Book excerpt: Caffeine is a Killer...After surviving two murders, and two months in business, bookstore and coffee shop owner Riley Morgan expects everything to go well. It's August in the town of Cedar Grove, South Dakota. Summer is coming to an end, but there is one last hurray with the local Cedar Grove Apple Festival and Fair. It proposes to be a good occasion for all. Riley's launching out his new Spiced Chai latte and Apple Cinnamon Scones. There is trouble on the horizon though. His old college roommate and rival in everything during those four years, Evan Johansen, has decided to open up a coffee shop in town. Riley's landlord and nemesis, Brent Larsen, seems in full swing of this. Riley hates Caffeine Crush, because it's just another trendy coffee shop. It makes matters worse when Evan is found dead in his shop, with a cup of Riley's new Spiced Chai Latte nearby and this happens right after Riley is seen arguing with Evan. It will take the help of his best friend Connor, the nosy baker lady next door, his police officer girlfriend, and his trusty pitbull Duke to figure this mystery out.

Thanks to the FBI Boston, Miami, Los Angeles and to the 3-star Michelin chef for help with these delicious recipes. Each of the killers in this book has touched my heart in some way. Although this author does not condone the actions of the hunters in this volume, these lost souls were the architects of my innocently creative imagination as I was growing up. In that way, I have sought out their knowledge, asking them to show me a world that I could not know, and in that way, perhaps to help me understand the nature of being so completely alone; so completely lost in the true chaos of the human mind... - CB

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mourning the death of loved ones and recovering from their loss are universal human experiences, yet the grieving process is as different between cultures as it is among individuals. As late as the 1960s, the Wari' Indians of the western Amazonian rainforest ate the roasted flesh of their dead as an expression of compassion for the deceased and for his or her close relatives. By removing and transforming the corpse, which embodied ties between the living and the dead and was a focus of grief for the family of the deceased, Wari' death rites helped the bereaved kin accept their loss and go on with their lives. Drawing on the recollections of Wari' elders who participated in consuming the dead, this book presents one of the richest, most authoritative ethnographic accounts of funerary cannibalism ever recorded. Beth Conklin explores Wari' conceptions of person, body, and spirit, as well as indigenous understandings of memory and emotion, to explain why the Wari' felt that corpses must be destroyed and why they preferred cannibalism over cremation. Her findings challenge many commonly held beliefs about cannibalism and show why, in Wari' terms, it was considered the most honorable and compassionate way of treating the dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the enormously popular Berkeley cheese shop and bakery, a collection of 150 classic recipes along with a history of the store and a cheese primer, all accompanied by 50 photographs. The Cheese Board was there, a hole in the wall with a line out the door, before Chez Panisse was so much as a gleam in my eye. When the restaurant was conceived, I wanted it to be in North Berkeley so the Cheese Board would be nearby, because I knew I would be among friends. -Alice Waters, from the Foreword When a tiny cheese shop opened in Berkeley, California, in 1967, there was little hint of what the store-and the neighborhood-would grow into over the next 30 years. The Cheese Board became a collective a few years later and Chez Panisse opened across the street, giving birth to one of the country's most vibrant food neighborhoods, the epicenter of California's culinary revolution. Equal parts bakery, cheese store, pizzeria, and gathering place, the Cheese Board is a patchwork of the local community, where a passion for good food runs deep. THE CHEESE BOARD presents over 100 recipes for the store's classic breads, pastries, and pizzas, along with a history of the collective and an extensive cheese primer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction by Ed Gorman: If there's one thing Dick Lupoff understands (with perverse glee) it's the sorry state of the human condition. In this collection you'll find a wide variety of humans whose conditions leave much to be desired. A pit bull owner who's just as nasty as his dog A thief who believes his father-in-law was a real Nazi A dead-end boxer who has come back in a boxing movie A detective named Caligula Foxx who might be Nero Wolfe in drag A crooked corporal whose payoff is death Not only are the storylines original, the writing is indelibly stamped with Dick's vision and voice. Dick's writing talents really can't be defined by the usual means. Yes, he writes science fiction. Yes, he writes fantasy. Yes, he writes mystery. But what he really writes are Lupoffs. Long, short, hilarious, whimsical, dark, mysterious-they're all Lupoffs. Richard A. Lupoff is the author of many books including the popular Lindsey-and-Plum mysteries. The next of these, The Emerald Cat Killer, will be published by St. Martin's Press in October, 2010. His most recent collection of mysteries is Quintet: The Cases of Chase and Delacroix, published by Crippen & Landru.
