Download or read book The Big Picture written by Dennis Littky and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the purpose of education? What kind of people do we want our children to grow up to be? How can we design schools so that students will acquire the skills they'll need to live fulfilled and productive lives? These are just a few of the questions that renowned educator Dennis Littky explores in The Big Picture: Education Is Everyone's Business. The schools Littky has created and led over the past 35 years are models for reformers everywhere: small, public schools where the curriculum is rich and meaningful, expectations are high, student progress is measured against real-world standards, and families and communities are actively engaged in the educational process. This book is for both big "E" and small "e" educators: * For principals and district administrators who want to change the way schools are run. * For teachers who want students to learn passionately. * For college admissions officers who want diverse applicants with real-world learning experiences. * For business leaders who want a motivated and talented workforce. * For parents who want their children to be prepared for college and for life. * For students who want to take control over their learning . . . and want a school that is interesting, safe, respectful, and fun. * For anyone who cares about kids. Here, you'll find a moving account of just what is possible in education, with many of the examples drawn from the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center ("The Met") in Providence, Rhode Island--a diverse public high school with the highest rates of attendance and college acceptance in the state. The Met exemplifies personalized learning, one student at a time. The Big Picture is a book to reenergize educators, inspire teachers in training, and start a new conversation about kids and schools, what we want for both, and how to make it happen.

Book Synopsis Leaving to Learn: How Out-of-School Learning Increases Student Engagement and Reduces Dropout Rates by : Elliot Washor, Charles Mojkowski
Download or read book Leaving to Learn: How Out-of-School Learning Increases Student Engagement and Reduces Dropout Rates written by Elliot Washor, Charles Mojkowski and published by Urban Fox Studios. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, authors Washor and Mojkowski observe that beneath the worrisome levels of dropouts from our nation’s high school lurks a more insidious problem: student disengagement from school and from deep and productive learning. To keep students in school and engaged as productive learners through to graduation, schools must provide experiences in which all students do some of their learning outside school as a formal part of their programs of study. All students need to leave school—frequently, regularly, and, of course, temporarily—to stay in school and persist in their learning. To accomplish this, schools must combine academic learning with experiential learning, allowing students to bring real-world learning back into the school, where it should be recognized, assessed, and awarded academic credit. Learning outside of school, as a complement to in-school learning, provides opportunities for deep engagement in rigorous learning.

This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Public Education in Rhode Island, From 1636 to 1876 Roger Williams, after returning in 1654 from a two years' visit in England, wrote thus of some of his employments while in that country: "It pleased the Lord to call me for some time, and with some persons, to practice the Hebrew, the Greek, Latin, French and Dutch. The secretary of the council (Mr. Milton) for my Dutch I read him, read me many more languages. I taught two young gentlemen, a parliament man's sons, as we teach our children English, by words, phrases and constant talk." In these brief sentences we see the founder of Rhode Island as a scholar, a teacher, and the friend of Milton. It will always seem a surprising thing that the colony founded by such a man should not have established for itself, like the adjoining colonies of Massachusetts and Connecticut, a system of common schools. Yet nothing is plainer than the reasons which led to this; and they cannot be more clearly stated than they were given a quarter of a century ago by Hon. E. R. Potter, a man who has rendered this State almost equal service in law and in education: - "One of the first things which strikes an observer in considering the early history of Rhode Island, is, that the population was not homogeneous. Massachusetts was settled by colonies from one people, and all actuated by the same notions of religious and civil government, and of a similar religious creed. Connecticut was an offshoot from Massachusetts, and the same principles and ideas had a controlling influence in its settlement. "Rhode Island, on the contrary, was settled by men of all religious views and opinions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union, yet it is also one of the most densely populated. Its political culture has until recently resembled the old-style patronage politics of a city-state. The Ocean State's politics have been highly individualistic, contentious, and distinct from those of surrounding states since its founding by Roger Williams. The state's individualism is embodied in the statue?"The Independent Man"?that stands atop its statehouse.øRhode Island Politics and Government is an essential introduction to the history, structure, and characteristics of politics in Rhode Island. Explained in turn are such components and factors as the state's constitution, general assembly, executive branch, party system, interest groups, budgetary process, and relationship to the federal government. The authors also explore the nature of local government.
