Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bench and Bar of Illinois, Vol. 1: Historical and Reminiscent It may be recalled that in the prospectus of this work there appeared the following words, which, per se, stand in justification of the history of the Bench and Bar of Illinois: "The memory of the life of even a lawyer is fleeting - a name written upon the sandy shore of time, effaced by the oncoming wave of the next generation; his work is for the present, and unless some effort is made to preserve in permanent form a record of that work it will be lost to the future. Even the great judges are forgotten; they live only in the pages of dry and musty reports, and then the recollection is only a shadow. In no better way can some of the most valued items in the history of the lives of such men be preserved than through the medium of such a work. Thus may the merits and virtues of those eminent in the profession be recorded for the emulation and guidance of the younger generation." In the compilation of the work the editor and the publishers have fully recognized the magnitude of the task set them, and in the collation of material for the same there has been a constant aim to use a wise discrimination in regard to the selection of subjects and the methods of treatment. The province of the work is entirely aside from technical lines, and the subject-matter is presented in a style which is mainly reminiscent, though due recognition is accorded the contemporaries of the bench and bar of this end-of-the-century period. In the compilation recourse has been had to divers authorities, including various histories and historical collections, and implying an almost endless array of papers and documents, both public and private. That so much matter could be gathered from so many original sources and then sifted and assimilated for the production of a single work without incurring a modicum of errors and inaccuracies-, would be too much to expect of any corps of writers, no matter how able they might be as statisticians or skilled as compilers of such works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bench and Bar of Michigan: A Volume of History and Biography The editor has been actuated by a sincere purpose to estimate each subject fairly and honestly. His undewaluntion or overestimate of any lawyer is attributable either to want of information or a great deal of misinformation, and is not clue to malice or partiality. A few of the prominent and deserving lawyers have chosen to abbreviate their sketches, omitting much that would have been interesting to readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bench and Bar of Wisconsin: History and Biography, With Portrait Illustrations The education of the lawyer should include a thorough culture in literature as well as law. The broader the scope of his studies and the ampler his resources, the more certain is he, other things being equal, to achieve eminence in his profession. Rarely is a cause of so little con sequence tried that the lawyer will not find an advantage in being able to draw illustration and incident, and it may be anecdote, from a well furnished storehouse. Addressing a jury in a court in Maine, the famous John Holmes surprised and delighted all who heard him with a lucid description of the mechanism of a clock; he captured jury as well as spectators and won his case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of the Madison County Bench and Bar This little booklet contains an interesting address by B. Fitch Tompkins, Esq., Clerk of the Surrogate's Court of Madison County, delivered before the Madison County Historical Society April 19, 191 1, at the Court House in Wampsville. It was prepared by the author with much care, research of records and painstaking, with a view of being thoroughly reliable and correcting several errors of historical importance, among other things adding an honorable name to the chain of Madison County judges, strangely enough overlooked by other local historians. The address is a most valuable acquisition. It has been kindly donated to the Society by Mr. Tompkins, himself an honored member.
