Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homiletic and Catechetic Studies, According to the Spirit of Holy Scripture and of the Ecclesiastical Year The exalted authority of the Catholic preacher does not indeed clothe him with oficial infallibility, but in consequence of the intimate union of the preacher with the teaching Church, in consequence of the superintendency and direction of the preaching ofice by this same infallible teaching Church, in consequence of a certain participation of the preaching ofiice in the magisterium ordinarium of the Church the hearing Church possesses a real guaranty that through the preachers, united with the bishop and the Pope, drawing through earnest efiorts from the source of Christ, it receives the truth, the real unadulterated truth of the infallible Church. But this living authority of teaching, with its rich organs of life, is at all times capable and prepared to correct at once all possible deviations from the truth. The Son of God, Who rises through His own power. Resurrexit, non est hic: videte locum ubi posuerunt eum. The Gospel announces this fact: Christ Himself announces it in the Introit. The Church puts the words of Psalm 138 in a proper and deeply significant sensus accommodal'/us, into the mouth of the risen Christ Who announces His own deed. Christ announces Himself solemnly as the victorious Son of God. He addresses, as it were, at His resurrection, the Father in Heaven and man on earth in the words: resurrexi et adhuc sum tecum, alleluja: I rose up (oh God!) and am still with Thee (in spite of the dreadful suflering and death, united to Thee, oh God!) The Father raises the Son by His all-powerful hand, that all may believe in Him; this is for Him the greatest testimony of the Father. The Son Himself arises, through His own power, because He is Godand just through the resurrection the splendid rays of the previously given proofs of the divinity are transformed into a full, resplendent sun: Oriens ex alto. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Catholic Church of the United States is a Catholic Family of Faith, based within the United States. As inheritors of Apostolic Succession from the Western Latin (Catholic) Church, the Ancient Oriental Churches and the Eastern Byzantine (Orthodox) Churches, we possess a rich theological heritage. We are a sacramental church, embracing the fullness of Christianity as expressed within Catholic understanding. We stand, holding fast to the teachings of the ancient faith, in a modern society that is often hostile, towards Christians in general and Catholics in particular, and choose to obey the timeless message of Christ rather than yield to the "Spirit of the Age". "I am very happy with the contents, and feel that yet again it is a wonderful work and look forward to having this in print to use here in the UK." - Most Rev. David Bowler, Provincial Ordinary of the United Kingdom. "As a comprehensive, detailed Old Catholic catechism, it is an indispensable aid to studying the faith." -Most Rev. Andre' Queen, Provincial Ordinary of the Western United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here it is -- the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholic throughout the world believe in common. This book is the catechism (the word means "instruction") that will serve as the standarad for all future catechisms. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. Here is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is, as Pope John Paul II calls it, "a special gift."

Book excerpt: What does it mean to be evangelical? What does it mean to be Catholic? Can one consider oneself both simultaneously? Francis Beckwith has wrestled with these questions personally and professionally. He was baptized a Catholic, but his faith journey led him to Protestant evangelicalism. He became a philosophy professor at Baylor University and president of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS). And then, in 2007, after much prayer, counsel, and consideration, Beckwith decided to return to the Catholic church and step down as ETS president. This provocative book details Beckwith's journey, focusing on his internal dialogue between the Protestant theology he embraced for most of his adult life and Catholicism. He seeks to explain what prompted his decision and offers theological reflection on whether one can be evangelical and Catholic, affirming his belief that one can be both. EXCERPT It's difficult to explain why one moves from one Christian tradition to another. It is like trying to give an account to your friends why you chose to pursue for marriage this woman rather than that one, though both may have a variety of qualities that you found attractive. It seems to me then that any account of my return to the Catholic church, however authentic and compelling it is to me, will appear inadequate to anyone who is absolutely convinced that I was wrong. Conversely, my story will confirm in the minds of many devout Catholics that the supernatural power of the grace I received at baptism and confirmation as a youngster were instrumental in drawing me back to the Mother Church. Given these considerations, I confess that there is an awkwardness in sharing my journey as a published book, knowing that many fellow Christians will scrutinize and examine my reasons in ways that appear to some uncharitable and to others too charitable.
