Book excerpt: Using today's most leading-edge therapies and breakthroughs in the science of longevity, C. Norman Shealy, one of the pioneering holistic physicians of our time, shows how we can healthfully age to one hundred, and beyond. The idea of living well beyond one hundred years-and enjoying those years in good health-used to be the stuff of science fiction. No longer. C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., whom Caroline Myss calls a "wizard-genius-scientist-mystic-physician," offers Life Beyond 100: Secrets of the Fountain of Youth. In this deeply learned and revolutionary book, Dr. Shealy provides a new concept of longevity, one that reveals that we can live far longer than current science suggests. Basic healthy living and the use of alternative therapies have long been touted as "the way" to well-being, but Dr. Shealy takes these tenets a step further. From the physiology of stress and its effect on the human mind and body to the importance of DHEA; from the proven techniques of photostimulation and biofeedback training to groundbreaking suggestions for alleviating depression; from Shealy's electromagnetic framework of life to his recommendations for optimal health, Life Beyond 100 presents a detailed roadmap to achieve healthy aging-or "youthing." The result of years of clinical practice and cutting-edge research, Life Beyond 100 also exposes the fallacies behind many of the claims made by the medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry. Shealy argues that rather than increasing people's life expectancy, these two groups create the opposite effect, consigning hundreds of thousands of people to an often miserable and premature old age by treating symptoms with an antidote-prescription medicine-that is often worse than the ailment itself. As a counterpoint, Life Beyond 100 provides the most ambitious- yet medically grounded and commonsensical-longevity program available. Easy to follow and supported by advanced research, Dr. Shealy's guide to uncovering the secrets of youthful aging redefines the concept of human longevity and offers a new vision of healthy living to one hundred and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As water resources diminish with increasing population and economic pressures as well as global climate change, this book addresses a subject of ever increasing local and global importance. In many areas water is not only a vital resource but is also endowed with an agency and power that connects people, spirit beings, place and space. The culmination of a decade of ethnographic research in Timor Leste, this book gives a critical account of the complex social and ecological specificities of a water-focused society in one of the world’s newest nations. Comparatively framed by international examples from Asia, South America and Africa that reveal the need to incorporate and foreground cultural diversity in water governance, it provides deep insight into the global challenge of combining customary and modern water governance regimes. In doing so it addresses a need for sustained critical ecological inquiry into the social issues of water governance. Focusing on the eastern region of Timor Leste, the book explores local uses, beliefs and rituals associated with water. It identifies the ritual ecological practices, contexts and scales through which the use, negotiation over and sharing of water occurs and its influence on the entire sociocultural system. Building on these findings, the book proposes effective conceptual and methodological tools for advancing community engagement and draws out lessons for more integrated and sustainable water governance approaches that can be applied elsewhere. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers in environmental studies, environmental policy and governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Beyond Theoria Towards Theosis focuses on the telos of man as understood in Plato’s theoria, envisioned in the allegory of the cave, and early Christian reinterpretation of theoria as theosis. In his famed allegory of the cave, Plato maintains that real life exists beyond our base perceptions of reality and is found in the realm of ideas. Theoria is eternal rest in this realm and is understood as the telos of mankind. Plato’s theoria underwent change as it was reinterpreted under middle-Platonic and neo-Platonic thought. These systems incorporated a more mature idea of the divine than Plato, but still minimized the material world. This book explores how early Christianity inherited Plato’s cosmology and terminology. Theoria was also reinterpreted within the Christian context. Eventually the term was abandoned for theosis. Theosis is beyond theoria, as it includes contemplation of the forms as well as union with the source of the forms and the affirmation of the material realm. In this volume, Justin A. Davis shows how the Orthodox use of icons can be key to understanding theosis. The icon is a material object that connects to a higher reality, and ultimately toward union with the divine. Plato’s cosmology is collapsed and transfigured in union with the uncreated energy of God. Icons are the depiction of spiritual ascesis and the new telos of man, theosis.

Book excerpt: Extra Virginity is a rich, fluid and evocative account of the history and alchemy of olive oil, and of how the finest artisanal oil-manufacturers - in the deep south of Italy, around Australia, the Mediterranean, in California and beyond - are endangered by the widespread fraud of one of mankind's oldest and most versatile products. The best oils are made by authentic artist-craftsmen, who marry centuries-old agricultural wisdom with cutting-edge extraction technology, and now produce the finest oils in history. However, these producers are being steadily driven from the market: extra-virgin olive oil is difficult and expensive to make, yet alarmingly easy to adulterate. Skilled oil criminals are flooding the market with low-cost, faux extra-virgins, reaping rich profits and undercutting honest producers, whilst authorities in Italy, the US and elsewhere turn a blind eye.

Book excerpt: In 1976, a twenty-three-year old German girl named Anneliese Michel died following months of exorcism sessions. Despite the fact that she had been medically diagnosed with epilepsy and manic depressive psychosis, two priests conducted numerous exorcism sessions and ignored her mental, medical, and physical condition. Ms. Michel's death due to misdiagnosed demonic possession and negligently applied exorcism was neither the first nor the last case of such negligence to occur. Complete familiarity with the spiritual elements of demonical posssession and attack is the sole focus of most demonologists, exorcists, and clerical members of Christianity. Few clerics have a sufficient understanding of psychiatric conditions that may mimic the symptoms of demonic possession. The result has been catastrophic for many innocent people over the centuries. The overlooking or ignoring of a person's medical and psychiatric condition is the primary culprit behind misdiagnosed possession and botched exorcisms resulting in death or serious bodily injury. Reverend Father John Duffey, a Reformed Catholic Church of North America priest, renders a standardized approach to properly investigating suspected demoniacal possession, determining the existence of possession, and in the safe execution of exorcism/deliverance acceptable to virtually all denominations of the Christian faith.
