Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 9 As I close this volume, the last of the series, it is with thanks again to Mr. Haas and Dr. Gray, who have given me such material assistance; my special thanks likewise are due to several members connected with the publishing staff, to whose ready help I am much indebted. This prefatory note is written on the eve of my departure for the third time to the Orient, and as I look back over the long ages of India's history and its position in Asia, I can but be struck by the thought of the ever-increasing interest in the East felt by the West, and the growing importance of a knowledge of the great historic nations of the Land of the Dawn. Book excerpt: First published in 1906, this classic nine-volume history of the nation of India places it among the storied lands of antiquity, alongside Egypt, China, and Mesopotamia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 2 The historian's duty is to separate the true from the false, the certain from the uncertain, and the doubt ful from that which cannot be accepted. Every investigator must before all things look upon himself as one who is summoned to serve on a jury. He has only to consider how far the statement Of the case is complete and clearly set forth by the evidence. Then he draws his conclusion and gives his vote, whether it be that his Opinion coincides with that Of the foreman or not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Gazetteer of India, Vol. 9: Bomjur to Central India It should be stated that no attempt has been made lo distinguish between the long and short sounds of e and 0 in the Dravidian languages, which possess the vowel-sounds in 'bet' and 'hot' in addition to those given above. Nor has it been thought necessary to mark vowels as long in cases where mistakes in pronunciation were not likely to be made. Consonants Most Indian languages have different forms for a number of consonants, such as d, t, r, &c., marked in scientific works by the use of dots or italics. As the European ear distinguishes these with difficulty in ordinary pronunciation, it has been considered undesirable to embarrass the reader with them: and only two notes are required. In the fast place, the Arabic c, a strong guttural, has been represented by instead of, which is often used. Secondly, it should be remarked that aspirated consonants are common: and, in particular, dh and th (except in burma) never have the sound of th in 'this' or 'thin, ' but should be pronounced as in 'woodhouse' and 'boathook.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Current condition of each citizen, the society, and the nation are the result of a deeply complex history. But what we know from history books, especially academic textbooks, are constructs based on the narratives of political powers, colonists, and outdated socioeconomic analysts. The time has come to know and understand our true history from fresh and updated perspectives. The subject of this book is how foreign ideologies and forces Christian, Islamic, and later colonists, western and Marxists' profound and long-term influence have impacted India, her society, and people. With a computer science back- ground, Kanchan Banerjee makes this remarkable and significant contribution, attempting to depict the current era with unique and lively storytelling using carefully studied evidence, logical deduction, and analysis. He has given detailed and comprehensive descriptions and assessments from pre-Islamic Arabia's history, foreign attacks and invasions of the Huns, the Turks to the Islamic rule and occupation in Delhi, and the British colonial and imperial atrocities. How did the crash and fall of a great ancient civilization happen? How has it been wounded the body and soul of a nation to break into several pieces? And what is the way to change the direction to the path of recovery and revival? This book is an effort to find the answers to these questions from our true history. If we know our past, we can change our future as well.

This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of a translation of India's most beloved and influential epic tale--the Ramayana of Valmiki. As befits its position at the center of the work, Volume IV presents the hero Rama at the turning point of his fortunes. Having previously lost first his kingship and then his wife, he now forms an alliance with the monkey prince, Sugriva. Rama needs the monkeys to help him find his abducted wife, Sita, and they do finally discover where her abductor has taken her. But first Rama must agree to secure for his new ally the throne of the monkey kingdom by eliminating the reigning king, Sugriva's detested elder brother, Valin. The tragic rivalry between the two monkey brothers is in sharp contrast to Rama's affectionate relationship with his own brothers and forms a self-contained episode within the larger story of Rama's adventures. This volume continues the translation of the critical edition of the Valmiki Ramayana, a version considerably reduced from the vulgate on which all previous translations were based. It is accompanied by extensive notes on the original Sanskrit text and on several untranslated early Sanskrit commentaries.

By focusing on Chinese and Indian warfare, the book breaks the intellectual paradigm requiring non-Western histories and cultures to be compared to the West, and allows scholarship on two of the oldest civilizations to be brought together. An international group of scholars compare and contrast the modes and conceptions of warfare in China and India, providing important original contributions to the growing study of Asian military history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 9 In this volume I have endeavoured to present a picture of India as it appeared to foreign travellers who visited it at different periods in its history. Greek, Latin, Chinese, Arabic, Persian, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, French, and English sources have been drawn upon, since these are the historic nations which have come into direct or indirect contact with India. Among classical writers Strabo was given a preference, both for particular merits of his own and because his description of India includes the reports of his countrymen, Megasthenes, Onesikritos, and others, who accompanied Alexander the Great on his invading march into the land of the Indus. In the second chapter, in which the story of the practice of widow-burning, from the earliest ages to the time of its abolition, is told, space has been found for several Latin allusions, besides the Greek, Moslem, and European references to this ancient custom. The third chapter will be found to prove that the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim, Hiuan Tsang, was not only a pious devotee of India's broader creed, but also a keen observer and careful recorder of what he saw in the land of the faith that he loved.
