Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, bereits vor dem Eintritt in die Schule identifiziert zu werden, kann als äußerst gering bezeichnet werden. Im vorschulischen Alter werden i.d.R. nur diejenigen Kinder als hochbegabt identifiziert, deren Leistungsvermögen extrem weit über dem Durchschnitt ihrer Alterskameraden liegt. Der zweite Konsens besteht darüber, dass eine frühestmögliche Identifikation der hochbegabten Kinder erstrebenswert ist, um die Erziehung und Förderung an ihren individuellen Fähigkeiten und Bedürfnissen auszurichten. Darüber hinaus haben Kinder einen Anspruch darauf, dass ihre körperliche, geistige und soziale Entwicklung schützend und fördernd begeleitet wird. Das gilt natürlich für jedes Kind, unabhängig von einem retardierten, altersgemäßen oder akzelerierten Entwicklungsverlauf. (...) Aber das Problem bleibt unverändert bestehen: Wie soll eine breite Identifikation der hochbegabten Kinder bereits im vorschulischen Alter gelingen, wenn die Beobachtungen der Eltern nicht in das Verfahren einbezogen werden? Ein Modellprojekt, das in dieser Arbeit mehrfach als Beispiel herangezogen wird, nutzte die Beobachtungen der Eltern als erste Stufe im Identifikationsverfahren. An dem Auswahlverfahren nahmen nur Kinder teil, die von ihren Eltern für das Projekt angemeldet wurden. Zusätzlich wurden die Eltern mit einem Fragebogen (Kap. 5.3) über ihre Beobachtungen befragt. Diese Erkennung der besonderen Begabung durch die Eltern darf allerdings nicht als alleinige Methode zur Identifikation verstanden oder verwendet werden, auch nicht bei eindeutig überdurchschnittlichen Leistungen, sondern immer als ein Teil eines mehrdimensionalen Identifikationsverfahrens. (...) Das Kind demonstriert eine besondere Leistung – aber was passiert auf Seiten des Elternteils? Warum kann oder will es die Leistung nicht als Begabungssignale verstehen? Oder welche Einflüsse wirken sich besonders hilfreich für die erfolgreiche Erkennung aus? Diesen Fragen soll im Erkennungsmodell nachgegangen werden, um einen Eindruck davon zu gewinnen, welche Bedeutung die Eltern bzw. die elterliche Erkennung bei der breiten Identifikation hochbegabter Kinder im vorschulischen Alter einnehmen kann.
