Book excerpt: “Mountain Homespun will be of special interest to those studying southern Appalachian handicrafts, the 1890s handicraft revival, and northern Protestant missionary work in turn-of-the-century Appalachia.” —North Carolina Historical Review “Mountain Homespun is much more than a memoir. It offers unrivaled specific information on the processes of mountain crafts—not only on weaving, spinning, and dyeing, the author’s primary interest, but also on basketry, quilting, and other pursuits. All in all, the book is an important publishing event.” —Berea College Newsletter “This is a wonderful book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They began their existence as everyday objects, but in the hands of award-winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, fourteen domestic items from preindustrial America–ranging from a linen tablecloth to an unfinished sock–relinquish their stories and offer profound insights into our history. In an age when even meals are rarely made from scratch, homespun easily acquires the glow of nostalgia. The objects Ulrich investigates unravel those simplified illusions, revealing important clues to the culture and people who made them. Ulrich uses an Indian basket to explore the uneasy coexistence of native and colonial Americans. A piece of silk embroidery reveals racial and class distinctions, and two old spinning wheels illuminate the connections between colonial cloth-making and war. Pulling these divergent threads together, Ulrich demonstrates how early Americans made, used, sold, and saved textiles in order to assert their identities, shape relationships, and create history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Homespun These exhibits are not all that IS left to tell the story of the old crafts, for throughout the eastern states of our country may be found specimens of the work done on the looms. In New England the practice of home weaving was in general abandoned long ago, though lingering, doubtless, in remote spots until after the I 8 5o's. There are many old coverlets in good preservation, some woven in the more common fashion with overshot designs, on four sets of harness, others on six sets 5 more rarely one is found woven on five sets, and a few beautiful specimens remain of the true double weave, which required eight or more sets of harness. There are homespun blankets, too, and linen sheets and table linen; bits of linen from dresses, one with a crossbar of copperas, yellow on pure white, and preserved as the lining of a quilt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning celebration and reappraisal of the importance of “women’s work,” Made from Scratch addresses the tug that many Americans feel between our professional and private lives. In this stunning celebration and reappraisal of the importance of "women's work," acclaimed journalist Jean Zimmerman poignantly addresses the tug that many Americans of the twenty-first century feel between our professional and private lives. With sharp wit and intelligence, she offers evidence that in the current domestic vacuum, we still long for a richer home life -- a paradox visible in the Martha Stewart phenomenon, in the continuing popularity of women's service magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, and Ladies' Home Journal -- whose combined circulation of over 17 million is nearly twice the combined circulation of Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report -- and the booming business of restorations, where onlookers get a hands-on view of domestic life as it flourished in past centuries. This book is about the ways home traditions passed from one generation to the next -- baking a birthday cake from scratch, cherishing family heirlooms, or discovering the satisfaction of piecing a quilt -- sustain our souls, especially in our ever more processed, synthetic world, where we buy "homemade" goods and fail to see the irony in that. Made from Scratch tells the story of the unsung heroines of the hearth, investigating the history of female domesticity and charting its cultural changes over centuries. Zimmerman traces the lives of her own family's homemakers -- from her tiny but indomitable grandmother, who managed a farm, strangled chickens with her bare hands, and sewed all the family clothing, to her mother, who rejected her country upbringing yet kept a fastidious suburban home where the gender divide stayed firmly in place, to her own experiences as a wife and mother weaned on the Women's Movement of the 1970s, with its emphatic view that housework was a dirty word and that the domestic sphere was to be fled rather than cherished. In this book Zimmerman questions the unexamined trade-off we have made in a shockingly brief time span, as we've "progressed" from home-raised chickens to frozen TV dinners to McNuggets from the food court at the mall. What is lost when we no longer engage, as individuals and as a community, in the ancient rituals of food, craft, and shelter?

If flat-pack furniture or expensive designer pieces aren’t your thing, and you’d rather make your own cushion cover than buy it, then Homespun Style is for you. The Homespun look is about supporting artists and craftspeople, hunting down one-of-a-kind gems made by people with talent and passion. Fans of Homespun Style are no stranger to a flea market, online auction, or second-hand store either, always on the lookout for unusual furniture and quirky accessories. Interiors stylist Selina Lake and writer Joanna Simmons show how this homely, crafty look has been given a modern twist with cheerful colors, tactile fabrics, and bold combinations. The book begins with the Ingredients of the look, from the basics of modern craft today to how to make color and pattern work. It focuses on ingenious ways to recycle and reuse, from transforming furniture with a lick of paint to finding new uses for everyday items. The Details section looks at textiles, furniture and display, and the second half of the book, Spaces, reveals how the style works beautifully in Living Spaces, Cooking & Eating Spaces, Bedrooms & Bathrooms, Children’s Rooms, Craft & Work Rooms, and Outside. Homespun Style reflects our growing passion for all things crafted, stitched, knitted, and painted. Selina Lake visits homes packed with personality and interest, full of homemade pieces, restored junk-store finds, and one-off treasures.
