Book excerpt: All that glitters isn't necessarily gold. For the young dentist Brighton Dunn and his wife Gina, that fact could become a mixed blessing. Trying to build his practice and their dream home in a virgin desert development, they and their new neighbors find that life sometimes can be more of a nightmare than a dream. Stalked by a reclusive female hermit and threatened by the greed of unknown intruders, the finding of precious metals beneath the desert floor of their gated community ultimately thrusts these Home Owner's Association members into the limelight of national interest. It is a melting pot of neighbors including: Rhonda Tucker, Hollywood's hottest rockabilly icon; Roy the explorer, friend and protector of everyone; Charley, the ambitious attorney--now torn between friends and firm; Three expatriate families and the master developer of Hidden Canyon, Dean Shutter. This eclectic group attempts to unite in the pursuit of riches beyond their wildest dreams, only to find much more excitement than they ever expected. Bound by the rules and regulations of the neighborhood H.O.A., the tightly-held secret of strange rare metals beneath their feet is too good of a secret to keep to themselves. Should they preserve the environment or live in regal splendor? Can they have the best of both, or will outsiders claim their share? Balancing potential wealth with respect for the beauty and sanctity of the desert pushes the Hidden Canyon residents to the edge of their mental and physical extremes.

Book excerpt: Legends of the Promised Land is the passionate memoir recounting the forced immigration of a Vietnamese family to the U.S., following the Vietnam war and the rise of communism in their homeland. In her own words, traditional aphorism, and the voices of her children and husband, the matriarch of the family describes her family’s inspirational realization of the American dream, beginning with her lone arrival in the U.S. as a penniless boat person. Xuan-Lan Nguyen tells how for six generations her hard-working family amassed wealth that was all lost when the Vietnamese Communists arrived in Saigon in 1975. Her husband, a well-known lawyer in Vietnam and a seventeen-year prisoner of the Vietnamese Communists, eventually joined her, becoming a writer and orator now living with his family in America. She says proudly, “We have three daughters, now three doctors in the medical field in the U.S.”

Book excerpt: MONEY AND KNIFE PART 7 Chapter 173: "Determination" by Can Nhuoc Jin Nhuoc is the disciple she single-handedly taught, only training in demonic power lasting up to three months, plus several times personally modeling and teaching the essence of Thap Tinh Tap's sword techniques, combined with actual combat training, creating excellent teaching results. At first glance, the use of Can Nhuoc's moves against Tap Tinh Tap has been extremely skillful, there is only one small problem, the way of switching between different moves is not coherent enough, sometimes it feels sense of stagnation. This is not a matter of practice, but requires a lot of real combat to hone. Of course, there is another move that Can Nhuoc has not yet discovered... the ultimate technique of Thap Tinh Tap: Breaking Dinh. The basic principles Lam Tuy An had long told Can Nhuoc, but the prerequisite was to have heavenly eyesight like Lam Tuy An, along with the ability to learn and imitate, strength and speed. These things, for ordinary people, are almost impossible to achieve. Lam Tuy An feels that it's okay, with Can Nhuoc's current ability, unless he encounters a first-class expert like Van Trung Nguyet, ordinary gangsters of the second or third class can comfortably fight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction as a vital bridge between technoscience and culture, an early warning system, a method for imagining differently. In the new millennium, science fiction has moved from the margins to the mainstream. At the same time, it has undergone massive transformations. No longer can it be derided as indigestible technobabble or escapist trash or a white man’s playground—not that it ever really was. Sf is rich and diverse, serious, and fun. A vital bridge between technoscience and culture, it is an early warning system, a method for imagining differently, and a way of experiencing our increasingly science-fictional world. It is the vernacular of the 21st century. This Is Not A Science Fiction Textbook brings together leading sf scholars, including some of the most exciting new critical voices, to introduce the genre for the general reader. Its first part outlines some key ideas used to think about sf, such as Estrangement, Extrapolation, and Alterity. Its second part maps some of the genre’s global history, from the Enlightenment and European colonialism to Indigenous and African Futurisms. Its third part surveys sf at the turn of the 2020s, organised by concepts, movements and new academic disciplines, from Afrofuturism and Animal Studies to Queer Theory and the Weird—and each chapter, whether it is on Climate Fiction or Neurodiversity, is accompanied by an introduction to a major contemporary novel and film.

Book excerpt: MONEY AND KNIFE PART 9 Chapter 233: :Divine nature, Hoa Nhat Duong Lam Tuy An saw signs of theft for the first time, to put it bluntly, she absolutely did not know where. There are all kinds of squares, rectangles, triangles, parallel quadrilaterals, wavy lines, junctions, hooks, circles, dots, stars, some drawing circles, some stars, some points, and combinations of different symbols, drawn in very modest places, such as the back door sill. If it weren't for Van Trung Nguyet's guidance, outsiders like them wouldn't have been able to detect it. Lam Tuy An really wanted to ask the meaning of these symbols, but when he saw Van Trung Nguyet trembling with pride and pride, she really didn't bother to open her mouth. Hoa Nhat Duong was probably going through the same intense psychological struggle as her. He glanced at Van Trung Nguyet, the small fan in his hand closed and pulled out continuously, the speed getting faster and faster, rattling, rattling. click, causing Tong district commander to break out in a cold sweat. "Cough, dare to ask Lord Van, what do these symbols and signs mean?" Tong district commander asked. Van Trung Nguyet gritted her teeth, lifted her cloak, squatted down, pointed to the points, lines, and circles under the threshold and said: "It's three o'clock in the morning, there's a lot of people, the back door is loosely guarded, there are no ferocious dogs in the house." ." Song district commander was extremely respectful: "It is indeed a professional term." Hoa Nhat Duong couldn't help but squatted down: "What does this point mean?" Van Trung Nguyet: "This house is the central target." "What about a short line with three horizontal points?" "Represents the time to come." "What about wavy lines?" Van Trung Nguyet was helpless: "Hoa Tu Lang, the proverb says it well, there is a cat's path, a mouse's path is a mouse's path, you should worry about eating the rice bowl of the military officer, don't be delusional about stealing the rice bowl. us thieves."

Book excerpt: 'A glossary of colloquial Anglo-Indian words and phrases, and of kindred terms, etymological, historical, geographical and discursive.' Hobson-Jobson is a unique work of maverick scholarship. Compiled in 1886 by two India enthusiasts, it documents the words and phrases that entered English from Arabic, Persian, Indian, and Chinese sources - and vice versa. Described by Salman Rushdie as 'the legendary dictionary of British India' it shows how words of Indian origin were absorbed into the English language and records not only the vocabulary but the culture of the Raj. Illustrative quotations from a wide range of travel texts, histories, memoirs, and novels create a canon of English writing about India. The definitions frequently slip into anecdote, reminiscence, and digression, and they offer intriguing insights into Victorian attitudes to India and its people and customs. With its delight in language, etymology, and puns, Hobson-Jobson has fascinated generations of writers from Rudyard Kipling to Tom Stoppard and Amitav Ghosh. This selected edition retains the range and idiosyncrasy of the original, and includes fascinating information on the glossary's creation and its significance for the English language. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: This book explores the question “Why is the US Navy in the South China Sea at all?” It traces the history of diplomatic, economic, and military tensions among the People’s Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, outlining the origins of the United States-Vietnam relationship during the immediate post-World War II period, the turmoil of the Vietnam War during which China supported North Vietnam against a US-backed South Vietnam, and the decision of the US government to open relations with China beginning in 1972. It shows how from 1945–1975, the US government used its relations with Vietnam to exert diplomatic, economic, and military pressure on China to open negotiations leading to full recognition and further discusses the surprising action of the US Navy in 1974 to allow the Chinese Navy to take the Paracel Islands by force, thereby denying control over these islands to a united Vietnam, closely allied with the Soviet Union, which was the common enemy of both China and the USA. Overall, the book demonstrates how the presence of the US Navy in the South China Sea is a crucial element in much wider, global US strategy.

Book excerpt: “Beautiful and heartrending” fiction set in Vietnam and America from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Sympathizer (Joyce Carol Oates, The New Yorker) In these powerful stories, written over a period of twenty years and set in both Vietnam and America, Viet Thanh Nguyen paints a vivid portrait of the experiences of people leading lives between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. This incisive collection by the National Book Award finalist and celebrated author of The Committed gives voice to the hopes and expectations of people making life-changing decisions to leave one country for another, and the rifts in identity, loyalties, romantic relationships, and family that accompany relocation. From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her with a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half-sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will, the stories are a captivating testament to the dreams and hardships of migration. “Terrific.” —Chicago Tribune “An important and incisive book.” —The Washington Post “An urgent, wonderful collection.” —NPR

Book excerpt: This book is the second collection of systematic case studies describing national environmental policies in 17 countries in terms of capacity building (see Appen dix). The OECD defines environmental capacity building as "a society's ability to identify and solve environmental problems. " While various institutions, including UNEP, FAO, World Bank and OECD, have hitherto used the terms environmental capacity and capacity building almost exclusively with reference to developing countries, we have extended the concepts to industrialized countries, as well. The first collection, edited by Martin Janicke, Helge Joergens (both Free University Berlin) and Helmut Weidner (Social Science Research Center Berlin), was pub lished in 1997 under the title "National Environmental Policies - A Comparative Study of Capacity-Building" (Berlin, etc. : Springer Verlag). It included 13 studies of countries. As in the first volume, chapter I presents the conceptual framework underlying the national case studies. It is a slightly shorter version of the corresponding chap ter in volume I. The design of all case studies in the two volumes is largely con gruent with this conceptual framework. Although the various sections of the stud ies do not always have identical titles and subtitles, the central elements of the capacity-building approach have been applied in all cases.

Book excerpt: ‘This volume brings together a diversity of international scholars, unified in the theme of expanding scientific knowledge about humanity’s past in the Asia-Pacific region. The contents in total encompass a deep time range, concerning the origins and dispersals of anatomically modern humans, the lifestyles of Pleistocene and early Holocene Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers, the emergence of Neolithic farming communities, and the development of Iron Age societies. These core enduring issues continue to be explored throughout the vast region covered here, accordingly with a richness of results as shown by the authors. Befitting of the grand scope of this volume, the individual contributions articulate perspectives from multiple study areas and lines of evidence. Many of the chapters showcase new primary field data from archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Equally important, other chapters provide updated regional summaries of research in archaeology, linguistics, and human biology from East Asia through to the Western Pacific.’ Mike T. Carson Associate Professor of Archaeology Micronesian Area Research Center University of Guam
