Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic and integrated account of signal and data processing with emphasis on the distinctive marks of the ocean environment is provided in this informative text. Underwater problems such as space-time processing relations vs. disjointed ones, processing of passive observations vs. active ones, time delay estimation vs. frequency estimation, channel effects vs. transparent ones, integrated study of signal, data, and channel processing vs. separate ones, are highlighted. The book provides the beginner with a concise presentation of the essential concepts, defines the basic computational steps, and gives the mature reader an advanced view of underwater systems and the relationships among their building blocks. It presents the needed topics on applied estimation theory within the underwater systems context. Included are topics in linear and nonlinear filtering, spectral analysis, generalized correlation, cepstrum and complex demodulation, Cramer-Rao Bounds, maximum likelihood, weighted least-squares, Kalman filtering, expert systems, wave propagation and their use, as well as their performance in applications to canonical ocean problems. The applications center on the definition, analysis, and solution implementations to representative underwater signal analysis problems dealing with signals estimation, their location and motion. The potential limitations and pitfalls of the implementations are delineated in homogeneous, noisy, interfering, inhomogeneous, multipath, distortions, and/or dispersive channels.

Book excerpt: This short book is for students, professors and professionals interested in signal processing of seismic data using MATLABTM. The step-by-step demo of the full reflection seismic data processing workflow using a complete real seismic data set places itself as a very useful feature of the book. This is especially true when students are performing their projects, and when professors and researchers are testing their new developed algorithms in MATLABTM for processing seismic data. The book provides the basic seismic and signal processing theory required for each chapter and shows how to process the data from raw field records to a final image of the subsurface all using MATLABTM. The MATLABTM codes and seismic data can be downloaded here. Table of Contents: Seismic Data Processing: A Quick Overview / Examination of A Real Seismic Data Set / Quality Control of Real Seismic Data / Seismic Noise Attenuation / Seismic Deconvolution / Carrying the Processing Forward / Static Corrections / Seismic Migration / Concluding Remarks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential principles, practical examples, current applications, and leading-edge research. In this book, Thomas F. Quatieri presents the field's most intensive, up-to-date tutorial and reference on discrete-time speech signal processing. Building on his MIT graduate course, he introduces key principles, essential applications, and state-of-the-art research, and he identifies limitations that point the way to new research opportunities. Quatieri provides an excellent balance of theory and application, beginning with a complete framework for understanding discrete-time speech signal processing. Along the way, he presents important advances never before covered in a speech signal processing text book, including sinusoidal speech processing, advanced time-frequency analysis, and nonlinear aeroacoustic speech production modeling. Coverage includes: Speech production and speech perception: a dual view Crucial distinctions between stochastic and deterministic problems Pole-zero speech models Homomorphic signal processing Short-time Fourier transform analysis/synthesis Filter-bank and wavelet analysis/synthesis Nonlinear measurement and modeling techniques The book's in-depth applications coverage includes speech coding, enhancement, and modification; speaker recognition; noise reduction; signal restoration; dynamic range compression, and more. Principles of Discrete-Time Speech Processing also contains an exceptionally complete series of examples and Matlab exercises, all carefully integrated into the book's coverage of theory and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding and slzmg cracks and other crack-like discontinuities has been the center of attention for scientists and engineers developing and using nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technology. However, with advanced mate rials being "engineered" and used in critical structural components, a new for NDE has emerged. Whereas many traditional engineering materi challenge als fail due to the initiation and self-similar propagation of a crack, reinforced composite materials degrade and fail in a manner more analogously to the collapse of a structure. Consequently the NDE of such materials involves assessing the combined effect of the material's damaged condition rather than identifying and sizing single critical imperfection. In 1979 Alex Vary, seeking to address the challenge confronting the NDE of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials began work on a new method of materials characterization. Focusing on the problem of evaluating graphite fiber reinforcedl epoxy laminated plates; Vary used a piezoelectric transducer to excite a mechanical disturbance in a plate and, with a sensi tive piezoelectric transducer monitored the disturbance on the same surface of the plate. (Placing the transducers on the same surface was primarily for practical purpose but their displacement in the direction of anticipated service load was of fundamental significance!) To quantify this observation, he counted the number of excursions, of the resulting electrical signal, above a arbitrary voltage threshold; a procedure frequently used for acoustic emission signal analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is evident that European earthquake engineering research and design practice is assuming a role of increasing importance on the international scene. This is primarily due to two considerations; firstly the emergence of a core of European earthquake engineers who are co-operating on a long-term basis for the development of seismic design criteria specific to the European environment and secondly the identification of new problems in existing design practice in the USA and in Japan. It is in this context that European earthquake engineering activities and publications are eagerly observed and awaited by the international community. Includes a compact set of papers from leading research institutions, laboratories and companies in Europe, with a healthy number of contributions from elsewhere. It represents the European state-of-the-art and practice in earthquake testing, analysis & design of civil engineering works as well as strong-motion & hazard studies.
