Book excerpt: In Christianity, as with most religions, attaining holiness and a higher spirituality while simultaneously pursuing worldly ideals such as fame and fortune is nearly impossible. So how do people pursuing careers in Hollywood's entertainment industry maintain their religious devotion without sacrificing their career goals? For some, the answer lies just two miles south of the historic center of Hollywood, California, at the Oasis Christian Center. In Hollywood Faith, Gerardo Marti shows how a multiracial evangelical congregation of 2,000 people accommodates itself to the entertainment industry and draws in many striving to succeed in this harsh and irreverent business. Oasis strategically sanctifies ambition and negotiates social change by promoting a new religious identity as "champion of life"-an identity that provides people who face difficult career choices and failed opportunities a sense of empowerment and endurance. The first book to provide an in-depth look at religion among the "creative class," Hollywood Faith will fascinate those interested in the modern evangelical movement and anyone who wants to understand how religion adapts to social change.

Book excerpt: "After reading these powerful, though deeply-disturbing stories and poems, Southern California will never be the same for me. Wendy Rainey has redefined L.A. Noir and given the grotesque entwined with the lyrical it's own unique place in the California literary canon. I'm full of admiration for the author's gifts, and sense there's a lot more to come!" -Edward Field, American Poetry Icon. Author of After the Fall. Wendy Rainey's Los Angeles is dark and menacing, the gutted insides of a glittering facade. Her poems and stories are written from the POV of those who serve at the whim of others; waitresses, nannies, production guys, personal assistants, clerks, and explore their careless exploitation by the uber-class, those self-obsessed, complacent winners with their entitlements and prying eyes. These are stories of people on the edge. A beleaguered server imagines Denny's diners turning into orangutans and farm animals. A sixteen year old incest survivor gives living another try. An exhausted waitress turns the tables on a panhandler at the bus stop. A guy out for a boat ride with friends decides it is a good day to die. In these stores, expect the unexpected. Always. Rainey writes about the marginalized and disenfranchised without pity, without mercy. Her sharp dialogue, and delicious escapes into surrealistic fantasy soar far above the quotidian world her characters too often find themselves in. This is original, exciting storytelling about a Los Angeles too often unseen. -Alexis Rhone Fancher, author of How I Lost My Virginity To Michael Cohen, and State of Grace: The Joshua Elegies, poetry editor, Cultural Weekly, 4 time Best of the Net, 3 time Pushcart nominee. Marilyn Monroe said Hollywood is the kind of place where they offer you $3000 for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul. She liked to say she always held out for the 50 cents. In Wendy Rainey's collection "Hollywood Church," earnest working-class people - nannies, former prostitutes, truckers and more -- struggle against a glittering glamorous lie to hold onto their souls and find (and maybe keep) a little tenderness. In this collection, we find The Sherwood Forest Inn, where a sign promises all fantasies fulfilled. But here there's no Robin Hood, no justice, and the slogan is "rob from the rich and give to the whore." Throughout this collection, Wendy Rainey shines a light on the fakery and cruelty that hide beneath the Hollywood promise. She shines a light on the underbelly of human nature in stories like "Dinosaur-Killing Asteroid," where a high-powered successful Hollywood executive can't bear her daughter's love. Her solution is to drug her loving, boisterous four-year-old to keep the kid from being a nuisance. In "Chapel on Wheels," a trucker-turned-Hollywood dreamer searches for God in a trailer on Van Ness. In other moments, a statuette of Big Boy becomes a reminder of infidelity and Hollywood Boulevard becomes the Arizona Desert. The Hollywood Wendy Rainey shows us is a grim one, far from the Technicolor dream. "You will see a vacancy there that we have mistaken for greatness," she writes. But that Vacancy sign flickers on and off, promising hope. The nanny stands up to the mother's cruelty. The trucker remembers beauty. And, in a lovely lyric poem, a swarm of Monarch butterflies descends on a freeway overpass. There is tension in this book, a struggle for beauty and hope against the odds. Wendy Rainey writes like a modern-day Jean Rhys. In "Hollywood Church," she shows us something true about ourselves and our world and helps us realize what our souls are truly worth. -Lori Jakiela, author of Belief is its Own Kind.

Movies shattered Hollywood's tranquillity, and brought wealth, fame and glamorous movie stars. The giants of the movie industry invented klieg-lighted movie premieres and the Academy Awards in Hollywood. Go beyond the star-studded surface to the district's days of union busting, gangsters, and scandal, foreshadowing Hollywood's seedy decline. The book concludes with Hollywood's redevelopment that continues today. The book features the famous faces and places that made the town legendary, offering a unique perspective on celebrity nightlife and the behind-the-scenes stories of day-to-day life. Lavishly illustrated with over 800 vintage images from the author's private collection, "The Story of Hollywood" brings new insights to readers with a passion for Hollywood and its place in the history of film, radio, and television.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious Communication Association's Book of the Year Hollywood and Christianity often seem to be at war. Indeed, there is a long list of movies that have attracted religious condemnation, from Gone with the Wind with its notorious "damn," to The Life of Brian and The Last Temptation of Christ. But the reality, writes William Romanowski, has been far more complicated--and remarkable. In Reforming Hollywood, Romanowski, a leading historian of popular culture, explores the long and varied efforts of Protestants to influence the film industry. He shows how a broad spectrum of religious forces have played a role in Hollywood, from Presbyterians and Episcopalians to fundamentalists and evangelicals. Drawing on personal interviews and previously untouched sources, he describes how mainline church leaders lobbied filmmakers to promote the nation's moral health and, perhaps surprisingly, how they have by and large opposed government censorship, preferring instead self-regulation by both the industry and individual conscience. "It is this human choice," noted one Protestant leader, "that is the basis of our religion." Tensions with Catholics, too, have loomed large--many Protestant clergy feared the influence of the Legion of Decency more than Hollywood's corrupting power. Romanowski shows that the rise of the evangelical movement in the 1970s radically altered the picture, in contradictory ways. Even as born-again clergy denounced "Hollywood elites," major studios noted the emergence of a lucrative evangelical market. 20th Century-Fox formed FoxFaith to go after the "Passion dollar," and Disney took on evangelical Philip Anschutz as a partner to bring The Chronicles of Narnia to the big screen. William Romanowski is an award-winning commentator on the intersection of religion and popular culture. Reforming Hollywood is his most revealing, provocative, and groundbreaking work on this vital area of American society.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD AND NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower comes “an utterly necessary story” (The Wall Street Journal) that pulls back the curtain on the church of Scientology: one of the most secretive organizations at work today. • The Basis for the HBO Documentary. Scientology presents itself as a scientific approach to spiritual enlightenment, but its practices have long been shrouded in mystery. Now Lawrence Wright—armed with his investigative talents, years of archival research, and more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologists—uncovers the inner workings of the church. We meet founder L. Ron Hubbard, the highly imaginative but mentally troubled science-fiction writer, and his tough, driven successor, David Miscavige. We go inside their specialized cosmology and language. We learn about the church’s legal attacks on the IRS, its vindictive treatment of critics, and its phenomenal wealth. We see the church court celebrities such as Tom Cruise while consigning its clergy to hard labor under billion-year contracts. Through it all, Wright asks what fundamentally comprises a religion, and if Scientology in fact merits this Constitutionally-protected label.

Book excerpt: What Would You Surrender for God? Christians in the Middle East, in much of Asia, and in Africa are still being martyred for the faith, but how many American Christians are willing to lay down their smartphones, let alone their lives, for the faith? Being a Christian in America doesn’t require much these days. Suburban megachurches are more like entertainment venues than places to worship God. The lives that American “Christians” lead aren’t much different from those of their atheist neighbors, and their knowledge of theology isn’t much better either. Matt Walsh of The Daily Wire exposes the pitiful state of Christianity in America today, lays out the stakes for us, our families, and our eternal salvation, and invites us to a faith that’s a lot less easy and comfortable—but that’s more real and actually worth something. The spiritual junk food we’re stuffing ourselves with is never going to satisfy. As St. Augustine said over a millennium ago, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him. Only God Himself can make our lives anything but ultimately meaningless and empty. And we will never get anywhere near Him if we refuse to take up our cross and follow Jesus. This rousing call to the real adventure of a living faith is a wake-up call to complacent Christians and a rallying cry for anyone dissatisfied with a lukewarm faith.

Book excerpt: From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Hollywood, Florida, showcases more than two hundred of the best postcards available. The postcards within these pages were collected and interpreted by Bonnie Wilpon, a member of the first graduating class of Hollywood Hills High School. The images in this informative volume provide readers with a delightful trip down memory lane, bringing an important period of the area's history to life for visitors and members of the younger generation. Book excerpt: Winner of the Distinguished Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion The Emerging Church Movement (ECM) is a creative, entrepreneurial religious movement that strives to achieve social legitimacy and spiritual vitality by actively disassociating from its roots in conservative, evangelical Christianity and "deconstructing" contemporary expressions of Christianity. Emerging Christians see themselves as overturning outdated interpretations of the Bible, transforming hierarchical religious institutions, and re-orienting Christianity to step outside the walls of church buildings toward working among and serving others in the "real world." Drawing on ethnographic observation of emerging congregations, pub churches, neo-monastic communities, conferences, online networks, in-depth interviews, and congregational surveys in the US, UK, and Ireland, Gerardo Marti and Gladys Ganiel provide a comprehensive social-scientific analysis of the development and significance of the ECM. Emerging Christians, they find, are shaping a distinct religious orientation that encourages individualism, deep relationships with others, new ideas about the nature of truth, doubt, and God, and innovations in preaching, worship, Eucharist, and leadership.

Book excerpt: An innovative approach to the relationship between filmmaking and society during Hollywood's golden age. The 1910s and 1920s witnessed the inception of a particular brand of negotiation between filmdom and its public in the United States. Hollywood, its proponents, and its critics sought to establish new connections between audience and industry, suggesting means by which Hollywood outsiders could become insiders. Hollywood Outsiders looks at how four disparate entities--the Palmer Photoplay correspondence school of screenwriting, juvenile series fiction about youngsters involved in the film industry, film appreciation and character education programs for high school students, and Catholic and Protestant efforts to use and influence filmmaking--conceived of these connections, and thus of the relationship of Hollywood to the individual and society. Anne Morey's exploration of the diverse discourses generated by these different conjunctions leads to a fresh and compelling interpretation of Hollywood's place in American cultural history. In its analysis of how four distinct groups, each addressing constituencies of various ages and degrees of social authority, defined their interest in the film industry, Hollywood Outsiders combines concrete discussions of cultural politics with a broader argument about how outsiders viewed the film industry as a vehicle of self-validation and of democratic ideals.
