Book Synopsis What Happens in Holy Communion? by : Michael Welker
Download or read book What Happens in Holy Communion? written by Michael Welker and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the large churches in the world agree on this: communion is the highest expression of the church unity. Yet it is exactly the act of communion that historically has given rise to vehement controversies among the churches. This new book not only explores the meaning of holy communion but also marks a turning point on the way to common understanding. Welker gives a clear explanation of holy communion based on the biblical tradition and evaluates the ecumenical discourse on communion of the past thirty years. In the process he answers such often posed questions as "What do we mean when we say that Christ is present in communion?" "How are Christ's body and blood connected with bread and wine?" "What is the difference between the Christian Supper and the Jewish Passover meal?" and "Are children allowed to share in communion?"

In this book, Richard Burridge investigates a wide range of proposed options, both in the everyday physical world (fasting the eucharist, spiritual communion, solo and concelebrated communions, lay presidency, drive-in and drive-thru eucharists, and extended communion) and in cyberspace (computer services for avatars, broadcast eucharists online, and narrowcast communions using webinar software like Zoom). Along the way, he tackles the whole range of concepts of the church, ordination, and the eucharist. This book is essential reading for anyone desiring an informed and provocative guide to the theology and practice of holy communion in our challenging times.
Book Synopsis The Saint's Communion With God by : William Strong
Download or read book The Saint's Communion With God written by William Strong and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to have true communion with Jesus Christ? Strong takes great pains and careful consideration to bring the reader into a thorough understanding of this most vital Christian doctrine. His main text, in which he masterfully exegetes and applies, is Exodus 20:24, “In all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.” Strong covers the text’s main idea that, 1. by recording, remembering or mentioning the name of God is meant setting up the worship of God in his ordinances, and, 2. that wherever the name of God is so recorded, remembered, or mentioned, (wherever God is worshipped in his ordinances), there he promises and commands a blessing, or there he will meet those that record his name in worshipping him with a blessing. This is true communion with God through his son Jesus Christ. Strong shows, 1. the grounds of all the fellowship and the communion that the saints have with God in ordinances, 2. the properties of this communion, 3. the several acts of communion, and, 4. those glorious ends that God aimed at in giving forth communion to the saints in ordinances. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Synopsis For the Communion of the Churches by : Groupe des Dombes
Download or read book For the Communion of the Churches written by Groupe des Dombes and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-17 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded by Abb Paul Couturier in 1937, the Groupe des Dombes is a Protestant-Catholic coalition in French-speaking Europe uniting Reformed, Lutheran, and Catholic scholars in a common spirit of prayer, dialogue, and discernment. Its pioneering work of reconciliation has influenced many other official ecumenical dialogues. This volume presents six statements produced by the Groupe des Dombes from 1971 to 1991, which appear here together in English translation for the first time. These substantial documents express the Groupe s keen insights into the renewal of theology and church life that is necessary for progress toward full ecclesial unity and they invite churches to pursue fruitful dialogue, mutual understanding, harmony, and the hopeful vision of a future in full communion. In the journey of the churches toward the unity for which Christ prayed, no other informal group of scholars has been so influential or long-standing in their service as the French Groupe des Dombes. We can be grateful to have this group of texts drawn together, including one newly translated, which have had such a historic role in developing agreements among the churches. The skillful introduction makes these texts a useful resource for teaching, exploring ecumenical history, and providing resources for church leaders in their response to Christ s prayer that they all may be one. Jeffrey Gros, FSC Memphis Theological Seminary Until now, most of these Groupe des Dombes documents have not been readily accessible to English-language readers. . . . We are very grateful to Catherine E. Clifford for collecting these important documents and for translating the text on the papal ministry. This book will help many people to progress toward the communion of the churches. Joseph Famere Catholic University of Louvain

Book Synopsis Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee by : Shawn O. Strout
Download or read book Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee written by Shawn O. Strout and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Sunday around the world, Christians offer money and in-kind gifts to the church, traditionally known as alms. For communities that celebrate the Eucharist regularly, bread and wine, traditionally known as oblations, often accompany these gifts. What does it mean theologically for Christians to offer gifts to God, who first offered the greatest gift of Jesus Christ? This question regarding the role of alms and oblations in the liturgy was among the most controversial questions of the English Reformations in the sixteenth century. While the eucharistic prayer proper has often been the site of this theological controversy, the offertory rite has also received great attention. The 1552 English Book of Common Prayer excised all references to oblation in the offertory rite, but oblationary language and actions, such as the offertory procession, returned in full force by the twentieth century. The movement from the near elimination of oblation in the offertory rite to its widespread usage in the churches of the Anglican Communion is a remarkable liturgical and theological development. Using liturgical theology's tools of historical, textual, and contextual analyses, this book explores how this development occurred and why it is important for the church today.
Book Synopsis Maximus the Confessor as a European Philosopher by : Sotiris Mitralexis
Download or read book Maximus the Confessor as a European Philosopher written by Sotiris Mitralexis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Maximus the Confessor’s thought has flourished in recent years: international conferences, publications and articles, new critical editions and translations mark a torrent of interest in the work and influence of perhaps the most sublime of the Byzantine Church Fathers. It has been repeatedly stated that the Confessor’s thought is of eminently philosophical interest. However, no dedicated collective scholarly engagement with Maximus the Confessor as a philosopher has taken place—and this volume attempts to start such a discussion. Apart from Maximus’ relevance and importance for philosophy in general, a second question arises: should towering figures of Byzantine philosophy like Maximus the Confessor be included in an overview of the European history of philosophy, or rather excluded from it—as is the case today with most histories of European philosophy? Maximus’ philosophy challenges our understanding of what European philosophy is. In this volume, we begin to address these issues and examine numerous aspects of Maximus’ philosophy—thereby also stressing the interdisciplinary character of Maximian studies. Contributors include: Fr. Maximos Constas, Justin Shaun Coyle, Vladimir Cvetković, Natalie Depraz, Demetrios Harper, Michael Harrington, Georgi Kapriev, Karolina Kochańczyk-Bonińska, Nicholas Loudovikos, Andrew Louth, John Panteleimon Manoussakis, Michail Mantzanas, Smilen Markov, Sotiris Mitralexis, Marcin Podbielski, Dionysios Skliris, Georgios Steiris, Stoyan Tanev, Torstein Theodor Tollefsen, Jordan Daniel Wood

Book Synopsis Revelation, Mystical Phenomena and Divine Promises by : Deacon Albert Graham
Download or read book Revelation, Mystical Phenomena and Divine Promises written by Deacon Albert Graham and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader will be appraised of how God has been speaking to His people through public and private revelation for over 2000 years. A special chapter in this work deals with some saints and holy people who have had private revelations about or visits from souls in purgatory, hell or heaven. Another chapter and several of the appendixes are devoted to Marian Apparitions to include those that are approved, not approved and those appending a decision by the Church. By far one of the greatest strengths of this undertaking is the identification of some 43 categories of concomitant extraordinary phenomena and some of the saints and holy people who have experienced them. Color paintings by artists are depicted of some saints experiencing such mystical phenomena. Another unique feature of the book is a listing of some 600 individuals from the 13th to the 21st centuries who bore the stigmata. By knowing that God is present and alive to His people this book may help bring others to a deeper faith in God.
