Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northern Boundary of Indiana It would be natural to suppose that in pushing this boundary line northward our forefathers were actuated by the desire to secure for Indiana a foothold on Lake Michigan, with its com mercial advantages. How great a part our rivers played in settling these boundary lines may be seen from a statement of Senator William Hendricks, that One object which Indiana had in going north of the east and west line, so often men tioned, was, that she might include the mouth of the St. Joseph river, and have a harbor there on the lake. In that she has been defeated.30 As late as December, 1833 we find Represen tative John Ewing, of Indiana, pressing this point, with the introduction into the House of Representatives of a resolution asking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Indiana The Indiana legislature met again on Nov. 3, 1806, and the pro-slavery people laid aside their differences on the question Of dividing the territory long enough to agree on a petition for the suspension Of the slavery clause, which was duly sent to congress. But there was not the same agreement outside. The anti-harri son people in the Illinois country sent in a peti tion for division and slavery, and the Harrison people sent in one for slavery but against division. The committee Of congress to which they were all referred reported favorably to the suspension of the slavery clause and against division, but no action was taken on the report. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gazetteer of the St. Joseph Valley, Michigan and Indiana: With a View of Its Hydraulic and Business Capacities Much doubt and uncertainty hang around many of the events which go to make up the early history of a new country. The solitary wilds of an unexplored continent afford few opportunities for making those notes and records which, as time advances, be come precious to the seeker after historical truths; and, as a general thing, the explorers and settlers of our Great West have been men little accustomed to literary pursuits and less desirous of literary honors. Besides, the arduous labors and engrossing duties of pioneer life leave little room or opportunity for that quiet and leisure indispensable to scholarly habits. Thus it is, that a considerable portion of the interesting events of our first settlements, and of the discovery of the country itself, have faded from the memory of man or are only handed down as traditions, distorted by the uncertain medium or mystified by the lapse of time. True, occasionally men of learning and taste have wandered into the Very heart of the continent and, with fertile pens, have recorded what they did, and saw and suffered. Especially is this true of those adventurous French explorers who first penetrated the un broken forests and traversed the almost boundless prairies of the West; yet, even they left much for doubt and more for conjecture. Their relations are frequently little more than skeletons around. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A History of Evansville and Vanderburgh County, Indiana (Classic Reprint) by : Joseph P. Elliott

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Evansville and Vanderburgh County, Indiana This history is a recital of prominent local events of our people from the earliest clay to the present. Their habits and customs and growth will be told in the simple, plain manner of those pioneers. I had almost said in the open, frank style of that heroic age - when bravery was exercised and deeds of valor performed, when the protection of life and the guarding of property were the incentives to action, when the home and the family were jealously watched against the wiles of the skulking Indians, when the vain ambitions of conventional society of this swift day were entirely wanting. In those days, let us not forget, a man's word of honor was his bond, as inviolable as his sacred rights, and his simple "yes" or "no" were never repudiated nor impeached by himself, nor discredited by neighbors. They were given without qualification or reservation and accepted in the spirit and force that the conventionalisms or customs of that day attached to them. Sham and pretension were no parts of the Hoosier pioneer's nature, nor would he suffer anything to smirch his good name or compromise his family honor. He scrupulously separated bis politics and his religion, and personal differences were sometimes settled at the rifle's muzzle. Instances are not wanting where the bravado and the thief have been summarily dealt with. The code of honor among those primitive people was of such a high standard and inflexibility that a villian and a sncak could not adapt themselves to it, and therefore they found more congenial quarters elsewhere, as a rule. Dishonor and bad faith in anyone were never forgiven, and a promise was held sacred. Their high standard of equity and probity developed a race of honorable men and women, and their application of strict morals to daily life restrained the evilly inclined and gave them honest public officials and professional men of superior character and sterling qualities. Reputation was not then a mere bond of dollars and cents, as it is m our rushing, forgetting, exciting, nerve-exhausting, peace-destroying day. This brief portraiture of the majestic character of those early heroes may convey a glimpse at the threshold of those of whom we write. No labors are required at our bands, we are delighted to say, to frame defenses or invent apologies for these friends and neighbors, who are set down in this volume with loving care and jealous love. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Mitchell and Marion Township, Indiana It should be remembered that at the be ginning of the last century there was not a single white inhabitant in what is now Law rence County, and for several years after, none in that part of the county embracing what is now Marion Township and while this part of the county had always belong ed to, or at least claimed, so far as we have history to guide us, by various Indian tribes, the first settlers found but little ev idence of any of them having lived here. This part of the country it seems had been claimed by several tribes but permanently occupied by none. The early settler found no remains of Indian villages, nor was any land cleared to indicate that the red man had ever lived here. Occasionally the re mains of a Wigwam was found and the abundance of Indian arrow-heads and In dian axes found would indicate, however, that roving bands of Indians had been here perhaps, during the hunting seasons. And while we have but little evidence from which to conclude that this community was ever permanently occupied by the red man. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of Evansville and Vanderburg County, Indiana, Vol. 1 Of course for quail and rabbits the old square trap made out of hickory splints, fastened together with bark and set with a nubbin of corn on a figure four, was used. The bear trap was a huge affair - an enormous log, raised up and set so that it could fall only in a certain place, and to get to the bait the bear must step exactly into position. In setting these, the skill of the hunter was again called into play. The world wagged then just as it does now. Some hunters were very lucky because they used their brains and were not afraid of toil and exposure to all kinds of weather, and their traps were set and watched as they should be. Others were unlucky simply because they liked a big fireplace too well. There were hardy pioneers in those days and some less hardy just as one finds them today in the pioneers of industry. In every work regarding the settlement of southern Indiana, much space is given to Indian murders and hunting. But it is a fact that after going carefully over all the old stories I cannot find an account of a single Indian atrocity that occurred at or near Evansville. All the old works are full of them, but the nearest crimes of which any record is given were near Vincennes, or Rockport (only one happening there) or along the Wa bash in White County. But of hunting tales there is a great store. I doubt if there are today in Evansville twenty men who understand how to pick up a sign or still hunt, for that is the way our ancestors hunted. It was only after the introduction of the long eared Virginia and North and South Carolina hounds that driving deer began. As I state elsewhere, cur dogs were the only kind known here in the early days. Many of the younger generation, however, love to read old hunting stories and this will reach the eyes of many who will never see a wild deer or wild turkey. Hounding deer and driving deer are synonymous. The hunter goes out with his hounds securely tied until he reaches a well known feeding place or a deer crossing, i. E., a place where they cross little lakes or creeks. The hounds are then released and the hunter stands quietly and listens. When they strike a trail that is fresh, they at once give tongue, i. E., begin to bark and follow it rapidly. The hunter listens till he gets the general direction and then hurries to some favorite crossing spot and waits for the deer to come running past him. All he has to do is to allow for the speed of the deer and kill it, for it usually passes within thirty yards of him.
