research articles devoted to important questions in low-dimensional geometry. Together, these contributions show how methods from different fields of mathematics contribute to the study of 3-manifolds and Gromov hyperbolic groups. It also contains a list of favorite problems by Hyam Rubinstein.
Book Synopsis Algorithmic Topology and Classification of 3-Manifolds by : Sergei Matveev
Download or read book Algorithmic Topology and Classification of 3-Manifolds written by Sergei Matveev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a thorough review of topics in 3-dimensional topology, derived from a decade of courses taught by the author. The author keeps the exposition to an elementary level by presenting the material mainly from the point of view of special polyhedra and special spines of 3-manifolds. The book culminates with the recognition procedure for Haken manifolds, and includes up-to-date results in computer enumeration of 3-mainfolds. The second edition adds new results, new proofs, and commentaries. Algorithmic Topology and Classification of 3-Manifolds serves as a standard reference for algorithmic 3-dimensional topology for both graduate students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Topology and Combinatorics of 3-Manifolds by : Klaus Johannson
Download or read book Topology and Combinatorics of 3-Manifolds written by Klaus Johannson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of combinatorial structures of 3-mani- folds, especially Haken 3-manifolds. Specifically, it is concerned with Heegard graphs in Haken 3-manifolds, i.e., with graphs whose complements have a free fundamental group. These graphs always exist. They fix not only a combinatorial stucture but also a presentation for the fundamental group of the underlying 3-manifold. The starting point of the book is the result that the intersection of Heegard graphs with incompressible surfaces, or hierarchies of such surfaces, is very rigid. A number of finiteness results lead up to a ri- gidity theorem for Heegard graphs. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in low-dimensional topolo- gy as well as combinatorial theory. It is self-contained and requires only a basic knowledge of the theory of 3-manifolds

Book Synopsis Collected Works of William P. Thurston with Commentary by : Benson Farb
Download or read book Collected Works of William P. Thurston with Commentary written by Benson Farb and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-06-02 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Thurston's work has had a profound influence on mathematics. He connected whole mathematical subjects in entirely new ways and changed the way mathematicians think about geometry, topology, foliations, group theory, dynamical systems, and the way these areas interact. His emphasis on understanding and imagination in mathematical learning and thinking are integral elements of his distinctive legacy. This four-part collection brings together in one place Thurston's major writings, many of which are appearing in publication for the first time. Volumes I–III contain commentaries by the Editors. Volume IV includes a preface by Steven P. Kerckhoff. Volume II contains William Thurston's papers on the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds, on complexity, constructions and computers, and on geometric group theory.

These areas have been influenced by Kulkarni's ideas and are closely related to his work and contribution.
