Book excerpt: Offering a delightful look back at 1909, this reprint is enhanced with numerous photographs, and even the advertisements include interesting bits of nostalgia. There is no apology in this proposal from a city seeking to grow, and certainly the person looking for opportunity in an ideal setting would have been impressed. Indeed, one might wonder how many current residents are in Johnson City because their parents or grandparents responded to this invitation from “The City of Opportunity…snugly nestled in the finest spot on God’s big world.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Johnson City area was originally settled in 1777 by pioneers from North Carolina with land grants. Dissatisfied with their representation in North Carolina, local citizens held a convention and formed the state of Franklin in 1784. This state was never recognized by Congress. It fizzled out in 1788, and Tennessee was formed in 1796. More settlers came to the new state, but the area was destined to grow into a city when a combination of railroad connections in the area sparked growth during the late 19th century. In 1903, the creation of the National Soldiers Home brought disabled veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Civil War to Johnson City. Readers of this book will enjoy viewing photographs and reading about early residents, prominent homes, and historic buildings such as the East Tennessee Normal School, which opened in 1911. Many of the more than 200 photographs in this volume have never before been published.

Book excerpt: Johnson City's growth was transformed through development of transportation in East Tennessee. Trails first blazed by migrating buffalo and Native Americans evolved into trails for stagecoaches, tracks for rail lines, and paved roads for automobiles. Henry Johnson realized the potential for the area and took a risk in 1854 when he bought a parcel from Abraham Jobe at the junction of the proposed East Tennessee & Virginia Railroad and the stage road to build a home, store, and depot. The community that arose around this complex was known by many names in its early days, including Blue Plum, Haynesville, and Johnson's Depot. However, on December 1, 1869, Johnson City received its first charter of incorporation from the State of Tennessee. As Johnson City approaches the 2019 sesquicentennial of the city's incorporation, this collection of postcards provides a look back at the people, places, and scenery around Johnson City.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book tells-for the first time-the story of Charlie Bowman, a musician from East Tennessee, who was a major influence on the distinctive fiddle style definitive of country music of the 1920s and 1930s. Charlie, along with three of his brothers and two of his daughters, were part of the Columbia Records "Johnson City Sessions" of 1928 and 1929. The farmer-turned-musician was one of the pioneers who helped shape and develop a vital American musical genre. Bowman was acquainted with many musical luminaries of that colorful era, including the legendary Carter Family. But this is not simply the biography of one man. Fiddlin' Charlie Bowman is the portrayal of a large colorful family, a close-knit mountain community, a geographic area, and a specific musical variety defined as old-time traditional Appalachian music. This volume explores Bowman's musical life - his work with various bands, including the Hill Billies (the first group to use that name to characterize old-time music), his years on the road touring, and his association with other performers. Beyond that, it chronicles the experiences of Bowman's large family left behind in Gray Station, Tennessee and details the many hardships caused by his departure and prolonged absence. Written by Bowman's great nephew Bob L. Cox, this biography provides an insider's perspective on an important but often overlooked musician. For his research, Cox drew on his family's records and memories. In addition to published books and articles, his resources included the family Bible, scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, and taped interviews with family members and friends. Sure to be enjoyed by all those interested in the origins of country music and Appalachian history, Fiddlin' Charlie Bowman is a delightful account of the life and times of this musical trailblazer. Bob Cox, a retired chemical engineer, is a history columnist with the Johnson City (Tennessee) Press, producing a weekly feature entitled Yesteryear.
