Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 2 of 3 Materials for forming an Opinion of the gravity of the situation were gradually supplied to the English Government. The Duke of Newcastle, until July, 1860, seemed unconscious. Parliament slumbered. Not since April, 1854, had New Zealand papers been presented. In July, 1860, they were again laid on the table. The Duke wrote that he could not hold out any hope that it would be possible to increase permanently the present military force; sent out four silver-headed sticks to be given by the Governor to chiefs, 1 and started on a tour with the Prince of Wales to the United States, leaving Sir G. Corne wall Lewis and Mr. Chichester Fortescue to sign documents until his return. The former of the two brought a judgment to bear which the Duke had wanted. He saw danger. Mro Richmond's celebrated but (as he called it) able and interesting memorandum shocked him as it had shocked Sir W. Denison. Her Majesty's Government had very carefully considered the case, and were not prepared to meet Mr. Richmond's wishes. A policy which requires the continual presence of a large force carries, in most cases, its condemnation on its face. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 1 At one time it was hoped that several persons of great ability and high character, who had amassed much recorded information and had lived long in New Zealand, would combine the results and give them to the world. But that hope has vanished. I learned from one of them, who went to New Zealand in 1839, and lives there now, that on the occasion of a visit to Europe he abandoned the idea of publication, and destroyed his manuscripts. The failure of that project, and encouragement from those concerned in it, embolden me to present the following narrative compiled with a diligent endeavour to test every statement by reference to the most authentic sources of information. Or Settler and Maori, in New Zealand, Vol. 2 of 2 Northern New Zealand has two special products, which are peculiar to the country, and found no where else. They are kauri timber and kauri-gum. When speaking of Northern New Zealand in these sketches, I do not thereby intend the whole of the North Island, as has been previously explained; I mean that northern part of it which may be more properly designated The Land of the Kauri. The kauri grows throughout all that part of the old province of Auckland which lies to the north of S. Lat. 37 30' or It does not grow naturally anywhere south of the thirty-eighth parallel of latitude, nor, I believe, can it be induced to flourish under cultivation south of its natural boundary line. John Ballance and Sir William Fox in 1893 As my life and health have been spared to so near the close of the nineteenth century. I have been able to fulfil my conditional promise to continue my History of New Zealand for a period embracing some thirty-two eventful years. As intimated in my preface to the first volume, I have found the task more easy and more satisfactory, with the systematic and reliable public records available under our more modern civilisation, than it could be when relying so much upon the incomplete diaries of our earliest navigators, or upon the still more broken records of our earliest missionaries. I have consequently been able to write this second volume with more confidence, and the pleasure of writing it has been greatly enhanced by the very kind spirit in which my first volume has been reviewed, both by the New Zealand and by the English press, and approved by many of the public workers who, within my own memory, have assisted to form the history of New Zealand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and the War The measures which were prepared by the General Conference for organizing a system of government for the Church in New Zealand have been completed; and though based only on the principle of voluntary compact, they promise to be productive of useful results. If the subject of organizing a constitutional government for the Church of England shall ever become a question of practical importance, something may be learned from the New Zealand experiment. It must be interesting indeed, under any circumstances, to witness the difficulties which churchmen have to em counter when thrown upon their own resources in a new country, without law or organization, with out endowments, and beyond the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical tribunals of the mother country.
