Excerpt: ...killed, and the kingdom passed to the Lancaster family, in the person of the Duke of Richmond, who was crowned on the field of battle and hailed as King Henry VH. by Sir William Stanley, the brother of Thomas, Earl of Derby. There seems to be little doubt that Sir Thomas Pylkington took part in this struggle on the side of Richard, as he was attainted by Henry, who granted his estates to the before-mentioned Earl of Derby. The right of the presentation of the church became in this manner the property of the Derby family, and has ever since been retained by them. At the period of the Great Rebellion, when the Puritan party, as they obtained power, showed the one-sidedness of their views about religious liberty, by ejecting from their livings all those clergymen who, being duly ordained by the bishops of the Church, remained faithful to their ordination vows, and, notwithstanding threats of fines and imprisonment, continued to use the Book of Common Prayer. Among these was the Rev. Peter Travis, B.D., Factor of Bury. By an order of Parliament, bearing the date of April 24, 1645, he was " sequestered as a delinquent and disaffected to the Parliament." The rectory of Bury was sequestered from him, as well as that of Halsall, which'he seems to have held in conjunction with, and likewise his own private estate. In his place were appointed to officiate two Puritans, William Alt and Andrew Latham; and on the death of Latham, Tobias Turner succeeded him. Although these men received the income of the living they did not allow one penny to Mrs. Travis and her six children, who were consequently reduced to great poverty. During this period banns of marriage were published from the Market Cross by two of the magistrates of the district. At the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the creation of Britain's national game has often been told. According to the accepted wisdom, the refined football games created by English public schools in the 1860s subsequently became the sports of the masses. Football, The First Hundred Years, provides a revisionist history of the game, challenging previously widely-accepted beliefs. Harvey argues that established football history does not correspond with the facts. Football, as played by the 'masses' prior to the adoption of the public school codes is almost always portrayed as wild and barbaric. This view may require considerable modification in the light of Harvey's research. Football's First One Hundred Years provides a very detailed picture of the football played outside the confines of the public schools, revealing a culture that was every bit as sophisticated and influential as that found within their prestigious walls. Football, The First Hundred Years sets forth a completely revisionist thesis, offering a different perspective on almost every aspect of the established history of the formative years of the game. The book will be of great interest to sports historians and football enthusiasts alike.

Book excerpt: Consumption is well established as a key theme in the study of the eighteenth century. Spaces of Consumption brings a new dimension to this subject by looking at it spatially. Taking English towns as its scene, this inspiring study focuses on moments of consumption – selecting and purchasing goods, attending plays, promenading – and explores the ways in which these were related together through the spaces of the town: the shop, the theatre and the street. Using this fresh form of analysis, it has much to say about sociability, politeness and respectability in the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1960, The History of the Borough of High Wycombe presents the history of an English community, which in the space of some seven hundred years, grew up, flourished and declined and eventually superseded. Even by the standards of the Middle Ages Wycombe was a small town and remained so until very recently. At the beginning of the 19th century, after a hundred years of steady growth, it still contained only about 450 houses. Yet, though small, it was for centuries the only independent borough in Buckinghamshire. John Hampden was closely associated with Wycombe. The Earl of Shelburne, who negotiated peace with the American colonies, was an alderman of the borough. Here Disraeli made his first attempts to enter parliament and lived for many years nearby, at Bradenham and Hughenden. The history of Wycombe is the story of a small, but vigorous and independent community, as rich in character as any biography of an English eccentric. This is an interesting read for scholars of British history.
