Book excerpt: Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach was one of the most original and inspired Jewish personalities of the twentieth century. In this incredible volume, Yitta Halberstam Mandelbaum, a devoted student of Reb Shlomo, gathers dozens of stories about this charismatic, loving Jewish leader. The episodes retold here by Reb Shlomo's followers and admirers underscore his unfailing generosity, his capacity to love unconditionally, and his desire to reconnect every Jew with his or her heritage. As a whole, the collection reveals how many individuals were touched by Reb Shlomo, and serves as a moving tribute to the man many consider a tzaddik (righteous one).

How can God who is far above us all be upon this earth and found to be dwelling among us and how can we be a refl ection of Him? How can it be that God is in His Creation, and His Creation in God? Is the Father not the hidden One, from whom all things come? Is the Son not the saving One, by whom we are redeemed this day? Is the Spirit not the guiding One, through whom we shall come to Heaven? And are we not called to be as He is, one with the One LORD forever?

Book excerpt: 'Which of us do you prefer?' As a baby, Michael Clemenger was handed over to the unloving care of a religious-run children's home. Aged eight, he was transferred to St Joseph's Industrial School in Tralee, Co. Kerry. Chosen as their 'favourite' by two Christian Brothers, Michael endured years of sexual abuse at the hands of both men. Brother Price would strike at night, while Brother Roberts took his pleasure in a weekly bathtime ritual. And even their 'protection' did not save the boy from merciless beatings at the hands of other sadistic Brothers in the notorious institution. Despite the unbelievable trauma of his early life, Michael emerged unbroken, determined to make something of himself, and also to find the mother he had never known. A story of remarkable spirit and courage, set against a background of the prejudices and neglect of Irish society in the 1960s.

Book excerpt: "It is difficult to define the starting-point of the modern movement, which may be called the rediscovery of St Francis--by which I mean the movement through which St. Francis has become to the world as a whole what he was, and indeed more than what he was, to Umbria and Italy, of the first half of the thirteenth century ; more than what he was to them, because while the devotion and love of the twentieth century cannot well exceed that of the thirteenth, the earlier century could not see him from the perspective of 700 years or realise how great a contribution his life and work were to make to humanity."--Pages 248-249, The rediscovery of St. Francis of Assisi, Walter Seton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work, On The Trinity, was translated into several languages and played an important role in the spreading of the ideals of Eastern and Western Christianity. Augustine of Hippo, also known as Augustine, Saint Augustine, St. Austin, St. Augoustinos, Blessed Augustine, or St. Augustine the Blessed, was Bishop of Hippo Regius (present-day Annaba, Algeria). He was a Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian who lived in the Roman Africa Province. His writings were very influential in the development of Western Christianity. According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine “established anew the ancient Faith.” In his early years he was heavily influenced by Manichaeism and afterward by the Neo-Platonism of Plotinus. In the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order; his memorial is celebrated 28 August, the day of his death. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, the alleviation of sore eyes, and a number of cities and dioceses. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fathers of Reformation due to his teaching on salvation and divine grace. In the Eastern Orthodox Church he is blessed, and his feast day is celebrated on June 15th. Among the Orthodox, he is called “Blessed Augustine”, or “St. Augustine the Blessed.”
