Book excerpt: The "Telangana people's struggle," stretching from 1946 to 1951, was the armed rebellion of men as well as women against the oppressive policies of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Hyderabad was India's largest princely state with a population density, estimated above seventeen million. Curiously, almost forty percent of the whole population was then under the control of those landlords who mercilessly established their own feudal estates. The feudal network called for manual labor, including both men and women, in the context of the feudal business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of Telangana as a separate state of the Indian Union on June 2, 2014 fulfilled the long cherished dream of the people of the region. In 1724, the Telangana region was part of the Hyderabad state under the Nizam. The Muslim rulers of the Asaf Jahi dynasty had no love for the country and tried to dismember India in 1948 by trying to create Osmanistan. Part I of this book describes how the people of Telangana fought to safeguard the unity of India. They succeeded in their attempts when the Government of India successfully launched 'Police Action' against the Nizam in September 1948. This part of the book concludes when the Hyderabad state trifurcated and Telangana was merged with other Telugu areas to form a new state called Andhra Pradesh. Part II describes why the Telangana people yearned for a separate identity as a state. The people wished for the golden age of the Kakatiya Dynasty. The Kakatiya rulers (11-14th century) patronised Telugu language and culture, secular ideals and had a corruption free government, equality of sexes and practised water conservation. The new Telangana government is trying to create a Bangaru Telangana (Golden Telangana) by emulating the rule of the Kakatiya dynasty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Putchalapalli Sundarayya (1 May 1913 - 19 May 1985) was a renowned national liberation fighter. He was one of the founders of the Communist Movement in India and an indefatigable fighter for the rights of toiling masses of India. He led the glorious Telangana peasant armed struggle in the 1940s against the despotic rule of Nizam of Hyderabad and liberated many from the shackles of servitude under Vetti. Sundarayya provides a detailed description of the intricacies - both decision-making and the execution of plans by the various guerilla squads. The book provides a ringside view of the movement of squads, the network of communications and the police terror. It highlights the movement, the years in the forests fighting the Nizam's forces and then the Indian army. It provides a wealth of detail and any account of the Telengana struggle is incomplete without reference to this authoritative work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to present the inside story of the Telangana movement that developed due to historical reasons. The movement, in this work, has brought forward the Telangana lower class’s response to the established cultural hegemony of the Andhra linguistic elite and affluent agrarian communities who, in their perception, monopolized the political power and economic resources. The movement voices the democratic yearnings of service castes, artisans, Dalits and nomads who through their instant association with the movement expressed aspirations for their due share in political power and administrative structure. The leadership that has come from the regional elite has, however, articulated only the reasons of 'self-respect and regional autonomy'. This work brings out the two-fold character in the movement. It also gives insights into the possible need of remaking states in India in the interest of the inclusion of these social groups in political structures so that democracy might further percolate downwards. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1956, a unified Telugu-speaking state of Andhra Pradesh came into being. In February 2014, Parliament bifurcated it to create two Telugu-speaking states: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Old History, New Geography provides the context, text and subtext to the bifurcation, which continues to be contentious and controversial. Jairam Ramesh makes an ideal commentator, given that he was a key member of the group of ministers (GoM) set up by the United Progressive Alliance government in October 2013 to prepare the legislation for the bifurcation. For the next seven months, he became the GoM's prime mover and its public face and was thus always in the crossfire as it strove to balance competing claims and differing demands to ensure a just and equitable outcome. Blending sharp commentary and humour and drawing on his meticulously maintained personal records, parliamentary debates and a variety of thus far undisclosed primary sources, Ramesh recounts this momentous event as it unfolded. He brings to the Andhra bifurcation story the kind of authority and authenticity only an insider can. This singularly important book is a narrative of history told first-hand by someone who was not just a witness to it but one who actually shaped it. Combining an intensely personal account with in-depth scholarship, Old History, New Geography is a must-read not only for academia but, crucially, also for the general reader seeking an understanding of contemporary India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the state of Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1956, the people of Telangana (the region ruled by the Nizams at the time of independence) did not want to be a part of it, fearing that they would be displaced by the more enterprising and better educated migrants from the Andhra region. In 1969, massive agitations for a separate Telangana left 400 people dead but the movement petered out. With the creation of new states like Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Uttaranchal in 2000, the battle for Telangana began once again. In 2009, the Indian government announced that Telangana would be a separate state, but is now dilly-dallying, worried about the backlash from the Andhra region. At the heart of the problem is the city of Hyderabad, which lies bang in the middle of Telangana but is being claimed by both sides. Is the upsurge in Telangana so strong that the Indian government will be unable to resist it? Is there a middle course? This book explores the complex issues, and the underlying causes of the Telangana movement.

Book excerpt: A dazzling collection that captures the essence of Hyderabad, offering glimpses of the various strands that go into its making, fact and legend, old-world quaintness and the highest hi-tech, eccentricity and intrigue, the calm of genteelness and the fury of rebellion. Hyderabad is a city once ruled by the worlds richest man who invested most lavishly in his state, most shabbily in his wardrobe; it holds stories of a courtesan who fought wars, counselled prime ministers, sang her own verse and enthralled luminaries who mattered; of a chief minister who transformed it into a hi-tech hub; and of a sports star who brought the young glamour of India to every tennis court in the world. Home as much to the Golconda as to Jacob, the 187-carat diamond used as a paperweight by the Nizam, and to rock landscapes two and a half million years old, Hyderabad is a city that forever mixes cultures, cuisines, religions and languages. Here, Persian turned alloy with Telugu, Marathi and Arabic to yield a special version of Urdu, Dakhini. And here, as Andhra mingled with Telangana, a smiling mildness has survived, disarming at every turn, just as grace under pressure, regardless of gender, is unfailing. In The Untold Charminar readers will discover a city they will want to explore, as Sarojini Naidu, Sir Mark Tully and William Dalrymple rub shoulders with Ian Austin, Meenakshi Mukherjee and Anees Jung, regaling you with their feast of hard facts and hearsay; as each foreign visitor shares his story through Narendra Luther; as the film-makers Shyam Benegal and Nagesh Kukunoor paint their vivid memories of home; as poets, not just the maverick Makhdoom and Gaddar, raise their voices in song; as statesmen, academics and aficionados hold forth on the completely different Hyderabad each experienced. And when Tejaswini Niranjana profiles the vigilante Vijayasanthi and Dharmender Prasad picks out place names and explains their sometimes almost mystic origins, as Bachi Karkaria, Omkar Goswami and Harsha Bhogle share their typically offbeat views of a favourite city, readers will be persuaded to believe they have encountered not a city but the inner workings of a very complex character.
