Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kings and Queens of England: With Other Poems I must claim the indulgence of my friends for the many defects they will find in my poems, which they will please wink at, remembering that I was sixty years old when I commenced rhyming; and this by way of experiment, while on a visit to my daughter, in Brooklyn. My first essay, was The Monarchs of England. I took it up for my amusement, wishing to ascertain how much of that history I could recollect without help from any other source than memory. The rhyme is in many places far from smooth, and there are many redundances that might with advantage be lopped off; and were it to come under the critic's eye to be reviewed, I should feel it quite necessary to improve it, (the poetry, I mean.) But as it would require quite too much exertion for my eyes in their present state, and as the history, dates, &c., I believe, are correct, I send it to the press "with all its imperfections on its head." Book Synopsis Reading Monarch's Writing by : Peter C. Herman
Download or read book Reading Monarch's Writing written by Peter C. Herman and published by Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS). This book was released on 2002 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the first book to examine the verse produced by Tudor and Stuart monarchs, eight Renaissance scholars demonstrate how monarchs used verse to reflect on their monarchic status and to assert royal policy. As almost all of the poetry of these regal authors is inaccessible, the volume includes a selection of their verse in modernized and newly edited texts, offering an ideal study volume for specialists and the classroom. The contributors examine the nexus of poetry and power from an unconventional New Historicist perspective: from that of the person in power who writes poetry rather than that of the suitor of power. Their approaches to the subject are interdisciplinary, combining literary studies, women's studies, history, the history of sexuality, and manuscript studies." --
Download or read book Kings & Queens written by Ronald Pearsall and published by Todtri Productions. This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 100 illustrations. The story of the kings and queens of England is long and fascinating. It begins with the early monarchs who were little more than tribal warlords, and moves down through the centuries to the present day and the court of Queen Elizabeth II. It is a story of treachery, lust, persecution, and faltering but unremitting progress, sometimes despite the monarchs themselves rather than because of them. This beautifully illustrated and informative volume contains over 100 full-color historical reproductions.
Download or read book Henry VI written by David Grummitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new assessment of Henry VI, David Grummitt synthesizes a wealth of detailed research into Lancastrian England that has taken place throughout the last three decades to provide a fresh appraisal of the house’s last King. The biography places Henry in the context of Lancastrian political culture and considers how his reign was shaped by the times in which he lived. Henry VI is one of the most controversial of England’s medieval kings. Coming to the throne in 1422 at the age of only nine months and inheriting the crowns of both England and France, he reigned for 39 years before losing his position to the Yorkist king, Edward IV, in the early stages of the Wars of the Roses. Almost a decade later, in 1470, he briefly regained the throne, only for his cause to be decisively defeated in battle the following year, after which Henry himself was almost certainly murdered. Henry continues to perplex and fascinate the modern reader, who struggles to understand how such an obviously ill-suited king could continue to reign for nearly forty years and command such loyalty, even after his cause was lost. From his coronation at nine months old, to the legacy of his reign in the centuries after his death, this is a balanced, detailed and engaging biography of one of England’s most enigmatic kings and will be essential reading for all students of late medieval England, and the Wars of the Roses.
