His criticisms, which had a not unpleasant sub-acid Character, were widely relished. I recall a visit made to the university by a very distinguished German professor and statesman, who had been treated with some severity by Professor Tuttle in his book on German Leaders. It was with many misgivings that I brought the two men together, but my confidence that the two old enemies would soon be reconciled was justified, and our guest left us evidently delighted with his critic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Friedrich II. Of Prussia, Vol. 4: Called Frederick the Great Part First of his Britannic Majesty's Sorrows, the Britannic or Domestic Part, is now perhaps conceivable to readers. Bat as to the Second, the Germanic or Pragmatic Part, - articulate History, after much consideration, is content to renounce attempting these; feels that these will remain forever inconceivable to mankind in the now altered times. So small a gentleman; and he feels, dismally though with heroism, that he has got the axis of the world on his shoulder. Poor Majesty! His eyes, proud as Jove's, are nothing like so perspicacious; a pair of the poorest eyes: and he has to scan with them, and unriddle under pain of death, such a waste of insoluble intricacies, troubles and world-perils as seldom was, - even in Dreams. In fact, it is of the nature of a long Nightmare Dream, all this of the Pragmatic, to his poor Majesty and Nation; and wakeful History must not spend herself upon it, beyond the essential. May 12th, betimes this Year, his Majesty got across to Hanover, Harrington with him; anxious to contemplate near at hand that Camp of the Old Dessauer's at Gottin, and the other fearful phenomena, French, Prussian and other, in that Country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the German Struggle for Liberty, Vol. 4 For the student of history this period offers peculiar difficulties, springing from the social structure of modern Germany. The families possessing historical information regarding the revolutionary period of 1848 are averse to making this information public for fear that it might ai feet the professional career of some member of the family. N 0 such obstacle stands in the way of the historical student in France or England. In the next volume I shall hope to show how the peo ple lost what they had gained in 1848, how military governments once more prevailed, and how, in 1871, Prussia finally conquered by the sword a position in Ger many which she had declined to accept when offered to her by a generous people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 4 of 4 If we once more survey the state of European politics in July 1794, we see the military power of France decidedly in the ascendant, and a general exhaustion, and disinclination for war, on the part of the allied Powers. England alone was victorious at sea, and still resolved to continue the contest. Prussia had placed her Rhine Army at the disposal of the British Government, but otherwise directed all her hopes and efforts towards the war in Poland. Holland, the petty German sovereigns, Naples and Spain, wished for nothing so eagerly as peace - peace at almost any price. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Times of Stein, or Germany and Prussia in the Napoleonic Age, Vol. 1 of 4 IT is not to set forth the merits of a great man who has been too little known that I write the life of Stein at such an unusual length, but on account of the intrinsic importance of the revolutions in which he took part. It has been my object to consider the transformation of Germany and Prussia in the Napoleonic age, which has usually been contemplated by us only as a part of the life of Napoleon, in its proper place as a part of German history. When I first asked myself how this subject might best be treated, I remarked that it was one which especially needed to be gathered up in a person. I soon satisfied my self that the only person who could be taken in this way to represent his nation and his time was Stein. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founding of the German Empire by William I, Vol. 4: Based Chiefly Upon Prussian State Documents While Prussia with the liberation of Schleswig Holstein attained the first stage in her great career, the Emperor Napoleon also made an important move preparatory to the realization of his favorite old idea, the completion of the national independence of Italy. In this matter many things had happened, as we know, contrary to his hopes. He had wished to force the Austrians out of Italy, and then to give to the States of the peninsula a confederate constitution under the headship of the Pope. But Prussia's inter ference had forced him to leave Venetia to the Emperor Francis Joseph, whereupon the population of Central Italy, and unfortunately also of the Papal Legations and Marches, united, as did finally Sicily and Naples, with Piedmont; so that instead of an Italian Con federation a unified Kingdom of Italy arose. Napoleon had permitted, in return for the cession of Savoy and Nice, what he could not decently prevent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
