In The Storm-Tossed Family, bestselling author Russell Moore (Onward, Christianity Today's 2016 "Book of the Year Award Winner") teaches readers whether you are married or single, whether you long for a child or shepherding a full house, you are part of a family. Family is difficult because family—every family—is an echo of the gospel. Family can be the source of some of the most transcendent human joy, and family can leave us crumpled up on the side of the road. Family can make us who we are, and family can break our hearts. Why would this social arrangement have that much power, for good or for ill, over us?

Book excerpt: Are you ready to reconnect with family in a meaningful way, but unsure where or how to begin? This beloved classic poignantly explains how constructing the genogram, or a basic family tree, can help us to better understand and mend family relationships and dynamics. Readers learn how genograms can reveal a family’s history of estrangement, alliance, divorce, or suicide, exposing intergenerational patterns that prove more than coincidental. The book sheds light on a range of complex issues such as birth order and sibling rivalry, family myths and secrets, cultural differences, couple relationships, and the pivotal role of loss. In the third edition of this revelatory book, “godmother of genograms” Monica McGoldrick and family therapist Tracey Laszloffy focus on aiding readers in their own work to understand their family history and change their role in relationships where there is distance, conflict, or cutoff. Readers will also find new and updated material on the intergenerational transmission of trauma, the ramifications of uncovering family secrets via DNA testing, and more. If you’ve ever struggled to understand the complex dynamics of your family—and your place within it—this book is for you.

Women, far more than men dread the idea of growing old. That is because they subconsciously have the fear that there will be nobody to take care of them, then they grow comparatively old and helpless. The first adjustment to this idea comes in middle age, with its foreshadowing of old age. This is when middle-aged people begin to think about the next stage of life. If a woman has devoted her life to being the center of her family, she may look ahead fearfully to the days to come, when her children will be adults and will have flown the nest. If she has a happy married life, she knows that she has her partner, who is going to grow old with her. But unfortunately sometimes it just happens that homes break up and many people find themselves approaching middle age, and future old age, in loneliness. That is when they begin to take good care of their finances so that they have enough of money, which they can utilize when they are old. Among all the impermanent and threatening shadows of the days to come, a woman may have before her the example of some cantankerous old lady who has become an unloved, and unwelcome burden to her children demanding and less attention from some already hard-pressed daughter-in-law or daughter. And this condition worsens, if that person is ill. In the East, where the idea of sending parents to an old-age home, is still something of which one thinks of with loathing and abhorrence, nursing of the eldest generation is done at home. Affluent families keep home nurses who are professional. Other not so affluent families take care of the elders, not because it is their duty, but because it is part of the Eastern and Oriental social fabric, coming down the ages. However, this idea is slowly being eroded in many cities, because the children are more bothered about making money, instead of giving proper care to their elders. The elders also try their best to keep away from under the children's feet and make sure that they are financially secure. The day of the joint family is slowly and steadily disappearing, when the younger generations used to take care of the older generations. It is often said by Easterners, that in many countries in the West, they have lost the sense of filial duty, which still exists in so many Latin and Eastern countries. This is where old people are respected and taken into their children’s homes. Westerners are often accused of heartlessness, because so often they send their parents away to live the rest of their lives in an old peoples home. This may be right, but one cannot generalize.

This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pages 124. Illustrated with 25 freely reproducible mini-posters In January 2020, China declared the presence of a new contagious and potentially deadly coronavirus. After a month, the epidemic has already taken on exceptional dimensions. There are over a thousand deaths. The outbreak has spread to over fifty countries outside of China. Only the knowledge of the danger can help to overcome it, therefore there is a great need for clear information. Often, however, we receive fragmented information, seasoned with technical terminologies or distorted by the disinformers who infest the web. This book was written to be understood. The author is an expert communicator in the field of scientific subjects. He clearly presents a large amount of advice and recommendations, first of all those suggested by the major international authorities including the WHO (World Health Organization) and the ECDC (European Center for Disease Pre-vention and Control). These precautions and recommendations can be applied at home, in the workplace or on the go. They allow you to protect yourself and others in every situation. The book clearly answers many doubts. These include the recognition of symptoms, the usefulness of the face mask, the use of antibiotics, relationships with food, goods and pets. The book contains a comprehensive discussion on coronavirus. In addition, the book explains how this infection originated, and how it developed from the Chinese city of Wuhan. A chapter is dedicated to all the delays of the Chinese government and to all the conspiracy interpretations that accompany the birth of this epidemic. In the final part of the book, the author comments on the future development of this infection, which could become a global pandemic. In addition to causing tens of thousands of deaths, this coronavirus could generate economic depression with unimaginable outcomes.
