Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 4 George I. Senet, Esq. Mr Dear Sir: In committing to the press this concluding volume of the "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church," I would gratefully acknowledge my obligations to you. If I have succeeded, to any satisfactory degree, in my task, it has been largely owing to the reliefs which your kind attentions have afforded me from cares and anxieties, that would have seriously interfered with it. Your honored father appears briefly in my narrative; tho first collegiately-educated native preacher of his Church, except Fisk, and a man of most sterling talents and character, the friend and co laborer of Bangs, Emory, Soule, Ostrander, Rice, and the other strong men of tho second generation of American Methodist preachers, ho will be 0110 of the most interesting subjects of the later history of his denomination. The Church is happy to recognize in you the worthy son of so worthy a father. It finds, in this its third generation, the descendants of its early and heroic itinerants not only thronging its ministry, but founding, on enduring financial bases, its educational and other great institutions. In my former work (the "History of the Religious Movement of the Eighteenth Century, called Methodism," etc.) I brought the narrative down to 1839, the Centenary of British Methodism, and designed to conclude the present work at the same period. There was no important reason, however, for the latter purpose, as American Methodism has its own distinct centenary. But it would be us inexpedient to extend the record to the latter duto as to limit it to the former, our recent controversies cannot yet be satisfactorily narrated; the chief actors in some of them are still living, the families of many of the actors in the earlier ones still survive. There is also a hopeful tendency of reunion among our denominational parties which should not be disturbed by a return, however guarded, to their old disputes. Not till years hence can the historian safely review these unfortunate events. I have had a twofold design in this narrative: first, to show the real development of Methodism on this continent, its interior life, and its junction conditions; for in these two must find the best lessons of its history for all time. Secondly, to keep within such chronological limits os should not require an inconvenient number of volumes, and yet should allow of a substantially complete history of tho Church, of its inception, its organization, its chief personal agents, its theological and disciplinary systems, and finally those adjuncts of its practical system - publishing, Educational, Sunday-School, and Missionary institutions - which have, for the present at least, rounded, if not perfected its scheme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 3 Thomas L. Rushmore, Esq. My Dear Sir: I submit to you the third installment of my narrative of the History of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The name of your family appears honorably in its pages, connected with one of its most interesting episodes, the introduction of Methodism into Canada. Many of its subjects have been meditated under the summer shelter of your trees, and its labor has been relieved by neighborly attentions which will ever associate the memory of your family with my task. In the two preceding volumes I have recorded the planting of the Church, and sufficiently denned its theological and ecclesiastical systems; in the present the story proceeds directly along its chronological line, suspended somewhat abruptly for the convenient size of the volume, but continued, with no further interruption, in the next, which is now passing through the press. Some important questions and topics, requiring more classified treatment, I have reserved for distinct chapters in the fourth volume, though they receive passing notice at their proper dates in the narrative. Many difficulties, some insuperable ones, have beset my labors. While we have abundant and well-verified documents for particular sections of the Church, for others, not less important, we have hardly any. Of some early preachers we have more or less ample biographies; of others, and of not a few who were chieftains of the cause, we have but scattered notices, incapable of being wrought into satisfactory sketches. I have done the best I could, perhaps all that any pen can now or ever do, to present these cases in their proper historical positions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Methodist Episcopal Church History: Showing the Evolution of Methodism in the United States of America, for the Use of Students and General Readers This book does not profess to be an exhaustive history of the Methodist Episcopal Church, much less of Methodism. It is a Manual of Methodist Episcopal Church History in America in a continuous story from 1766 to the close of 1892, a. Period of one hundred and twenty-six years. It aims to give, as far as possible, the leading facts in the history of the Church in chronological order. And in such a manner as will enable the student to readily see the relation existing between those facts. The secessions from the Church, with the causes producing and the events leading to them, have been clearly stated. That most difficult of all periods in the history of American Methodism the period of the great disruption of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the formation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, with the suits that followed - has been treated in as del icate a manner as possible to be true to history and consistent with the facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Year 1793 to the Year 1816 We have hitherto traced the progress of Methodism in this country, from its small beginning in 1766 to the close of the first General Conference in 1792. Though it had difficulties, both internal and external, to contend with, it won its way through every opposition, maintaining the purity of its character, and exerting its hallowing influence on society, in the meantime molding itself into a more compact form and firmer consistency, until we have seen its organization in one supreme judicatory to which its destinies, under God, were committed. I shall now proceed to narrate, as accurately as possible, its subsequent progress, both in its general councils and in its various ramifications over this extended continent.
