Download or read book Kaiser Steel, Fontana written by John Charles Anicic Jr and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of the 20th century, Fontana Farms Company operated a hog ranch on the site where Kaiser Company Incorporated later erected one of the nation's largest steel mills. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the United States was forced into an unprecedented escalation in the production of ships, planes, and armaments. Soon the sensational announcement came to San Bernardino County that Fontana, a railroad convergence located a safe distance from possible coastal bombardment, would become home to thousands of sweathogs in the war effort. A "gold rush" of sorts ensued, and all property south of Valencia Street to the railroad was sold in a week. This book pays tribute to the fact that, for two generations, Kaiser Steel Corporation at Fontana was among California's and the nation's industrial giants.

Book Synopsis United States Steel by : Arundel Cotter
Download or read book United States Steel written by Arundel Cotter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 1816-03-19 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in 1914-1915, I wrote "The Authentic History of the United States Steel Corporation," which has been enlarged and brought up to date in the present volume, the Government's suit for the dissolution of the Corporation had not been decided. In fact, the lower court handed down its decision just about the time the book was going to press. It was my good fortune to hear the testimony of the most important of the more than 400 witnesses and argument of counsel in the suit and to supplement the information so gained by conversations with steel men, inside and outside the Corporation, with whom my work brings me in constant contact. And all that I learned convinced me more and more that the big company was not illegal, either technically or morally, and that, in fact, its influence on industry was beneficent. It is naturally a matter of personal gratification that the suit has resulted in the complete vindication of the Corporation.

CHAPTER IX THE CARNEGIE STEEL COMPANY An account of the story of steel, either in the United States or in the world, would be incomplete without reference to the Carnegie Steel Company, of Pittsburg, which has occupied so strategic and dominating a position in the steel industry, and which has been such a maker of steel and of history of steel. Without a clear knowledge of the part that this company has taken in steel and steel strategy, the mainsprings of twentieth-century history remain invisible and mysterious. This company has been foremost in the developments which have been described in a previous chapter as the characteristic factors which have made America a predominant factor in twentieth-century steel manufacturing. During the period when England led the world, the unit of steel making was the individual mill or individual furnace situated in some district with many more like it and equally independent of it. The enterprise was individualistic, and with such conditions the superior natural conditions of England counted, for it was easy for the individual or single smallcompany plant to achieve results. America has forged ahead under the mighty constructions and operations that have been brought about by great companies. In this movement the Carnegie Steel Company has always been a leader. No industry is naturally so uncertain and consequently so competitive as the steel industry. The demand for the product is fitful and uncertain in the extreme because most of it goes into new constructions and new enterprises, and these are notorious for the spurts and depressions of demand which affect them. While the consumption demand for iron and steel rises and falls, the purchasing demand is often more uncertain, because the users wish...
Book Synopsis An Economic History of the American Steel Industry by : Robert P. Rogers
Download or read book An Economic History of the American Steel Industry written by Robert P. Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a basic outline of the history of the American steel industry, a sector of the economy that has been an important part of the industrial system. The book starts with the 1830's, when the American iron and steel industry resembled the traditional iron producing sector that had existed in the old world for centuries, and it ends in 2001. The product of this industry, steel, is an alloy of iron and carbon that has become the most used metal in the world. The very size of the steel industry and its position in the modern economy give it an unusual relevance to the economic, social, and political system.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of American Literature: Volume 4, Nineteenth-Century Poetry 1800-1910 by : Sacvan Bercovitch
Download or read book The Cambridge History of American Literature: Volume 4, Nineteenth-Century Poetry 1800-1910 written by Sacvan Bercovitch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete narrative history of nineteenth-century American poetry. Barbara Packer explores the neoclassical and satiric forms mastered by the early Federalist poets; the creative reaches of once-celebrated, and still compelling, poets like Longfellow and Whittier; the distinctive lyric forms developed by Emerson and the Transcendentalists. Shira Wolosky provides a new perspective on the achievement of female poets of the period, as well as a close appreciation of African-American poets, including the collective folk authors of the Negro spirituals. She also illuminates the major works of the period, from Poe through Melville and Crane, to Whitman and Dickinson. The authors of this volume discuss this extraordinary literary achievement both in formal terms and in its sustained engagement with changing social and cultural conditions. In doing so they recover and elucidate American poetry of the nineteenth century for our twenty-first century pleasure, profit, and renewed study.
