Book Synopsis British Buckeyes by : William E. Van Vugt
Download or read book British Buckeyes written by William E. Van Vugt and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How early British immigrants shaped Ohio? Because of their so similar linguistic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, the English, Scottish, and Welsh immigrants are often regarded as the invisible immigrants assimilating into early American society easily and quickly and often losing their ethnic identities. Yet, of all of Ohio's immigrants the British were the most influential in terms of shaping the state's politics and institutions. Also significant were their contributions of farming, mining, iron production, textiles, pottery, and engineering. Until British Buckeyes, historians have all but ignored and neglected these Industrious settlers. Author William E Van Vugt uses hundreds of biographies from county archives and histories, letters, Ohio and British census figures, and ship passenger lists to identify these immigrants; and draw a portrait of their occupations, settlement patterns, experiences and to underscore their role in Ohio history.

Download or read book States at War, Volume 5 written by Richard F. Miller and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War States and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This crucial reference book, the fifth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Ohio during the Civil War. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant-general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, federal and state executive speeches and proclamations, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use by professional historians and amateurs, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual stateĆs war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone wishing to know what has been written on the Pennsylvania Germans will welcome the reappearance of this classic bibliography. Anyone aspiring to a command of the literature on the Pennsylvania Germans must master its contents; and anyone doing research in Pennsylvania-German genealogy must have it at his side. It is basic, and no efficient research can be done without it. Divided into subject categories, the bibliography contains citations to all published writings dealing with the Germans in colonial North America (chiefly Pennsylvania), whether in the form of general histories, magazine articles, newspapers, pamphlets, mug-books, church records, town, county, and state histories, or printed genealogies, and it attempts to give as complete an account of the printed source material as possible. It is in effect the starting point in Pennsylvania-German research because it acquaints the researcher with everything that had been published up through the cut-off year of 1933.
