At the dawn of the nineteenth century, when Autocracy in the political world of Europe was tottering to its fall, Hahnemann, then in his prime, was making his first attacks on the power of Authority in medicine, and leading all who would to take their stand on the ground of Natural Fact. The battle is yet far from won; but Hahnemann has led the way into a new world of thought, and now all who wish to know the thing that is, are no longer obliged to accept that only which bears Authority's imprimatur. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homoeopathy, a Principle in Nature: Its Scientific Universality Unfolded; Its Development and Philosophy Explained; And Its Applicability to the Treatment of Diseases Shown The immediate circumstances which have given rise to the publication Of this volume, are Of sufficient interest to be communicated to the reader. Indeed, such a communication is rendered necessary, not so much in consideration Of the personal interests Of the author as on account of the honor and greatness Of the Cause to which he has devoted his best energies. T wo days previous to the last Commencement in the Homoeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, the author was removed from the Chair Of Materia Medica. And Therapeutics which he had filled with honor to himself, and with acknowledged advantage to the Class and to the Cause Of Homoeopathy. Not a single complaint had been preferred against him, so far as he knew. He was removed by a brief notice sent to him by the Board of Managers, that the Chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics had been declared vacant. Which the truth, by the very necessity of its nature, either must, or appears likely to, overturn; and, That truth has ultimately triumphed. In regard to the first axiom, that truth has been discovered AT distinct and often distant intervals, do not the facts, that the world has existed so many hundreds of years, and that, though so much truth has been discovered, so much remains un discovered, testify to the soundness of this axiom? This axiom does not imply that truth was ever imperfect. It came perfect from the Divine mind, and exists in the universe in all its glorious perfection. Even ancient mythology teaches this, when it in its poetic relation declares, that Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, came forth from the brain of the mythological chief god Jupiter, fully formed and perfectly armed; a relation vividly testifying to the belief among the philosophers of Olden times in the, as origi nally created, perfection of truth. In reference to the essential perfection of truth, and, at the same time, its gradual discovery by man at distinct and Often distant intervals, how appropriate are the beautiful imagery and the forcible language Of Milton, in his speech for the liberty Of unlicensed printing, addressed to the parliament Truth indeed came into the world with her Divine Master, and was a perfect shape, most glorious to look upon; but when he ascended, then straight arose a wicked race of deceivers, who took the virgin truth, hewed her lovely form into a thousand pieces, and scattered them to the four winds. From that time ever since, the sad friends Of truth, such as durst appear, went up and down, gathering up limb by limb still as they could find them. We have not found them all, lords and commons, nor ever shall do, till her Master's second coming: he shall bring together every joint and member, and shall, mould them into an immortal feature Of loveliness and perfection. Laudanum and Paregoric; 4. Coffee, Tea, Liquors, and Tobacco In the following pages an attempt has been made to point out the most striking features which distinguish Homoeopathy from the old practice, and at the same time briefly exposing the fallacy of the objections usually made use of against it. Homeopathy claims nothing but a fair field and no favors; it appeals to facts alone; and supported by these, we may rest assured that the period is not far distant when she will be acknowledged to stand at the head of the sciences, diffusing health and happiness around. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Practice of Homoeopathy Moon stress has been laid, by those adverse to the doctrine of Homoeopathy, upon the diet necessary to be observed by the patient. It has been asserted, that cures efl'ected by the system, are the result of the change of diet, &c.: it is hardly necessary to refute so absurd an idea. I can only say, that if any physician, of whatever school he may be, neglect to regulate the diet of a person labouring under disease, either acute or chronic, he will seldom be rewarded by seeing his p atient restored to health. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homoeopathy in Medicine and Surgery The most important symptoms of a case of sickness are the mental symptoms. Hahnemann called attention to this fact. The most important symptoms produced by a drug upon healthy people are the mental symptoms. This fact has been recognized by our drug provers. Other things being equal, the homoeopathist who most closely applies the artificial symptoms to the natural symptoms, when prescribing, achieves the most notable success. As my address dealt particularly with the career of Dr. Mure, I may be allowed to say a few words about Dr. Epps in this Preface. In meteoric brilliance, and in universality of reach, the career of Dr. John Epps cannot compare with that of Dr. Mure; but if John Epps did not founda new empire of Homoe opathy in a new world, he kindled an undying flame of interest in Hahnemann's great discovery among the common people of our land. Mure and Epps were both alike in spired with unswerving and selfless devotion to the cause of Homoeopathy and the cause of humanity, which with them were one and the same thing. The propagators and advocates of that opinion affirm that there is a much shorter, safer, and better method of curing diseases than that which is at present practised; and any medical man, they assure us, may readily convince himself of the truth of their assertion. If, they say, (and one scarcely knows how to reply to them) if those who reject our system would but be good enough to read and learn some little about it before they talk about it; if they would but hear before they pronounce, and try before they decide, we should have no oh jection to let the system rest altogether on their experiments.
