Book excerpt: Edwin Waugh's 'Home-Life of the Lancashire Factory Folk during the Cotton Famine' is a poignant and insightful exploration of the effects of the cotton famine on the working-class families of Lancashire. Through vivid descriptions and a compassionate tone, Waugh sheds light on the struggles and sacrifices faced by these individuals during a time of economic hardship. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, the book offers a glimpse into the domestic lives of the factory workers, highlighting their resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Waugh's focus on the personal experiences of the Lancashire folk adds a human touch to the historical narrative, making this work a valuable primary source for understanding the social and economic dynamics of the period. Edwin Waugh, a renowned Lancashire poet and writer, drew from his own background and observations of the working-class communities to craft this empathetic portrayal of the cotton famine's impact. His deep empathy and understanding of the human condition shine through in his writing, creating a compelling and emotionally charged account of a lesser-known aspect of Victorian history. I highly recommend 'Home-Life of the Lancashire Factory Folk during the Cotton Famine' to readers interested in social history, labor studies, and Victorian literature, as it offers a unique perspective on a significant historical event and the enduring spirit of the working class.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period covered by this volume, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history. Much has been done recently to revise this view, though research still tends to focus on London as the commercial and cultural hub of the British Isles. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that by the mid-eighteenth century musical activity outside London was highly distinctive in terms of its reach, the way it was organized, and its size, richness, and quality. There was an extraordinary amount of musical activity of all sorts, in provincial theatres and halls, in the amateur orchestras and choirs that developed in most towns of any size, in taverns, and convivial clubs, in parish churches and dissenting chapels, and, of course, in the home. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period. The essays brought together here testify to the vital role played by music in provincial culture, not only in socializing and networking, but in regional economies and rivalries, demographics and class dynamics, religion and identity, education and recreation, and community and the formation of tradition. Most important, perhaps, as our focus shifts from London to the regions, new light is shed on neglected figures and forgotten repertoires, all of them worthy of reconsideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waugh recounts in tragic detail the poverty and exploitation suffered by those 'Lancashire Folk' affected by the little reported Cotton Famine of the 1860s. Civil war in America cut off the supply of cotton and with much of Lancashire (which then included Manchester) dependant on the cotton trade, the closure of cotton mills was inevitable. Edwin Waugh's narrative is accompanied by speeches, letters and 'songs of distress' written during the famine. The works are reprinted as they appeared in the columns of the Manchester Examiner and Times in 1862.Dyslexia-friendly font

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was officially opened on Easter Monday, 5th April 1847, Birkenhead park became the first municipally funded park in Britain. It was a pioneer in the development of urban public parks, designed for use by everyone, irrespective of social class, ethnicity or age. In terms of town planning, it demonstrated the importance of including green infrastructure in urban development as a vital contribution to public health and wellbeing. Paxton’s design for the park was heralded as ‘a masterpiece of human creative genius’ : it served as a vehicle for the global transmission of the English landscape school and led to the creation of numerous public parks everywhere, most famously Central Park, New York, incorporating of many of Paxton’s design features. This book addresses a long-standing gap in the Park’s historiography. Regarded as ‘one of the greatest wonders of the age’, it is an important contribution to nineteenth-century landscape history with a local focus, but of international significance. But it seeks to interpret the Park’s development until 1914 within a political and cultural context, drawing on economic and social history, as a means of explaining why it was not until the late-nineteenth century that it finally became a focal point for recreation and public health.
