Book excerpt: This had been a local Corps – the Bhopal Levy (1859–1865) and the Bhopal Bn (1865–1903) – before gaining the title of 9th Bhopal Infantry (1903–1922). Its nickname at that time was ‘the Bo-peeps'. During WWI it raised three additional Bns, two of which served in Mesopotamia, but this book is concerned mainly with the original pre-war (Regular) 1st Bn. It served on the Western Front with the Indian Corps, in Egypt, and then in Mesopotamia. Its adventures are described here in good detail, with plenty of individuals being mentioned by name in the narrative. In 1922, the 1/9th Bhopal Infantry became the 4/16th Punjab Regt. Index, Apps: with full citations, incl VC award to Sepoy Chatta Singh), list of former COs, list of other officers (1818–1914 and 1922–1930, with service details), list of Honorary Colonels, notes on units which supplied reinforcement drafts to the Regt during WWI.

Book excerpt: The Indian Army underwent significant changes in command, organization and composition from the time of the Indian Mutiny of 1857-59, to the outbreak of World War I. Prior to the Mutiny, the government of British India was exercised by the East India Company, who divided the country into three Presidencies, each with its own army under its own commander-in-chief. When Lord Kitchener was appointed Commander-in-Chief India in 1902, he undertook a major reorganization of the entire army. This book examines the infantry regiments of the Indian Army, at a time when it saw extensive action in campaigns throughout China, Egypt, the Sudan, Burma and Tibet.

Stort set siden selvstændigheden har de to lande været i mere eller mindre væbnet konflikt med hinanden "behind ramparts of ever-more expensive stockpiles of imported weaponry. Despite this, the same jawans remains in the ranks, still proud of their military calling and still in their old bataillions, bearing in some cases still the names of the British officers who raised them a century ago. This book endeavour to show how the Indian Army was created and what happened to it after Partition until the present day."

One of the most common criticisms of the U.S. plan to invade Iraq in 2003 is that too few troops were used. The argument often fails to satisfy anyone for there is no standard against which to judge. A figure of 20 troops per 1000 of the local population is often mentioned as the standard, but as McGrath shows, that figure was arrived at with some questionable assumptions. By analyzing seven military operations from the last 100 years, he arrives at an average number of military forces per 1000 of the population that have been employed in what would generally be considered successful military campaigns. He also points out a variety of important factors affecting those numbers-from geography to local forces employed to supplement soldiers on the battlefield, to the use of contractors-among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How fortunate it is that Robert Atkins wrote up his experiences as a young Gurkha officer in India and later Malaya as, seventy years on, they form an important contemporaneous record of two historically significant periods. When India was granted Independence in 1947, irreconcilable religious differences made Partition inevitable. His account of the death, destruction and suffering that he and his soldiers witnessed makes for traumatic yet compelling reading. In the aftermath of Independence the Gurkha Regiments were split between the Indian and British Armies and Robert returned to England and British service. Three years later on his way to fight in the Korean War, he was ordered to join 1st Battalion, 6th Gurkha Rifles engaged in the battle against communist terrorists, known as the Malayan Emergency. Robert saw more than his share of action over next seven years in this eventually successful but bitterly fought campaign. His courage and leadership earned him the Military Cross. The two diaries are introduced with helpful narratives setting each in their historical context. Written with admirable modesty, this superb personal account informs and entertains.
