Excerpt: ... ministering at a divinely simple altar, beneath the stately forest trees, the results of their labors are now found all over Missouri and the Southern States, in the earnest, honest, sterling piety of men whose thoughts they turned towards heaven amid the smoke and carnage of carnal conflict. CHAPTER III. THE BEGINNING IN MISSOURI CAMP JACKSON, MAY 10, l86l STERLING PRICE. . /HE politics of Missouri had always been strongly I Southern. As early as 1848-9, when the North was evidently intent upon excluding the South from the territory obtained in the Mexican war -- acquired principally by the blood of Southern soldiers -- the Legislature of Missouri passed resolutions affirming the rights of the States, as interpreted by Calhoun, and pledging Missouri to "co-operate with her sister States in any measure they might adopt" against Northern encroachments. On account of his opposition to these resolutions Mr. Benton was defeated for the United States Senate; and they remained on the statute-book of Missouri unrepealed at the commencement of the war. In the last Presidential campaign, Missouri, under one of those apparent contradictions or delusions not uncommon in American politics, had given her vote for Douglas. This result was obtained chiefly through the influence of Sterling Price, who had formerly been Governor of the State, had previously represented her in Congress, and was a man of commanding influence. Price and his party were firmly attached to the Union and hoped that it'might be perpetuated with safety and honor to the South. Of the Convention called in January, 1861, not a single member was yet ready to avow the policy of secession; and Price himself, who had been returned as a Union man without opposition, was elected its...

This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the origins and history of Missouri Confederate units that served during the Civil War is nearly as difficult as comprehending the diverse politics that produced them. Deeply torn by the issues that caused the conflict, some Missourians chose sides enthusiastically, others reluctantly, while a number had to choose out of sheer necessity, for fence straddling held no sway in the state after the fighting began. The several thousand that sided with the Confederacy formed a variety of military organizations, some earning reputations for hard fighting exceeded by few other states, North or South. Unfortunately, the records of Missouri's Confederate units have not been adequately preserved—officially or otherwise—until now. James E. McGhee is a highly respected and widely published authority on the Civil War in Missouri; the scope of this book is startling, the depth of detail gratifying, its reliability undeniable, and the unit narratives highly readable. McGhee presents accounts of the sixty-nine artillery, cavalry, and infantry units in the state, as well as their precedent units and those that failed to complete their organization. Relying heavily on primary sources, such as rosters, official reports, order books, letters, diaries, and memoirs, he weaves diverse materials into concise narratives of each of Missouri's Confederate organizations. He lists the field-grade officers for battalions and regiments, companies and company commanders, and places of origin for each company when known. In addition to listing all the commanding officers in each unit, he includes a bibliography germane to the unit, while a supplemental bibliography provides the other sources used in preparing this unique and comprehensive resource.

Book excerpt: The South's Finest chronicles one of the best remaining untold stories of the Civil War. The First Missouri Confederate Brigade earned the most distinguished record of any comparable unit. Yet, earlier historians have ignored its accomplishments during some of the most strategically important engagements of the war. Significantly, they had major roles from their first battle at Pea Ridge in early 1862 to their last at Fort Blakely in April 1865.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work spanning twelve extensive volumes is the result of contributions by many Southern men to the literature of the United States that treats of the eventful years in which occurred the momentous struggle called by Mr. A. H. Stephens "the war between the States." These contributions were made on a well-considered plan, to be wrought out by able writers of unquestionable Confederate record who were thoroughly united in general sentiment and whose generous labors upon separate topics would, when combined, constitute a library of Confederate military history and biography. According to the great principle in the government of the United States that one may result from and be composed of many — the doctrine of E pluribus unum--it was considered that intelligent men from all parts of the South would so write upon the subjects committed to them as to produce a harmonious work which would truly portray the times and issues of the Confederacy and by illustration in various forms describe the soldiery which fought its battles. Upon this plan two volumes — the first and the last-comprise such subjects as the justification of the Southern States in seceding from the Union and the honorable conduct of the war by the Confederate States government; the history of the actions and concessions of the South in the formation of the Union and its policy in securing the existing magnificent territorial dominion of the United States; the civil history of the Confederate States, supplemented with sketches of the President, Vice-President, cabinet officers and other officials of the government; Confederate naval history; the morale of the armies; the South since the war, and a connected outline of events from the beginning of the struggle to its close. The two volumes containing these general subjects are sustained by the other volumes of Confederate military history of the States of the South involved in the war. Each State being treated in separate history permits of details concerning its peculiar story, its own devotion, its heroes and its battlefields. The authors of the State histories, like those of the volumes of general topics, are men of unchallenged devotion to the Confederate cause and of recognized fitness to perform the task assigned them. It is just to say that this work has been done in hours taken from busy professional life, and it should be further commemorated that devotion to the South and its heroic memories has been their chief incentive. This is volume eleven out of twelve, covering the Civil War in Missouri.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Historical and Personal: Including the Campaigns of the First Missouri Confederate Brigade The counsels and conduct of faction, even in a civilized state, may sometimes be marked by malignity and ferocity as Vindio tive and relentless, as the spirit with which barbaric chiefs have trampled upon and desolated conquered nations and empires. If, in a land that ought to be great as well as free, such counsels and conduct are proposed, will they not be indignantly spurned by a people whose magnanimity is invoked by their destinies, and by glory and honor? The great controversy of State rights at issue during the struggle it is not proposed to treat as a practical question 3 that must abide the arbitrament of arms; nor am I about to write altogether history, properly so called. My desire is to sketch some memoirs and record some events, whose character Will be at once historical and personal. Their military connection will include the campaigns of the First Missouri (confederate) brigade, of which, I am proud to say, I was a member. These troops were those that followed the fortunes of our gallant old hero, General Sterling Price, to the east side of the Mississippi, and served on that side to the close of the war. The narrative will be faithful to truth; at least, if there be errors, they will not be from intention. My motive in writing is partly to illustrate the life of the soldier. The military memoirs and histories of the day appear to be devoted exclusively to the lives, characters and exploits of distinguished chiefs, and the most important events connected with their career, or calculated to embellish general history. I wish to introduce the reader into the tents and around the camp-fires of the common soldier - to scenes with which I was long familiar; while at the same time we will go with him in the ranks, upon those fields made memorable and glorious by his courage and devotion. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.
