Book excerpt: HIV/AIDS has assumed an endemic dimension that everyone's perception is important to tackle the scourge. This led the quest for HIV/AIDS knowledge and risk-related behaviours of the military personnel in Enugu Nigeria. They belong to high risk groups for HIV infection and there was paucity of such study amongst them. HIV/AIDS is a leading health problems in the developing countries Nigeria inclusive; the projections of annual deaths caused by AIDS has increased in Nigeria from less than 50,000 in 1999 to about 170,000 in 2007 and the number of Nigerian children orphaned as a result of parental AIDS deaths is projected to be near 1.2 million in 2007. Many army personnel in this book reported participating in high risk sexual behaviors, which may increase their risk of acquiring and spreading HIV/AIDS despite the overall relatively high knowledge level about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention. This book was written for people around the world for cautiousness about HIV/AIDS; especially the army personnel.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a view on how the military forces should control HIV/AIDS infection. While the focus is Nigeria, the views canvassed apply to the military globally because of similarity in the nature of military forces and HIV/AIDS being a universal phenomenon. I argue that safeguarding the human rights of soldiers is a better way of achieving that goal. I further contend that any military policy on HIV/AIDS that fails to protect the human rights of military personnel would not be effective in controlling HIV/AIDS. With unsafe heterosexual behaviors being the major cause of HIV/AIDS in the military, change in the behaviors of soldiers is an effective means of control. Because the military as a body largely relies on coercion and sanctions to control its personnel, 'tough military measures' may seem the natural means to attain the proper behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, communicable diseases have devastated armies and weakened the capacity of state institutions to perform core security functions. Today, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has prompted many of the affected countries to initiate policies aimed at addressing its impact on their armed forces, police, and prisons. This volume explores the dynamics of how the security sectors of selected African states have responded to the complex and multifaceted challenges of HIV/AIDS. Current and impending African HIV/AIDS policies address a range of security-related issues: * The role of peacekeepers in the spread or control of HIV * The dilemma of public health (the need to control HIV) versus human rights (protection against mandatory medical testing) needs * The gender dimensions of HIV in the armed forces * The impact of HIV on the police and prisons The chapters in HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa are written by African practitioners, including commissioned officers who are currently serving in the armed forces, medical officers and nurses working in the military, and African policy and academic experts. While the book does not comprehensively address all aspects of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the security sector, the contributors nonetheless highlight the potentials and limits of existing policies.
