Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of Herculaneum pottery in early nineteenth-century Liverpool marked a pivotal moment in the clay arts. This book provides a comprehensive history of Herculaneum pottery—highly sought after in North America—and its rapid rise to international prominence. Renowned Liverpool porcelain collector Peter Hyland examines the pottery's relatively brief heyday from about 1800 to 1820. He then re-defines its niche within the wider context of the established Liverpool pottery tradition, which dates back to 1700. Liverpool's earthenware and porcelain were exported around the world, and Hyland investigates records to reveal the surprising extent to which the United States and Canada relied on Herculaneum for their fine wares. Ultimately, he considers why the pottery factory failed, showing how competition from Merseyside led to the factory's eventual closure in 1840. Building on the seminal work of Alan Smith, Peter Hyland's study draws on new scholarly research and recent excavations to reveal the extensive range of wares and decorations made at the Herculaneum factory. This new edition is illustrated with a wealth of full-color images, and it will stand as the definitive text on Herculaneum pottery.

Book excerpt: The qualities that have caused clay to be overlooked as a medium by those writing the history of modern art are precisely those that make it attractive to artists. It is easy to work, fragile, inexpensive, unpredictable and physical, and therefore inherently subversive. A Secret History of Clay reveals the previously undisclosed love affair between artists and this most humble of materials and in doing so re-writes modern art history. Works by some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, many never reproduced before, will be fully illustrated in colour, tracing the transition of ceramics from a craft pursuit to something altogether more radical. Simon Groom, curator of the exhibition, argues the case for a re-examination of the use of clay in modern art. The distinguished ceramicist and writer Edmund de Waal explores its history, examining little-known works works by groups such as the Fauves, Russian Suprematists, German Expressionists, Italian Futurists, and CoBrA, as well as by artists including Duchamp, Miro, Picasso and Noguchi. The book will also feature extracts from the manifestos and writings of both artists and critics on the use of clay. Starting with Gauguin,

Book excerpt: Merseyside has one of the richest public collections of art in provincial Britain, much of it originally assembled in nineteenth-century private collections and then donated to public institutions by the owners. The essays in this booklet discuss four of the nineteenth-century collectors, men whose tastes in pictorial art ranged from old masters to the Pre-Raphaelites. One of the four also collected, on a large scale, ceramics and other decorative artifacts. These individuals commissioned the work of local artists, to encourage and support them. They also founded societies and institutions, partly in order to display their collections and thus educate the local public. The riches of the art they brought into Liverpool or their support generated in the locality was, inevitably, an expression of their personal wealth - riches in art indeed. But these particular individuals were more than merely avid collectors of lofty patrons. They held clear views about the social and moral value of art and about its contemporary "progress", views expressed implicitly in their collections and in two instances also in public statements.
