Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Woman's Temperance Crusade There has been no effort at literary excellence; yet many of the thrilling experiences narrated in these pages in simple words, will live in song and story as long as God and Truth are honored among the children of men. The women who walked with God in the fiery furnace of the Crusade have been allowed as far as possible to tell of their work in their own words, and they should be accorded a gracious hearing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crusaders: A Story of the Women's Temperance Movement of 1873-74 Already many who could have given testimony in regard to it have passed from earth; and the gray hair and failing strength Of many others are silent monitors Of the voiceless grave. A nation that prays to God, day after day, to spare the life of its wounded chief magistrate, must believe in an overruling Providence; and a people that so believes must be willing, at least, to take into consideration such religious experiences as may serve to illustrate a call that conforms to Bible teachings. A Christian people can not afford to misinterpret, or to partially understand, or to let fall into forgetfulness, any manifestation of Divine Power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women Torch-Bearers: The Story of the Woman's Christian Temperance UnionIn writing The Story Of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the historian could include only such names and statistics as are needed to make the account graphic and helpful. Principles and facts are emphasized that the oncoming generation may catch the spirit of the marching mothers Of the Crusade and realize the high historic points Of the national and international growth of the Wom an's Christian Temperance Union. One of the outstanding results Of the education, agitation and organization of the vvoman's Chris tian Temperance Union, from Crusade to Jubilee days, is the steady growth of public opinion in support Of the fundamental principles of total abstinence for the individual and prohibition for the state and nation. Hence, it is essential to the history of the W. C. T. U. That high authorities in science, social economy, the church and the govern ment should be cited. This is as joyous a feature Of the story Of fifty years as is the victorious culmination in the writing of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Amendments.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Willard founded the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1884 to carry the message of women's emancipation throughout the world. Based in the United States, the WCTU rapidly became an international organization, with affiliates in forty-two countries. Ian Tyrrell tells the extraordinary story of how a handful of women sought to change the mores of the world -- not only by abolishing alcohol but also by promoting peace and attacking prostitution, poverty, and male control of democratic political structures. In describing the work of Mary Leavitt, Jessie Ackermann, and other temperance crusaders on the international scene, Tyrrell identifies the tensions generated by conflict between the WCTU's universalist agenda and its own version of an ideologically and religiously based form of cultural imperialism. The union embraced an international and occasionally ecumenical vision that included a critique of Western materialism and imperialism. But, at the same time, its mission inevitably promoted Anglo-American cultural practices and Protestant evangelical beliefs deemed morally superior by the WCTU. Tyrrell also considers, from a comparative perspective, the peculiar links between feminism, social reform, and evangelical religion in Anglo-American culture that made it so difficult for the WCTU to export its vision of a woman-centered mission to other cultures. Even in other Western states, forging links between feminism and religiously based temperance reform was made virtually impossible by religious, class, and cultural barriers. Thus, the WCTU ultimately failed in its efforts to achieve a sober and pure world, although its members significantly shaped the values of those countries in which it excercised strong influence. As and urgently needed history of the first largescale worldwide women's organization and non-denominational evangelical institution, Woman's World / Woman's Empire will be a valuable resource to scholars in the fields of women's studies, religion, history, and alcohol and temperance studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Temperance Reform in Massachusetts, 1813-1883 From boyhood we have been interested in the temperance movement, and have also been connected with different organizations of temperance workers. As the history of this reform has been closelv identified with the history of the State, for three-fourths of a cen tury, we have sought to rescue from oblivion a record of the noble work that has been done by the earnest men and women, who have enlisted in this holy war against the gigantic crime of crimes, the liquor traffic. For some years, in the relaxation from other duties we have gathered the materials here brought together. We have culled from a wide field, including the written or printed records-and reports of the principal societies, the statements of prominent members, and the files of temperance and other papers. We have not referred to all our sources of information, because it would too much encumber the pages with notes. We have endeavored to be accurate in our statements. Yet we cannot vouch for their reliability in all cases, especially of names, as many of them have been taken from news papers.. Where we have had no trustworthy records.
