Book excerpt: When young Margaret L. Smitherman receives a journal as a gift from her husband, she uses it to reflect on her future, not yet knowing what she wants to do with her life. Her writings find a purpose at a family gathering when she realizes that the men discuss war and politics while the women serve refreshments and share recipes. Suddenly, Margaret's years at school take on new meaning. In 1847, Margaret graduated from Oberlin College, a progressive school that allows women and people of color to attend at a time when few other schools do. Throughout her life, she continues to be profoundly influenced by the school, encouraged by her parents' support of education and intellectual pursuits. But more importantly, her mother and father teach her to think independently. In 1848, Margaret travels to Seneca Falls, New York, for the first women's rights convention. She reunites with old college friends who are now advocating for abolition, temperance, and women's rights. She returns home invigorated, prepared to participate in the fight to advance the rights of women. Author Mary Carol Farber spins a compelling tale of history, the strength and courage of women, and the undaunted tenacity of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: From an early age, Brice H. Goldsborough exhibited an unending curiosity about the world around him; he was interested in almost anything mechanical, was inquisitive about weather patterns, and yearned to know more about aerodynamics. This lifelong quest for information led him to found Pioneer Instrument Company in New York in 1919, a firm that eventually became one of the worlds largest producers of reliable aviation instruments. In this biography, author Robert Dye, Goldsboroughs great-nephew, tells the story of a man who became an expert in meteorology, navigation, and aircraft instrument design and changed the course of aviation history. Based on personal letters, articles, and news clippings, A Pioneer in Aviation follows Goldsboroughs life as a teen, his time in the navy studying electricity, and his accomplishments, such as establishing Chinas first offshore radio station and supervising the construction of Haitis first radio station. Detailing one of aviations unsung heroes, A Pioneer in Aviation shows the man who designed, built, and installed the instrument panel for The Spirit of St. Louis and flew with Charles Lindbergh during September 1927 and how he came to be associated with other great names in aviation history such as Glenn Curtiss, Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, and Igor Sikorsky.

Book excerpt: Martin Hammack, a farmer, a wagon train master, and Indian scout, from Lincoln County Missouri was seeking new adventure after hearing of the virgin lands and opportunity that California offered, from his son who had gone there during the gold rush of 1849. After the son returned home to Missouri in 1853, his father and the other family members decided all the family of seven, along with 18 other members would make up a 13 wagon train and return to California. Little did the family know of the adventure that would forever change their lives. They were seeking opportunity, new land, a promising furture, plus a new life in a fawaway place. Not only did they endure the hardships of wagon train travel, the harsh elements of the weather, desert heat, and mountains, but they also faced an unknown journey through lands of the Plains Indians which were sometimes hostile. For this, they hoped to receive the rich rewards of a new home and a better life. This is an account of their sussceesul six-month journey to Lake County, California, arriving in the winter of 1853, spending the winter in a Gold Mining camp then going to their final destination in the spring, arriving at their final destination in April 1854, one year from the date they left Missouri.

Book excerpt: "Lost in the District, Lost in the Federal Territory" relates the facts about Doctor David Ross of Bladensburg, his family life, his business and political connections, and his efforts to develop a productive iron mine along the upper Potomac River on lower Antietam Creek in Washington County, Maryland. Through his diligence and the skills of his close relatives, Dr. Ross was in a position to recommend the taking up of arms against Great Britain to his river neighbors of the Committee of Correspondence. His son was later appointed to serve briefly as one of the first auditors for the newly formed District of Columbia. His nephew by marriage, James Maccubbin Lingan, a victim of the Baltimore Riot of July 28, 1812, was one of the first group of leaders who set Georgetown, Maryland (and later D.C.), on its course to greatness as a deep water port. He remains the only veteran of the American Revolutionary War to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Book excerpt: Brothers Henry Enoch and Enoch Enoch came to Virginia before 1750, settling on the sparsely populated frontier west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their Virginia years were defined by the French and Indian War (1755-1763) and their close association with young George Washington. By 1757, their children had begun to explore more westerly lands, where they ultimately resettled with their families in what is now Washington County, Pennsylvania. Henry Jr., David, and Enoch Enoch were among the first "over the mountain men," settling west of the Allegheny Mountains by 1767. Their Pennsylvania years were defined by the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the Indian Wars (1786-1795). By the turn of the century, the Enochs began looking west again, this time to the more promising lands of Ohio.
