Although many Pacific Island cultures have a broad range of highly developed indigenous performance forms—including oral narrative, clowning, ritual, dance, and song—scripted drama is a relatively recent phenomenon. Emerging during a period of region-wide decolonization and indigenous self-determination movements, most of these plays reassert Pacific cultural perspectives and performance techniques in ways that employ, adapt, and challenge the conventions and representations of Western theater. Drawing together discussions in theater and performance studies, historiography, Pacific studies, and postcolonial studies, Remaking Pacific Pasts offers the first full-length comparative study of this dynamic and expanding body of work. It introduces readers to the field with an overview of significant works produced throughout the region over the past fifty years, including plays in English and in French, as well as in local vernaculars and lingua francas. The discussion traces the circumstances that have given rise to a particular modern dramatic tradition in each site and also charts routes of theatrical circulation and shared artistic influences that have woven connections beyond national borders. This broad survey contextualizes the more detailed case studies that follow, which focus on how Pacific dramatists, actors, and directors have used theatrical performance to critically engage the Pacific’s colonial and postcolonial histories. Chapters provide close readings of selected plays from Hawai‘i, Aotearoa/New Zealand, New Caledonia/Kanaky, and Fiji that treat events, figures, and legacies of the region’s turbulent past: Captain Cook’s encounters, the New Zealand Wars, missionary contact, the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, and the Fiji coups. The book explores how, in their remembering and retelling of these pasts, theater artists have interrogated and revised repressive and marginalizing models of historical understanding developed through Western colonialism or exclusionary indigenous nationalisms, and have opened up new spaces for alternative historical narratives and ways of knowing. In so doing, these works address key issues of identity, genealogy, representation, political parity, and social unity, encouraging their audiences to consider new possibilities for present and future action. This study emphasizes the contribution of artistic production to social and political life in the contemporary Pacific, demonstrating how local play production has worked to facilitate processes of creative nation building and the construction of modern regional imaginaries. Book excerpt: For my research I have conducted a comparative study of the select fiction by Gujarati women writers in its original Gujarati and in English translation. The primary texts considered for the same consists of some of the famous fiction by well-know Gujarati authors - Saat Pagla Akashma by Kundanika Kapadia, Vaad by Ila Arab Mehta, Andhari Galima Safed Tapka by Himanshi Shelat and two anthologies of Gujarati short-stories translated in English – Speech and Silence by Rita Kothari and New Horizons of Women’s Writing by Amina Amin and Manju Verma. For this comparative study I have applied Andre Lefevere’s (1945-1996) conceptual framework of ‘Translation as a Rewriting of the Original’ and his concepts of four constraints namely – Ideology, Poetics, Patronage and Universe of Discourse. Apart from this, another important aim of my research was to examine the representation of female gender and scrutinize any instance of manipulation to create a different and more acceptable image of the women of Gujarat. Often it has been observed that the translator’s personal prejudices and cultural background affect the meaning of the original text as well as the character portrayal to suit the convenience of the target language-culture readers. The book also involved a study of the literature of Gujarat with particular focus on the arrival and contributions of women writers to the Gujarati literary spectrum; a comparative analysis of the representation of women in fiction by male and female writers of the state, Along with mainstream literature, folk and tribal literatures too have been considered, especially the gender images they portrait. I have scrutinised select excerpts from both the original fiction and their translations of the primary texts to examine any instances of misrepresentation or ambiguity at socio-cultural-linguistic front as well as in the representation of female self with a theoretical background of general translation theory and Lefevere’s theory in particular with fascinating findings at the end of the research endeavour. In recent years translation studies has emerged as a major academic discipline along with the rise of translation industry with the availability of multiple foreign language texts available in English as well as Indian languages and vice versa. This booming industry also promised ample opportunities to translators assuring not only prestige but also financial security. However, the point under scrutiny is that does the commercialization of the translation industry promote quality translations? In such circumstances, it is essential to conduct a survey to analyse the quality of translations produced and to provide a better guideline to the aspiring translators to make them better equipped with translation technique and theory to help them produce good quality translations while overcoming various hurdles at linguistic, cultural and stylistic levels which are capable to represent the region, culture, society, writer and literature of the original language. This research focuses on this relatively new and less paved area and it is a humble initiative in this direction with an aim to spread awareness towards this much neglected aspect of translation activity.

Ebrahim Alkazi took English theatre from its early beginnings in Bombay to national and even international acclaim as he directed and acted in more than a hundred plays, ranging from Oedipus Rex, Murder in the Cathedral and Macbeth in the 1950s, to Ashadh Ka Ek Din, Andha Yug and Tughlaq in the '60s and '70s. As director of the fabled National School of Drama from 1962 to 1977, he launched some of the finest actors of our times, including Om Shivpuri, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Rohini Hattangadi, Manohar Singh and Uttara Baokar. Chief costume designer and seamstress for all his productions was Roshen Alkazi. In 1977, when Ebrahim and Roshen decided to open Art Heritage in Delhi, it gave a new dimension to the world of art, as the leading artists of the day, including M.F. Husain, Krishen Khanna, F.N.
