Book Synopsis Alexandria Police Department by : Alexandria Police Association
Download or read book Alexandria Police Department written by Alexandria Police Association and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After constables and night watchmen had protected Alexandria, Virginia, for nearly 100 years, the Alexandria Police Department was officially organized on July 15, 1870. When the city authorized a formal police department, the board of police elected a captain, a lieutenant, and 19 patrolmen. All officers were issued star-shaped tin badges, but they had to supply their own uniforms and guns. This first published history of the Alexandria Police Department follows the growth of the force from the days of foot patrols, when drunks and thieves menaced the seaport town, to 20th-century law enforcement pioneers who once used watches to catch speeders and trained a canine to respond to radio commands. Images recall Alexandria's downtown before it became Old Town and capture the city's expansion to Del Ray and the West End. The officers themselves are highlighted as they caught criminals, investigated traffic accidents, reached out to children in the community, and, in some cases, sacrificed their own lives while protecting the people of Alexandria.
Book Synopsis Participation, Community, and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb by : Patricia Farrell Donahue
Download or read book Participation, Community, and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb written by Patricia Farrell Donahue and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation, Community, and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb: Of Our Own Making challenges the conventional wisdom about participation in modern American communities through the story of Pimmit Hills, Virginia—one of the first federally-financed subdivisions built for World War II veterans. Its story will be familiar to the millions of baby boomers who grew up in middle-class suburbs. This book argues that every community is the sum of all of the different types of participation—positive, negative, formal, informal, direct, and indirect—and not just the few participation activities that social surveys have tracked over the past few decades, such as voting or attending religious services. At the same time, Pimmit Hills’s story is unique. Its proximity to Washington, D.C., meant its residents had front-row seats to—and sometimes supporting roles in—the creation of policies that continue to shape the America we live in today, such as childhood vaccinations, discrimination, and information technology.
Download or read book Groveton written by Charlotte Brown and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groveton is located in Fairfax County, three miles south of Alexandria on what is now known as Richmond Highway. The original property owners of the Groveton area were George Mason, Sampson Darrell, and George Washington. Early family homes that are still standing include Huntley, Stone Mansion, Wilkinson, Sherwood Farm, and Briery Farm. Between the 1880s and early 1900s, Groveton was home to several orchards and farms. Dairy farms, such as Clifton, Groveton, Sherwood, and Hybla Valley Farms, made up the Alexandria Milk Association for which Groveton was known. By the mid-1900s, the farms gave way to businesses, churches, residential housing, and two airfields. Today, Groveton has grown to become a diverse neighborhood and is experiencing economic growth due to the Fort Belvoir expansion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arlington County was carved from a section of the District of Columbia and formally named by the Virginia General Assembly in 1920. The rural farming community across the Potomac River was home to vacationing District of Columbia elite as well as rumrunners and brothels. Law enforcement fell to the commonwealth attorneys, sheriffs, special officers, and citizen leagues. The county board adopted a proposal, and the Arlington County Police Department was founded on February 1, 1940. This photographic history covers law enforcement from the early days of rumrunners to the present day, showing the changes in uniforms, equipment, methods of policing, and the department’s response to the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon. Officers are shown training for the line of duty, investigating crimes, serving in specialized units, and promoting public safety. The officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community are honored here.
