Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses and compares the development paths of five major cities in East and Southeast Asia since the early 1960s, including Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Manila, Seoul, and Shanghai. In examining these five cases through a carefully crafted conceptual framework, the author excavates an understanding of the dynamics that have enabled Seoul and Shanghai to become highly competitive as major engines of economic growth, while simultaneously accounting for why the other three cities have faced numerous problems in terms of meeting their development goals. Presenting both quantitative and qualitative data to trace the course of changes between 1960 and 2015, the case studies curate six possible explanations for the different cities’ developmental trajectories. The book considers the national development strategy matters to the development of cities and positions the share of budget revenue retained for cities’ expenditure as critical. The author demonstrates that consistently pursuing long-term strategies is important, and that public entrepreneurship with powerful supporting coalitions is vital. The book illustrates how master plans have played limited roles in the building of cities, and that fragmented governments are often at the root of the problems facing a city’s development. This book will be highly relevant to researchers in international and Asian urban development.

Book excerpt: Climate change represents an increasing threat to the continued development of the people, preservation of ecosystems, and economic growth of Asia and the Pacific. Mainstreaming climate risk management in all aspects of development is thus key to an effective transition to climate-resilient development pathways. ADB's climate risk management framework aims to reduce risks resulting from climate change to investment projects in Asia and the Pacific. A key step in this framework is the technical and economic valuation of climate-proofing measures. This report describes the conduct of the cost-benefit analysis of climate proofing investment projects. An important message is that the presence of uncertainty about climate change does not invalidate the conduct of the economic analysis of investment projects, nor does it require a new type of economic analysis. However, the presence of uncertainty does require a different type of decision-making process in which technical and economic expertise combine to present decision makers with the best possible information on the economic efficiency of alternative designs of investment projects.

Book excerpt: This publication about the urban agenda in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is timely as the world economy embraces the region with accelerated growth. An important element of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Economic Community, the GMS is expected to catch up with the rest of Asia by 2050. With urbanization levels still averaging about 30%, gross domestic product contributions of towns and cities have moved ahead to 50%–60%. By 2050, when urban areas in the GMS reach 64%–74%, urban gross domestic product will grow to an estimated 70%–80%. The challenge lies in consolidating and deepening development along the existing corridors and improving the environmental conditions to prepare for future green growth developments.

This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Membrane technology with effective removal of microbial contaminants has been applied widely in drinking water treatment (DWT), but its sustainable and efficient application in rural areas still needs practical research. Backflushing and chemical cleaning are well investigated for membrane-based systems. However, these methods are not always followed properly and in full, especially in cases of applications for remote areas in developing countries. Important key challenges in real world applications are how the system would actually sustain with unskilled personnel, with no electric power for backflushing or with no chemical cleaning on the long run. These challenges were addressed within the framework of this dissertation. A dead-end Ultrafiltration (UF) with flat-sheet membranes was configured to a stationary DWT system working with low pressure and simplest maintenance, in combination with a suitable chlorination solution without energy demand. In the literature review of this dissertation, an overview of many up-to-date membrane based systems in different categories of use is given in detail, covering different aspects of technology, service efficiency and economics. Hydraulic performance of membrane-based systems is normally studied in lab-scale in limited periods from hours to days. Thus, highlight of this research is the investigation of a full-scale demonstration plant based on UF flat-sheet membrane with pore size of 40 nm, conducted in the Hydraulic Workshop at the University of Kassel, operated continuously day and night for long-term tests. The long-term examination focused on many aspects, from hydraulic performance including flux, permeability, transmembrane pressure, efficiency of the simple membrane cleaning methods, to biological quality of treated water and also efficiency of chlorination by using a mechanical chlorine dosing device. During long-term examination, the phenomenon of gas generation from the water in the plant was recognized. The influence of this phenomenon on the permeate flow rate was evaluated and solution for this problem by the gas trapping device was investigated in this research. The experimental results from long-term examination of the Pilot Plant at the University of Kassel served for the materialization of the system into life. Two DWT plants were implemented in a rural village in southern Vietnam. It could be proved that the product of this research is realistically an economic relief of the long lasted insufficient supply to the crucial demand for safe water in the rural communities of developing countries.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to quantify the role of the world's major economies in the international division from the perspective of global value chains and clarify the value cycle system between China and developed and developing economies. This book establishes a theoretical paradigm that conforms to the current world economic structure. That is, the world economic structure gradually shifts from a single-cycle model centered on developed countries to a more complex dual-circulation model. Furthermore, based on the analysis of the current world economic situation, it also analyzes the interaction between trade and investment and the synergistic effect of the Corridors under the Belt and Road Initiative. The first part of the book brings a better understanding of mutual relationships between trade and investment under the Belt and Road Initiative and broadens the research fields of relevant studies. Additionally, comprehensive and specific country research is particularly conducted in this book. By analyzing the economic indicators, reviewing social history and social-economic development, covering various countries along the Belt and Road, it provides deep exploration of the fields and approaches of the most potential cooperation under the purpose of "Peace, Development, Cooperation and Win-Win." Therefore, this part draws a broad map of economic and cultures in order to provide a reference and assistance for promoting the Belt and Road Initiative. Fulfilling this vision, this book hopes to deepen the understanding of economic development of each relevant economy to encourage the participation of economies in regional connectivity.
