Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holoholo is the Hawaiian word for walking out with no destination in mind. In the three sections of this book, Barbara Hamby walks out into the current American chaos with its inferno of wars, street violence, apocalyptic fantasies, and racial tension. Fueled by an American lingo that embraces slang, Yiddish, street talk, and the yearning to be able to describe her moment in time, these poems encompass the complicated past, difficult present, and unknown future. Every foray offers a glimpse of the world constructed from one woman’s collage of consciousness. Ode on My Nightingale My nightingale is the conquistador of moonlight, the engine of divine hullabaloo, the dance party of shining headlights on a dark road past midnight, the thrill of that first kiss in the battered Chevette, the wrong turn that made me burn my map, clap twice, summon my djinn. My nightingale is the stake in my heart that can’t be dislodged, the hodge-podge of my brain at two a.m. when the drunks have gone home or passed out in the street. My nightingale trills in the darkness, thinks of nothing but his song, says forget me at your peril for I am the tiara of rain that falls from the purple sky, the lies you tell yourself to wake up from your dreams, so listen, for my song will fade into nothing, but nothing is made without me. I am the cosmologist of the atomic, high priest of everything you never wanted to be, all your highjacked dreams, the screams in the muddle of night, the beam of starlight on the river of sleep, for we are alone, my darling, on this planet of night, and I am your little god, your drinking water straight from the stream, for my song is spooling into the night forever and ever, amen. I am the derivative of sin. O let me in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventure icon Hannah Lyndsey Brown was a throw back, a kind of human time capsule who embodied the morality and values of a different era. She'd spent years crossing oceans, solo, on her own sailboat, away from urban society and her home country. She came home to new rules. Now she was about to go on a journey she'd never signed up for . . . one that would be a masterclass that would change her forever. ""When Pigs and Horses Fly"", is a novel that shares adventure icon Hannah Lyndsey Brown's memoir of an incredible journey/adventure that takes her across a raw, uncensored America, and then on a wild voyage up to Alaska's Prince William Sound, and, finally, an accidental sojourn in a mysterious, secret place hidden in plain sight in the Hawaiian archipelago. There are warnings, too, in this book that the reader dare not ignore; under the new rules people don't fuss over your serious injury or death at the hands of those you trust most.

Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, while America was in the throes of the first major fabricated oil shortage in history, Tom Archer, recent academy graduate, climbed aboard his first ship as the new third mate on the BALTIMORE CANON, an old rusting T-2 tanker engaged in the Alaskan Prudhoe Bay oil trade. The youngest officer by at least eight years, he found himself frequently filling in for the second mate, occasionally for the chief, and once for the captain. This is the story of those voyages, coming directly from the third mate's personal log, including a realistic accounting of an off-shore oil operation that most people have no access to information about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ku and Hina—man and woman—were the great ancestral gods of heaven and earth for the ancient Hawaiians. They were life's fruitfulness and all the generations of mankind, both those who are to come and those already born. The Hawaiian gods were like great chiefs from far lands who visited among the people, entering their daily lives sometimes as humans or animals, sometimes taking residence in a stone or wooden idol. As years passed, the families of gods grew and included the trickster Maui, who snared the sun, and fiery Pele of the volcano. Ancient Hawaiians lived by the animistic philosophy that assigned living souls to animals, trees, stones, stars, and clouds, as well as to humans. Religion and mythology were interwoven in Hawaiian culture; and local legends and genealogies were preserved in song, chant, and narrative. Martha Beckwith was the first scholar to chart a path through the hundreds of books, articles, and little-known manuscripts that recorded the oral narratives of the Hawaiian people. Her book has become a classic work of folklore and ethnology, and the definitive treatment of Hawaiian mythology. With an introduction by Katherine Luomala.

Book excerpt: This book is a 'must-read' for all military people and those who are interested in World War Two history of the South Pacific fighting. MOST DATES, PEOPLE, PLACES AND EVENTS ARE AUTHENTIC AND HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. The author knows naval practice and procedures from experience, and gives us a gripping account of "Operation Sidewinder", a superb battle plan for the quick-and-deadly PT (Patrol Torpedo) boats during the Marines' fierce and bitter fighting for Guadalcanal and its vital Henderson Field. The story begins in the President of the United States Oval Office with initial measures taken by powerful historic figures, steps that defy reader conclusions, and quickly gathers strength and direction as it draws the reader along with its gradually quickening pace without disclosing the culmination of "Operation Sidewinder" until the inevitable action EXPLODES! The ending is a shocker!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the rich and complex pattern of morphosyntactic variation in the Bantu languages, providing a comprehensive overview of the wealth of empirical and conceptual work in the field. The chapters discuss data from some 80 Bantu languages as well as drawing on a wider comparative set of more than 200 languages from across Central, Eastern and Southern Africa: some studies focus on one specific language in a comparative context; some investigate fine-grained variation among a close-knit group of languages; and others present large-scale comparative studies spanning the whole of the Bantu-speaking area. The contributors address a range of topics from a micro-variation perspective, primarily in the areas of nominal and verbal morphology and syntax and information structure. The volume highlights key aspects of contemporary research in Bantu morphosyntax and outlines distinct and novel approaches to prominent questions; it combines the most recent thinking on morphosyntactic variation in Bantu with different theoretical and methodological approaches and novel empirical data from a wide range of languages.

Book excerpt: "Yankee Tsunami: An Engulfing Wave" by Andrew R. DiConti is a historical novel that covers a period of a year (1898-99) aboard the USS Boston, an innovative warship for the period. The adventures and exploits of Gamble Crane, a newly billeted crewmember, is a continuation of "Yankee Tsunami: The Ocean Erupts," which began his adventures in exotic ports. Crane's taboo romance with Emily Chan, a girl of Chinese ancestry from Monterey, California, becomes complicated. Both lovers are American citizens, yet the mixing of the races in 1899 is viewed as scandalous. Crane's love for Emily is precipitated by their adventure that frees two young girls forced into the slavery of prostitution. This event begins Crane's metamorphosis of understanding. Learning of Emily's struggle to gain acceptance in the white community of Monterey begins the conversion of Crane into an advocate for human rights of non-white peoples in each port visited by the Boston. Gamble now empathizes with the struggle of people living on the rim of the Pacific, called "heathens" by whites. With Gamble Crane as our guide, we learn what the world was like as told by the Pacific Rim peoples. We are exposed to the unsettling effects brought to bear by Manifest Destiny, America's governing principle seen by many in the region as racist. From that point, Crane views his encounters from a different perspective. Be it Okumura-san, an important Japanese government official in Nagasaki; Lanakila, the Kahuna Nui of Honolulu; Donaldina Cameron, the avenging angel of Chinatown; Agamemnon Asher, a shipmate who's like a brother; or Montague, a retired shipmate and expert in Asian culture - they all have an indelible impact upon the life of Gamble Crane.
