Book Synopsis Homer in Flight by : Rabindranath Maharaj
Download or read book Homer in Flight written by Rabindranath Maharaj and published by Fredericton, N.B. : Goose Lane. This book was released on 1997 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilarious and poignant, Homer in Flight draws a brilliant picture of a chronic malcontent roving from high-rise to housing development along the 401 and the QEW. Homer remains utterly displaced, not because of what other people do or don't do, but because he lives in his imagination instead of embracing an imperfect but fairly benign reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after September 11, 2001, the nation continues to mourn what was lost on that sunny Tuesday morning: nearly 3,000 lives, and the innocence of a nation that will forever be changed. LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. was the first officer and co-pilot of United Flight 93; en route to San Francisco the morning of September 11, the flight was diverted to Washington, D.C., before crashing into a deserted field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Had it not been for the heroic efforts of crew members such as LeRoy, the plane would have crashed into its intended target--the U.S. Capitol--destroying more lives and the symbol of a nation united.

Download or read book Chasing Homer written by László Krasznahorkai and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic escape nightmare, Chasing Homer is sped on not only by Krasznahorkai’s signature velocity, but also by a unique musical score and intense illustrations In this thrilling chase narrative, a hunted being escapes certain death at breakneck speed—careening through Europe, heading blindly South. Faster and faster, escaping the assassins, our protagonist flies forward, blending into crowds, adjusting to terrains, hopping on and off ferries, always desperately trying to stay a step ahead of certain death: the past did not exist, only what was current existed—a prisoner of the instant, rushing into this instant, an instant that had no continuation … Krasznahorkai—celebrated for the exhilarating energy of his prose—outdoes himself in Chasing Homer. And this unique collaboration boasts beautiful full-color paintings by Max Neumann and—reaching out of the book proper—the wildly percussive music of Szilveszter Miklós scored for each chapter (to be accessed by the reader via QR codes).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Fosburgh writes of the air as many of our greatest writers have written of the sea with love and fear...”—BOSTON HERALD In the darkness, the ten men stood together near the nose of the Upstairs Maid. She was factory-new. They had named her, and they had paid thirty dollars to a sergeant for the fine naked blond painted on her nose. She was the best B-24 bomber in the business, she was their plane and they were proud of her. And each one of them had wondered, privately, whether someday she would fly them back to the States, or whether somewhere out there in the Pacific, she would be their tomb... “...the perilous mission which takes the Upstairs Maid into a storm, over the target, then home wounded, on two engines and a prayer, is the most authentic flying time ever logged by an American writer.”—THE NEW YORK TIMES

Book Synopsis The Queen of the Air: Being a Study of the Greek Myths of Cloud and Storm by : John Ruskin
Download or read book The Queen of the Air: Being a Study of the Greek Myths of Cloud and Storm written by John Ruskin and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queen of the Air is a study of Greek myths written by John Ruskin. Ruskin was an English writer, philosopher, art critic during the Victorian era. Excerpt: "A myth, in its simplest definition, is a story with a meaning attached to it other than it seems to have at first; and the fact that it has such a meaning is generally marked by some of its circumstances being extraordinary, or, in the common use of the word, unnatural. Thus if I tell you that Hercules killed a water-serpent in the lake of Lerna, and if I mean, and you understand, nothing more than that fact, the story, whether true or false, is not a myth. But if by telling you this, I mean that Hercules purified the stagnation of many streams from deadly miasmata, my story, however simple, is a true myth; only, as, if I leftit in that simplicity, you would probably look for nothing beyond, it will be wise in me to surprise your attention by adding some singular circumstance; for instance, that the water-snake had several heads, which revived as fast as they were killed, and which poisoned even the foot that trod upon them as they slept. And in proportion to the fulness of intended meaning I shall probably multiply and refine upon these improbabilities; as, suppose, if, instead of desiring only to tell you that Hercules purified a marsh, I wished you to understand that he contended with the venom and vapor of envy and evil ambition, whether in other men's souls or in his own, and choked that malaria only by supreme toil,—I might tell you that this serpent was formed by the goddess whose pride was in the trial of Hercules; and that its place of abode as by a palm-tree; and that for every head of it that was cut off, two rose up with renewed life; and that the hero found at last that he could not kill the creature at all by cutting its heads off or crushing them, but only by burning them down; and that the midmost of them could not be killed even that way, but had to be buried alive. Only in proportion as I mean more, I shall certainly appear more absurd in my statement; and at last when I get unendurably significant, all practical persons will agree that I was talking mere nonsense from the beginning, and never meant anything at all."
