En este trabajo partimos de que la mujer tiene ciertos obstáculos para acceder a la función directiva y analizamos diversas teorías que asocian el tipo de liderazgo transformacional con características típicamente femeninas y el liderazgo transaccional con características típicamente masculinas. Para verificar la teoría, realizamos un estudio mediante el Cuestionario Multifactorial de Liderazgo (MLQ) de Bass y Avolio a hombres y mujeres líderes en la ciudad de León. Los resultados revelan que existen diferencias significativas entre hombres y mujeres en el liderazgo transformacional, obteniendo la puntuación más alta las mujeres, pero no existen diferencias en el liderazgo transaccional ni pasivo/evitador. Además se obtienen correlaciones más altas en el tipo transformacional respecto de las variables de resultado de eficacia, satisfacción y esfuerzo extra. Se discuten y se comparan estos resultados con la literatura aplicada y se llega a la conclusión de que las mujeres utilizan características más propias del liderazgo transformacional y que este tipo de líder obtiene más eficacia, rendimiento y esfuerzo extra en la organización y con sus subordinados que si se utiliza un tipo de liderazgo con características del liderazgo transaccional.
