Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in America An artist knows instinctively how many details may be obliterated, and his treatment made more direct and convincing thereby. If circumscribed ability has made this picture of American home life more the work of a photographer than an artist, it is only to be hoped that in the interest of truth I have not left too many lines in the face of Uncle Sam. The world owes to Christianity all that is meant by motherhood, fatherhood, brotherhood, sisterhood, and wifehood. Canon Farrar says that in all the ancient classics there is no reference to the joys of childhood, and for the very good reason that the childhood of the ancients had little joy in it. The Roman's child was counted among his household goods. In Sparta the child was the property of the state rather than of the parents, and a father had as much right to correct the children of his neighbor as his own. Home life was nothing, and to-day in some languages there is little difference between the meaning of home and house. Wherever the Bible is honored, as in England, the real home exists, but where the Bible is not read, even in so-called Christian countries, as in France, there is little of home life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home School of American History We talk a great deal about our power but we do not realize it; we cannot realize it until we understand what it is which gives us power. We use a great many figures to convey an impression of our acreage and crops; but it is the farmer, the mechanic and the merchant who are the real capital of the country. Their character, energy, intelligence, thrift and practical sagacity constitute our real wealth the wealth which is not subject to the fluctuations of the market or the untimely conditions of the weather. This volume tells the story of material growth as fully and more comprehensively than most books but it tells also the story of America as it is written in the life, character and habits of the American man and woman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in All Lands To learn all this we must visit them in imagination, travel in fancy around the earth and see its people in their homes or at their occupations, and learn what strange customs they have and how they differ from ourselves. It is to give the young student information upon such matters that this book has been written. The author asks them to go about with him in a series of journeys at home, each journey devoted to one phase of man's doings, such as his food, his clothing, his habitations, and the like. To and fro, back and forth, they will be taken, from America to Europe, from Asia to Africa and the ocean islands, everywhere looking upon men in their homes and observing the many peculiar customs they possess, often very strange and odd to us. This is the way to give life to geography. The study of the map and the text-book needs to be followed by fuller information about the ways of the world and the habits of its people, and this book is offered as an aid to that end. It does not undertake to tell all the story, it deals with only one series of facts, but these are of a kind important in themselves and which help to give geography a liveliness and vitality which it does not usually possess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Family: A Sociological Problem Ome, around which cluster charms and attrae tions of love and living, where the real and ideal may ever meet, is said to be the word, the sweetest and richest to the American mind. But home means simply the family in its nest, its abiding place, though plain and humble, where all gather, eat, sleep, and have their common livelihood, breathing an ambient air, radiant with many tinted hues of cheering, inspiring love. Love makes the home the garden of Eden, with its rivers, trees, and flowers, and every grace and mark of beauty that nature can afford, but intertwined with love, as a twin ele ment to make up the family, is livelihood, wherein arise the claims of hunger, appetite and bodily needs, the thorns and thistles to be rid of, by the sweat of thy face. Out of the garden of love at least for a while, must Adam go to toil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in America, or the Wigwam and the Cabin The revolutionary war had but a little while been concluded. The British had left the country; but peace did not imply re pose. The community was still in that state of ferment which was natural enough to passions, not yet at rest, which had been brought into exercise and action during the protracted seven years' struggle through which the nation had just passed. The state was overrun by idlers, adventurers, profil gates, and criminals. Disbanded soldiers, half-starved and reckless, occupied the highways, -outlaws, emerging from their hiding-places, skulked about the settlements with an equal sentiment of hate and fear in their hearts - 7patriots were clamouring for justice upon the tories, and sometimes anticipating its course by judgments of their own; while the tories, those against whom the proofs were too strong for de nial or evasion, buckled on their armour for a renewal of the struggle. Such being the condition of the country, it may easily be supposed that life and property lacked many of their necessary securities. Men generally travelled with weapons which were displayed on the smallest provocation; and few who could provide themselves with an escort ventured to travel any distance without one. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.
