Book excerpt: With its patchwork of secluded courtyards, gardens and narrow tree-lined streets, New York s Greenwich Village is one of the very few neighborhoods that still retains the charm and timelessness of old New York. In this overview of houses from the early nineteenth century to contemporary Modernist examples, Kevin Murphy explores the architecture and interiors of eighteen houses and two gardens located in what has become one of New York City s most exclusive and desirable residential communities. Beginning with the Robert Blum House (1827), "The Houses of Greenwich Village" traces the rich history behind each home and delves into the compelling biographies of its original owners and architects, revealing the evolution of structure, design, and style in the neighborhood throughout the nineteenth century, as well as its vibrant and at times eccentric character into the twentieth century. The stunning photographs by Paul Rocheleau were specially commissioned for this book and give readers unprecedented access to some of the most beautiful homes in New York."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Houses of Irvington- Architecture of An American Village by Steven M. Reiss presents a unique perspective on the residential design of this small coastal Virginia community. Reiss has built on the villages' selection in 2000 into the National Register of Historic Places by examining its wide range of unique and well-preserved architectural house styles. Reiss sees Irvington as a living example of the chronology of American residential design. He believes that the history of any community can be better understood through the architectural lens of its homes constructed over time. The book offers a visual history of the evolution of American house design using photographs of over 40 Irvington homes and nine distinct home styles. The book examines each of these house styles in detail beginning with Irvington's oldest house, the 1740 Colonial designed Wilders Grant and takes the reader through the next several centuries of American houses up to and including a number of contemporary houses in Irvington. Using historic and current photographs and pen and ink sketches of each house style by the author the book frames the houses of Irvington from the mid-1700s through the Steamboat Era to the picturesque Irvington of today.” A special section of the book is titled Yesterday and Today, which looks at a number of photographs of Irvington buildings and compares them with photographs from when they were first built.?The Houses of Irvington reinforces how a community's character is deeply rooted in its past and that while structures can not always be saved, they should be remembered as their stories are told and retold through time.

Book excerpt: "Newport News, Virginia. Established in 1918, Hilton Village was the first public housing project built in the United States. Spurred on by Newport News Shipbuilding president Homer Ferguson, it was created to house shipyard workers during World War I. The village was the city's first planned community and its first National Register of Historic Places district. Hilton's distinctive cottage-style architecture, reminiscent of an English village, is one of the first examples of the New Urbanism and Garden City movements in America. Along the tree-lined streets are homes and shops that might have been pulled from a Dickens novel. The vision of the leaders who crafted Hilton Village--the shipyard's Ferguson, Harvard University town planner Henry Hubbard, and world-renowned architect Francis Joannes--remains apparent." -- Page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2022 "A frothy picaresque that ... vibrates to the “sweet celestial confusion” of Soutine’s painting: delirious and earthy, reverent and irreligious." -- The New York Times Book Review A wild, effervescent, absinthe-soaked novel that tells of the life of the extraordinary artist Chaim Soutine Steve Stern’s astonishing new novel The Village Idiot begins on a glorious spring day in Paris 1917. Amid the carnage of World War I, some of the foremost artists of the age have chosen to stage a boat race. At the head of the regatta is Amedeo Modigliani, seated regally in a bathtub pulled by a flock of canvasback ducks. But unbeknownst to the competition, he has a secret advantage: his young friend, the immigrant painter Chaim Soutine, is hauling the tub from underwater. Soutine, an unwashed, misfit artist (who incidentally can’t swim) has been persuaded by the Italian to don a ponderous diving suit and trudge along the floor of the river Seine. Disoriented and confused by the artificial air in his helmet Chaim stumbles through the events of his past and future life. It’s quite an extraordinary life. From his impoverished beginnings in an East European shtetl to his equally destitute days in Paris during the Années Folles, the Crazy Years, from the Cinderella patronage of the American collector Albert Barnes, who raises him from poverty to international attention, to his perilous flight from the Nazi occupation of France, Chaim Soutine remains driven by his unrelenting passion to paint. To be sure, there are notable distractions, such as his unlikely friendship with Modigliani, who drags him from brothels to midnight felonies to a duel at dawn; there are the romances with remarkable women who compete with and sometimes salvage his obsession. But there is also, always on the horizon, the coming storm that threatens to sweep away Chaim and a generation of gifted Jewish refugees from a tradition that would outlaw their longing to make art. Wildly inventive, as funny as it is heart-breaking, The Village Idiot is a luminous fever-dream of a novel, steeped in the heady atmosphere of a Paris that was the cultural capital of the universe, a place where anything seemed possible.

As early as the 1600s it was already caught in the great paradox of globalization: how can you stay local and relish your own home cooking, while tasting the delights of the global marketplace? Menus, recipes and bad colonial poetry combine with Wilk's sharp anthropological insight to give an important new perspective on the perils and problems of globalization.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of the DI Amy Winter series comes a thriller about a shocking disappearance--and the village that has conspired to keep the truth buried. Ten years ago, the Harper family disappeared. Their deserted cottage was left with the water running, the television playing cartoons, the oven ready for baking. The doors were locked from the inside. Overnight, the sleepy village of Nighbrook became notorious as the scene of the unsolved mystery of the decade, an epicentre for ghoulish media speculation. For crime journalist Naomi, solving the case has turned into an obsession. So now, with Ivy Cottage finally listed for sale, it's her chance to mount an investigation like no other. And her husband and stepdaughter don't really need to know what happened in their new home... do they? But Nighbrook isn't quite the village she expected. No one wants to talk to her. No one will answer her questions. And as she becomes increasingly uneasy, it's clear that the villagers are hiding something--that there is something very dark at the heart of this rural idyll. And the deeper she digs, the more it seems her investigation could be more dangerous than she ever imagined... In raking up the secrets of the past, has she made her own family the next target?

Book excerpt: This book explores the economic coping practices of rural widows in the aftermath of the Cambodian civil war. War produces a preponderance of widows, often young widows with small children in their care. Rural widows must feed their families and educate their children despite rural poverty and the lack of opportunities for women. The economics of widowhood is therefore a significant social problem in less developed countries. The widows' predominant economic plan was to combine rice cultivation with an assortment of microenterprises, a "rice plus" strategy. Many widows were unable to grow enough rice on their land to feed their families. They filled the hunger gap by raising cash through microenterprises to purchase additional rice. Gender work roles were both permeable and persistent, allowing a flexible sexual division of labor in the short run but maintaining traditional roles in the long run. Most widows called on relatives or exchanged transplanting labor for male plowing services, although a few women took up the plow themselves. The study also explores widows' access to key economic resources such as land, credit, and education. War decimated widows' family support networks, including the loss of children, their social security. The study concludes that Cambodia's gender arrangement offered many economic options to widows but also devalued their labor in a cultural structure of inequality. Gender, poverty, and war interacted to reduce widows' financial resources, accounting for their economic vulnerability.
