Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Board of Trade of the City of Chicago, Vol. 1 of 3 The early struggles and slow growth of the Board after its organization in 1848, have been well described by Elias Colbert and others; but most of the material used in preparing this history of the thirteen years preceding the Civil War was obtained from the newspapers of the period, the only original source now available. Even in its youth, the Board of Trade had the courage of its convictions, and was ready to express its opinion upon public questions. All walks of life, all social grades and nearly all nation alities are represented in its membership. It is not composed of saints exclusively, nor of sinners. Every candidate for member ship must undergo the examination of a committee, and satisfy them not only of his financial responsibility, but of his good business reputation. As a result of care in guarding its portals, and strict enforcement of its stringent rules of business conduct, there is on the Board of Trade of the City of Chicago as high a standard of commercial honor as obtains anywhere on earth. Its history, so far as domestic legislation is concerned, is largely a record of per sistent action by the majority, to compel a turbulent minority to observe open-handed, fair-dealing methods of business in their relations with the public, as well as among fellow members of the Association. The epoch-making requirements for the grading, weighing, storage and shipment of grain in bulk, which were adopted early in the Board's history, and contributed so largely to its supremacy in this department of commerce, were prompted by this motive, and the same is true of the long fight to compel rail way companies to discontinue the practice of granting unfair freight rates to certain favored shippers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Board of Trade of the City of Chicago, Vol. 3 of 3: Illustrated Frank C. Abbey. - The vigorous and progressive little city of Monmouth, Warren county, Illinois, claims Mr. Abbey as one of its business men and as one of the influential exponents of the com mission trade in grain, provisions, cotton and stocks in central Illi nois, his membership in the Board of Trade of the City of Chicago dating from April 15, 1914. His initial experience in connection with the practical afiairs of life was gained through the assistance which he early began to give in the work of his father's farm in Illinois, and he thus continued his active association with the funda mental industry oi agriculture until 1910, his educational advan tages in the meanwhile having been those of the public schools. In that year he became active manager of the grain business of H. E. Whitler, and after retaining this position three years he became a representative of the well known Chicago grain firm of Lamson Brothers Company. With this concern he remained until April, 1916, when he established his present independent commission busi ness at Monmouth, a city which has been his home Since 1914. Mr. Abbey is a Republican in politics, is a loyal and progressive citizen, even as he is a wide-awake business man, and he is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and the Tribe of Ben Hur. He has been retained as a correspondent for not only Lamson Brothers Company, of Chicago, but also for Ware Leland, another promi nent Chicago commission concern, but he has severed his alliances in these connections. Mr. Abbey was born and reared in Illinois, the date of his nativity having been November 13, 1874. He is a son of Henry M. And Margaret (clark) Abbey, his father having been a native of the state of New York and having become one of the successful farmers and honored and influential citizens of his county. His death occurred in July, 1912. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major history of Chicago ever written, A History of Chicago covers the city’s great history over two centuries, from 1673 to 1893. Originally conceived as a centennial history of Chicago, the project became, under the guidance of renowned historian Bessie Louise Pierce, a definitive, three-volume set describing the city’s growth—from its humble frontier beginnings to the horrors of the Great Fire, the construction of some of the world’s first skyscrapers, and the opulence of the 1893 World’s Fair. Pierce and her assistants spent over forty years transforming historical records into an inspiring human story of growth and survival. Rich with anecdotal evidence and interviews with the men and women who made Chicago great, all three volumes will now be available for the first time in years. A History of Chicago will be essential reading for anyone who wants to know this great city and its place in America. “With this rescue of its history from the bright, impressionable newspapermen and from the subscription-volumes, Chicago builds another impressive memorial to its coming of age, the closing of its first ‘century of progress.’”—E. D. Branch, New York Times (1937)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1862, the directors of the Chicago Board of Trade used their significant influence to organize perhaps the most prominent Union artillery unit in the Western Theater. Enlistees were Chicagoans, mainly clerks. During the Civil War, the battery was involved in 11 major battles, 26 minor battles and 42 skirmishes. They held the center at Stones River, repulsing a furious Confederate attack. A few days later, they joined 50 other Union guns in stopping one of the most dramatic offensives in the Western Theater. With Colonel Robert Minty's cavalry, they resisted an overwhelming assault along Chickamauga Creek. This history chronicles the actions of the Chicago Board of Trade Independent Light Artillery at the battles of Farmington, Dallas, Noonday Creek, Atlanta, in Kilpatrick's Raid, and at Nashville, and Selma.

Book excerpt: Norman Bruce Ream was born in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1844, the son of a farmer. He exhibited a commercial sense, but the Civil War interrupted his ambitions. Wounded twice, he returned home a hero. After some unsuccessful business ventures out west, he went to Chicago in 1871 and became a commission merchant in the Union Stockyards. A few years later, he moved uptown and traded grains and provisions in the pits of the Board of Trade. Money poured in. Indeed, by 1886 he was a millionaire (also married and the father of several children). He started investing in real estate, urban transit companies, railroad stock--and began consolidating and financing enterprises. At century's end, he was traveling to New York City, impressing financiers like J. Pierpont Morgan. Indeed, he helped Morgan put together the U.S. Steel Corporation and the International Harvester Company, served on many boards, and even advised Morgan during the panic of 1907. But life grew turbulent. Public sentiment soured towards Wall Street and the wealthy. This, along with the presumed indiscretions of some of his children, kept his name in the press. He died in 1915, and gradually, his life was forgotten.
