Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are found everywhere, doing all kinds of things. They are critical elements in the economies of a large number of countries around the world, large and small. Their affairs are carried out by elected leadership that runs the gamut from the illiterate to the scholarly. Their membership is made up of people of all socio-economic backgrounds. It is those members who, through their support and their needs, determine the successes and failures of cooperatives. But cooperatives as a popular movement will also be judged in other ways. A judgment will be made on the totality of their impact: local, national, and international. People will ask about how they helped ameliorate the economic and social problems of the dispossessed. But they will also inquire about their influence on economic systems, whether these were made more humane, egalitarian, and inclusive in their benefits because of cooperative principles and practices. Their impact on the international order will be judged collectively by how they contributed more than resolutions to peace, to justice, and to human inclusiveness. This volume provides snapshot views of the cooperative movement in all its diversity. The only single source one can consult to find so much information on the different kinds of cooperatives, significant figures, including philosophers, pioneers, officials, and leaders, and the situation in a large number of countries. With a list of acronyms, an extensive chronology, appendixes, and a comprehensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish history is undergoing a renaissance. Everyone agrees that an understanding of our nation's history is integral to our experience of its present and the shaping of the future. But the story of Scotland's past is being told with little reference to gendered identities. Not only are women largely missing from these grand narratives, but men's experience has tended to be sublimated in intellectual, political and economic agendas. Neither femininities nor masculinities have been given much of a place in Scotland's past or in the process of nation-making. Gender in Scottish History offers a new perspective on Scotland's past since around 1700, viewing some of the main themes with a gendered perspective. It starts from the assumption that gender is integral to our understanding of the ways in which societies in the past were organised and that national histories have a tendency to be gender blind. Each chapter engages with one key theme from Scottish historiography, asking what happens when women are added to the story and how the story changes when the meanings of gendered understandings and assumptions are probed. Addressing politics, culture, religion, science, education, work, the family and identity, Gender in Scottish History proposes an alternative reading of the Scottish past which is both inclusive and recognisable.

Madame Teecb (President of the Amsterdam Branch of the Dutch Guild). Attached to the Scottish Guild are nine Irish branches, which will, we hope, send some representatives this year to our Guild Congress. None who were present at the Co-operative Congress at Liverpool, in 1899, will forget the ovation given by the delegates to Madame Treub, who 116 Kindbed Guilds And Fobeign Intebcoubse. accompanied her husband, Professor Treub, one of the Dutch representatives from Amsterdam. Madame Treub spoke English, among many other languages, fluently. She threw herself with enthusiasm into learning every detail about the work and organisation of the English Guild, so as to be prepared to start a sister Guild in Holland. This she has done with marked success. Miss Mayo, who was paying a visit to Amsterdam, gave an account in the "Woman's Corner" of the second meeting, which was held in November, 1900. She wrote: -- "The little room first used at 'Ons Huis' was already too small for the number who wished to come, and as no other suitable place could be found, the Guild met in two detachments on two consecutive nights at Madame Treub's house, some thirty people coming in all. Two of the first 'jevrows' (women) to appear wore the national head-dress--a gold helmet, covered with lace, looped up over the forehead with gold buttons and long pendants. The others were dressed just as Guild members would be in England, and until they spoke might all...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of working women in Scotland in the late 1900s, this book uncovers the patterns of employment, involvement in and relationship to trade unions, and the forms of workplace resistance and struggles in which these women engaged. Focusing particularly on women working in Dundee's jute industry, Gordon integrates labor and gender history, which challenges many assumptions about the organizational apathy of women workers and the inevitable division between workplace and domestic ideologies. This book makes an important contribution to current historiographical debate over the sexual division of labor, working-class consciousness, domestic ideologies, and to the history of women in Scotland.
