Book excerpt: Only Rowan Summerwaite can keep the peace between humans and Vampires in Blade to the Keep, the second novel in the fan-favorite Goddess with a Blade series by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Dane Canny and ferocious, with the power of an ancient Goddess in her belly, Rowan Summerwaite is the only person who can renegotiate the fragile Treaty between the Vampire Nation and the Hunter Corporation, the last line of defense for humanity. A meeting of this Joint Tribunal, as well as her new status as Liaison, sends Rowan straight to the last place on earth she wants to be, the childhood home she’d escaped so many years before—The First’s Keep. Raised at the knee of The First—the oldest Vampire and leader of the Vampire Nation—honed into a weapon by the Hunter Corporation, wielding ancient knowledge from the Goddess within, Rowan must navigate bloodthirsty Vampires and Hunters alike. And she’s got to do it while managing a politically awkward but undeniably deepened romance with Scion Clive Stewart. Failure in her role as Liaison could mean all-out war, with humankind in the crosshairs. No pressure. Walking the path between her two lives has already made Rowan a pariah. The choices she’ll have to make will mean she becomes something even more Other and as a result she may lose those last shreds of home she has left. “Fans of exciting and sexy urban fantasy have hit the jackpot with the Goddess with a Blade series.” —RT Book Reviews See how Rowan’s story began in Goddess with a Blade. When Cole Thornton comes to Mirage—with his own questions about the Brothers—Twinkie's hormones go on high alert. So does her internal alarm. Is this great-looking guy really what he seems? Cole and Twinkie fall in love (or certainly lust!), surrounded by an eccentric cast of characters, from her cohort of girlfriends to her sheriff ex-husband. Book excerpt: Did you know a Witch cannot ride her broom with a broken leg? Well, it’s true. I have one. I should know. Christmas Eve is on the way. I’m the one and only Keeper of the Christmas Star, the Curator of the Crystal Forest, the one Witch in all the world with the ability to give the Christmas Star the special Brown Family whammy-abracadabra-hocus pocus to light the way for Santa’s yearly sojourn… And I have a broken leg that just won’t heal. As if things weren’t bad enough, Edgar, my frumptastic-but-lovable Familiar, a rather cranky one-thousand-three-hundred-and-forty-seven-year-old Christmas Elf, swears I’ve been cursed. Can you imagine? Me? The fantasticness that is Ella Elizabeth Brown cursed? It’s just not possible. But… There have been an inordinate number of spiders lurking about my little cottage in the woods. I have been a little more klutzy than usual. And my daily phone call with my cousin, Molly, was hijacked by the Dragon of my dreams. Could Edgar be right? This a mystery that must be solved. Time to pull out all the stops, whip up all the Magic, and swallow my pride. I need help, and it comes in a great big package with wings and gorgeous golden and red scales. Hold onto your stockings, my friends. This is one Holiday story you don’t want to miss.

Dressed in a typically eccentric, outrageous Christmas outfit, he does his very best to bring joy to the world, despite everyone else being less than enthusiastic with his efforts. It's only as he's starting to lose faith in the whole day that a late visitor arrives - and Tom is reminded of what and who matters in his own heart. This Christmas short story takes place in the series timeline after Tom's Type - Love at the Haven #8, and so it may contain spoilers for the previous titles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unorthodox account of 1960s Black thought rigorously details the field’s debts to German critical theory and explores a forgotten tradition of Black singularity. Phenomenal Blackness examines the changing interdisciplinary investments of key mid-century Black writers and thinkers, including the growing interest in German philosophy and critical theory. Mark Christian Thompson analyzes this shift in intellectual focus across the post-war decades, placing Black Power thought in a philosophical context. Prior to the 1960s, sociologically oriented thinkers such as W. E. B. Du Bois had understood Blackness as a singular set of socio-historical characteristics. In contrast, writers such as Amiri Baraka, James Baldwin, Angela Y. Davis, Eldridge Cleaver, and Malcolm X were drawn to notions of an African essence, an ontology of Black being. With these perspectives, literary language came to be seen as the primary social expression of Blackness. For this new way of thinking, the works of philosophers such as Adorno, Habermas, and Marcuse were a vital resource, allowing for continued cultural-materialist analysis while accommodating the hermeneutical aspects of Black religious thought. Thompson argues that these efforts to reimagine Black singularity led to a phenomenological understanding of Blackness—a “Black aesthetic dimension” wherein aspirational models for Black liberation might emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Day Before It Rained is an eclectic collection of short stories ranging from quirky portraits to tales of LGBTQ+ relationships; plus eccentric takes on friendship, romance, and everything in between. Whether period pieces or modern day works, from the magical to the mundane, from the heart of Kansas to the Yorkshire moors or the Tunisian desert, the stories span the years, travel the globe, and explore the spectrum of emotions. The author’s characters discover love, loss, hope, and fear—in other words, the dubious joy of being human. Book Review 1: “Rich Rubin is a traveler. He’s a wanderer. These stories are like buying coffee at an untried deli on a crisp overcast day in New York City. There’s something small, perfect, private about them. Bundle up and take the walk.” — Playwright/screenwriter Daniel Talbott Book Review 2: “Rubin’s acute powers of observation create vivid scenes populated with indelible characters. I wanted to meet them all.” — Patricia Harris, Boston Globe correspondent and author of New England’s Notable Women Book Review 3: "Witty, charming, engaging, and thought-provoking, The Day Before It Rained is not just a collection of short stories. It is an examination of what it means to be human, and how we can still find joy and connection in the simplest moments of life." — Frank Schierloh, writer and critic, queer-reviewed.com Book Review 4: “Rich Rubin’s mellifluous prose reminds me of a good Islay single malt — smoky and strong and best taken in small sips to savor the complexity.” — David Lyon, co-founder of Lynx House Press and author of The Sound of Horns
