In vivid detail it describes the rise of Glasgow through tobacco, shipping, manufacturing and trade from a minor cathedral town to the cosmopolitan center of the present day. Ian Maxwells book focuses on the lives of the local people both rich and poor and on their experience as Glasgow developed around them. It looks at their living conditions, at health and the ravages of disease, at the influence of religion and migration and education. It is the story of the Irish and Highland migrants, Quakers, Jews, Irish, Italians, and more recently people from the Caribbean, South-Asia and China who have made Glasgow their home. A wealth of information on the city and its people is available, and Glasgow Ancestors is an essential guide for anyone researching its history or the life of an individual ancestor. institutions, clubs, societies and schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises the ancestries, as far as I can trace them, of up to seven generations of our McASLAN and RENWICK parents’ families. As a student, our father researched his own surname, McASLAN, back to the late seventeenth century. Much later, he obtained approval of his researches from the Lord Lyon King of Arms. But he did not research his mother’s family. Nor did he research his wife's / our mother's ancestors. This book thus provides a full ancestry of ourselves.

Book Synopsis The Hidden History of Glasgow's Women by : Elspeth King
Download or read book The Hidden History of Glasgow's Women written by Elspeth King and published by Mainstream Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at aspects of Glasgow history which have hitherto been ignored or overlooked by most historians - the history of women in the city. Existing histories are the histories of the men who made Glasgow great: the inventors, industrialists, shipbuilders, philosophers and men of medicine. Although every schoolchild knows the legends of St Mungo, no one knows the legend of his mother St Thenew. The strong machismo culture of the west of Scotland has all but obliterated the contribution of women. St Thenew is actually Scotland's first recorded rape victim, battered woman and unmarried mother. From the time of her death in the seventh century until the present day, there is a discernable trail of oppression and violence against women. At the same time there is a history of strong and sustained resistance to persecution, achievement in the face of adversity and moral triumph in the teeth of injustice. This work deals with women, religon and the Reformation, social and political status, the fight for equal rights and the history of the Suffragettes. Because of the nature of the sources, more space is given to women who stood up and stood out - the 16th century "orray woemen" whom the town council could not control, the revolutionary Owenites and those brave women who threw bombs, burned down big houses, and went on hunger strike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish history has been strangely neglected. This is the first scholarly biography of Robert Baillie, the minister, historian and participant in the revolutionary Covenanter movement. Baillie's life (1602 - 1662) spans the most important period in the history of Scotland as an independent state. The revolution began in 1636 when Charles I, Stuart King of England and Scotland, attempted to unite the reformed churches of his two kingdoms by promulgating a universal litany known as the Service Book. Baillie, though himself a conservative Royalist, joined the Scottish lords and ministers in signing the National Covenant, the document that led ultimately to the downfall of Charles and two wars with England. Despite his prominence in what became the Second Reformation of the Scottish church, Baillie managed to survive many purges and changes of regime, keeping detailed journals on the events of which he was part.
