Book excerpt: We prove the existence and the uniqueness of differentiable and strong solutions for a class of boundary value problems for first order linear hyperbolic systems arising from the dynamics of compressible non-viscous fluids. In particular necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions for the non-homogeneous problem are studied; strong solutions are obtained without this supplementary condition. In particular we don't assume the boundary space to be maximal non-positive and the boundary matrix to be of constant rank on the boundary. In this paper we prove directly the existence of differentiable solutions without resort to weak or strong solutions. An essential tool will be the introduction of a space Z of regular functions verifying not only the assigned boundary conditions but also some suitable complementary boundary conditions.

Book excerpt: This report seeks to prove the existence and the uniqueness of classical and strong solutions for a class of non-homogeneous boundary value problems for first order linear hyperbolic systems arising from the dynamics of compressible non-viscous fluids. The method provides the existence of classical solutions without resorting to strong or weak solutions. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of solutions for the non-homogeneous problem is proved. It consists of an explicit relationship between the boundary values of u and those of the data f. Strong solutions are obtained without this supplementary assumption.

Book excerpt: Fluid mechanics models consist of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations for which, despite a long history of important mathematical contributions, no complete mathematical understanding is available. The second volume of this book describes compressible fluid-mechanics models. The book contains entirely new material on a subject known to be rather difficult and important for applications (compressible flows). It is probably a unique effort on the mathematical problems associated with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, written by one of the world's leading experts on nonlinear partial differential equations. Professor P.L. Lions won the Fields Medal in 1994.

We describe, at first in a very formaI manner, our essential aim. n Let m be an op en subset of R , with boundary am. In m and on am we introduce, respectively, linear differential operators P and Qj' 0 ~ i ~ 'V. By "non-homogeneous boundary value problem" we mean a problem of the following type: let f and gj' 0 ~ i ~ 'v, be given in function space s F and G , F being a space" on m" and the G/ s spaces" on am" ; j we seek u in a function space u/t "on m" satisfying (1) Pu = f in m, (2) Qju = gj on am, 0 ~ i ~ 'v«])). Qj may be identically zero on part of am, so that the number of boundary conditions may depend on the part of am considered 2. We take as "working hypothesis" that, for fEF and gjEG , j the problem (1), (2) admits a unique solution u E U/t, which depends 3 continuously on the data . But for alllinear probIems, there is a large number of choiees for the space s u/t and {F; G} (naturally linke d together). j Generally speaking, our aim is to determine families of spaces 'ft and {F; G}, associated in a "natural" way with problem (1), (2) and con j venient for applications, and also all possible choiees for u/t and {F; G} j in these families.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with certain classes of nonlinear problems for elliptic systems of partial differential equations: boundary-value problems with free boundaries. The first part has to do with the general theory of boundary-value problems for analytic functions and its applications to hydrodynamics. The second presents the theory of quasiconformal mappings, along with the theory of boundary-value problems for elliptic systems of equations and applications of it to problems in the mechanics of continuous media with free boundaries: problems in subsonic gas dynamics, filtration theory, and problems in elastico-plasticity.

Book excerpt: This textbook is designed for a one year course covering the fundamentals of partial differential equations, geared towards advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics, science, engineering, and elsewhere. The exposition carefully balances solution techniques, mathematical rigor, and significant applications, all illustrated by numerous examples. Extensive exercise sets appear at the end of almost every subsection, and include straightforward computational problems to develop and reinforce new techniques and results, details on theoretical developments and proofs, challenging projects both computational and conceptual, and supplementary material that motivates the student to delve further into the subject. No previous experience with the subject of partial differential equations or Fourier theory is assumed, the main prerequisites being undergraduate calculus, both one- and multi-variable, ordinary differential equations, and basic linear algebra. While the classical topics of separation of variables, Fourier analysis, boundary value problems, Green's functions, and special functions continue to form the core of an introductory course, the inclusion of nonlinear equations, shock wave dynamics, symmetry and similarity, the Maximum Principle, financial models, dispersion and solutions, Huygens' Principle, quantum mechanical systems, and more make this text well attuned to recent developments and trends in this active field of contemporary research. Numerical approximation schemes are an important component of any introductory course, and the text covers the two most basic approaches: finite differences and finite elements.
