I'm sure it is, but a crown of gold ... or a crown of thorns?"" 34 year old Linda Wilson travels to Holy Island to walk in the footsteps of the past. To relive the memory of days she spent on the island with her husband, who had recently passed away. She comes across a 'stranger' who gradually transforms her life, not always for the good, in a tale that grips the reader from the first chapter. The book is more fact than fiction, and every aspect of the storyline (as regards dates and historical reference) is true. Although it is a novel, it will leave you wondering how much of it is accurate ... in the sense ... what do they REALLY have hidden away on Lindisfarne?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I wrote my first book Journeys of a Lifetime in 2004, it reflected how dreams of mineof visiting unknown places in the UK, countries across the North Sea in Europe, and seemingly far-off continents of America, Africa, Asia, and Australiabecame a reality. That was mainly due to the advent of air travel, package holidays, and the massive growth of international travel in the second half of the twentieth century. Nine years on from that book, in my second book, our traveling had continued, and in that time, having seen the arrival of four grandchildren, naturally they have joined in some of the journeys. At that time, our fourth grandchild just made the book with her name and date and place of birth. Naturally, there was a need for another book so that she, as well as her brother and cousins, will all be able to read as they get older about their grandparents travels, and in particular, some of which included them. Although places visited in the three years since the last book include some return trips to old favorites, this book reflects only the new places visited. In particular, India, the Middle East, the Far East, Eastern Europe, and nearer home the beautiful Northeast England, it reflects the visits of the grandchildren, featured more this time. As we now have two grandchildren living in the Costa del Sol, as well as the Aussie part of the family, Spain, and Australia are now regular destinations. Although the UK is much smaller in area than those two countries, it is packed with wonderful places to visit, so trips at home are still often very much included in our travels. Added to that, cruising has taken off in the last decade a bit like package deals to Europe did in the 1960s and has provided a very enjoyable new dimension to the journeys made. Cruises are featured several times in this book. More Journeys of a Lifetime and now Even More Journeys of a Lifetime reflect the further growth in long-haul travel and the massive increase in cruising. Hope you enjoy my further travels around this small world of ours, going on from those early dreams of mine and continuing to do so!

Book excerpt: Masterpiece of medieval manuscript production and decoration, its Latin text glossed throughout in Old English, the Lindisfarne Gospels is a vital witness to the book culture, art, and Christianity of the Anglo-Saxons and their interactions with Ireland, Italy, and the wider world. The expert studies in this collection examine in turn the archaeology of Holy Island, relations between Ireland and Northumbria, early Northumbrian book culture, the relationship of the Lindisfarne Gospels to the Church universal, the canon table apparatus of the manuscript, the decoration of its Canon Tables, its systems of liturgical readings, the mathematical principles underlying the design of its carpet pages, points of comparison and contrast with the Book of Durrow, the Latin and Old English texts, the nature of the glossator’s ink, and the meaning of enigmatic words and phrases within the vernacular gloss. Approaching the material from a series of new perspectives, the contributors shed new light on numerous aspects of this magnificent manuscript, its milieux, and its significance.

Book excerpt: This book explores cathedrals, past and present, as spaces for religious but also wider cultural practices. Contributors from history, anthropology, sociology, and religious studies trace major continuities and shifts in the location of cathedrals within religious, civic, urban, and economic landscapes of pre- and post-Reformation Christianity. While much of the focus is on England, other European and global contexts are referenced as authors explore ways in which cathedrals have been, and remain, distinctive spaces of adjacent ritual, political and social activity, capable of taking on lives of their own as sites of worship, pilgrimage, and governance. A major theme of the book is that of replication, pointing to the ways in which cathedrals echo each other materially and ritually in processes of mutual borrowing and competition, while a cathedral can also provide a reference point for smaller constituencies of religious practice such as a diocese or parish. As this volume demonstrates, the contemporary resurgence of interest in pilgrimage, the impact of ‘Caminoisation’, and the (re)presentation of cathedrals as cultural heritage further add to the attractions, popularity, and complexities of cathedrals in the 21st century. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, Religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kim Sturgess was a weekend sailor: he enjoyed club racing and several brief sailing holidays, but had never attempted a substantial expedition. Reaching the age of fifty focused the mind and he decided to sail around Britain. While many cruising sailors would not contemplate a 1900 nautical mile voyage, he broke the voyage into a series of day sails, making it an achievable ambition for him, largely single-handed, and for many other weekend sailors who might dream of sailing around their home island. This book tells the quirky traveller's narrative of the voyage and visits to forty-eight towns. Evoking the spirit of both Jerome K. Jerome with his Three Men in a Boat and Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World, Kim shares his thoughts and struggles, recounting how easy it is for anyone to become an adventurer here at home. But don't expect to always agree with him – he has been described as "the Jeremy Clarkson of yachting"!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will guide you in a simple and illustrative way through all aspects related to crowd behaviour, including sociological theories, methods of crowd control, people detection and tracking, and crowd simulation and prediction, while examining previous accidents to learn from the past. Crowds are a constant presence in most cities around the globe and mass gatherings are attracting an increasing number of people. While experience can help manage large crowds and plan mass events, knowledge on crowd behaviour is fundamental for successfully dealing with unexpected situations, improving current practices and implementing state-of-the-art technologies in management strategies. After letting people laugh about the controversy on colliding pedestrians, with this book, two of the Ig Nobel laureates on pedestrian traffic will make you think (and learn) presenting through a collaborative approach, combining theoretical with practical advice, the science behind crowd dynamics and the importance it plays in our increasingly urbanized society. Fundamental aspects related to crowd management are presented using simple concepts requiring little or no knowledge of mathematics or engineering. Professionals involved in pedestrian traffic, as well as students and researchers entering the field of crowd dynamics, will find this book a useful interdisciplinary introduction on the subject, exploring both fundamental background information and more specific topics related to crowd management.
