OVERVIEW The incident rate of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States has begun to stabilize. However, in absolute numbers, the number of ESRD patients continues to grow, primarily due to "baby boomers" reaching middle age. While the patients aged 45-64 make up the largest portion of the incident population, patients age 75 and older have the highest incident rates of ESRD. Although the majority of ESRD patients receive hemodialysis, approximately 6% of them are treated with peritoneal dialysis. Many of these patients receive homecare services and many of them have co-morbidities that reduce their ability to manage activities of daily living (ADLs). Therefore home health aides are often assigned to these patients. While not assigned to provide care directly related to the dialysis, it is nonetheless important for home health aides to understand the process and to learn their roles in providing care to these patients.

The benchmarking capabilities of the Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) reports provide agencies with comparative data on patient improvement in performance of ADLs. The data have helped agencies develop quality improvement activities aimed at increasing independence levels of patients. Home health aides are crucial to success in this goal.
