Book excerpt: Objective: To determine factors associated with adolescent HIV testing and preferences for different testing methods. Methods: Sexually active 13-22 year-olds (N=200) completed a theory-based survey and were offered HIV testing. Those who agreed chose one of three HIV tests. Chi-square and logistic regression were performed to determine factors associated with testing. Results: Half of participants (49.5%) agreed to HIV testing: 51% chose rapid oral, 30% venipuncture, and 19% rapid fingerstick. Male gender (OR 3.52; 95% CI 1.35-9.21), parental completion of high school (OR 2.69; 95% CI 1.15-6.31), intention to test for HIV if offered by clinician (OR 6.78; 95% CI 2.01-22.92), and higher perceived likelihood of current HIV infection (OR 10.0; 95% CI 2.9-33.3) were independently associated with testing. Conclusions: Intention to test if offered by a clinician and perceived likelihood of current HIV infection appear to be important factors in decision to test.

Despite substantial scale up of HIV testing services, HIV testing rates among youth continue to be low. This work investigates different aspects of HIV testing among adolescents and young adults in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. Using data from population based surveys such as the National Survey of Adolescents, Demographic and Health Surveys and the AIDS Indicator Survey, I explore the factors which help to explain HIV testing attitudes and behaviours such as willingness to be tested, reasons for not wanting to be tested, self-reported HIV testing and the public-private divide in HIV testing in two Caribbean Countries. The findings shed light on areas where HIV testing programmes can be strengthened in the regions most affected by HIV and policy implications and areas for future research are discussed.

The chapters begin by giving an overview of adolescent problems, such as homelessness, pregnancy and gender, and explore why these problems are so often overlooked. We then move on to an examination of the facts and fictions associated with adolescent risk, challenging some of the basic current notions underpinning approaches to the subject at the time. Also included are particular focused studies of Australian adolescents’ beliefs about HIV and STDs and also the American adolescents’ perceptions of drug injection. Finally, the volume gives a focused view of those with HIV infection, with a review of findings of the time, neuropsychological and psychological factors. This overview provided some comments on merging issues and future directions. Today it can be read in its historical context.
